Read on your PC, Mac, smartphone, tablet or Kindle device. This holiday season, if you buy the print edition as a gift, you can keep the Kindle edition for yourself! In J.J. Watt: The Inspiring Story of One of Football's Greatest Defensive Ends, you will learn the inspirational story of one of football's premier defensive ends, JJ Watt. Since joining the NFL, JJ Watt has quickly emerged as one of the league's best defensive players, causing opposing teams to double and sometimes even triple team him to try to contain him. His impact on the defensive end of the field is truly invaluable JJ's journey to playing professional football is an inspirational one of perseverance and hard work. In this book, you'll explore his journey to the NFL, as well as the highs and lows of his career thus far. Here is a preview of what is inside this book: Early Life and Childhood High School Years of JJ Watt JJ Watt's College Years at Central Michigan, Wisconsin Watt's NFL Career Watt's Personal Life JJ Watt's Impact on Football and Beyond Watt's Legacy in the NFL An excerpt from the book: After making the decision to jump to the NFL, the first step of being able to play on Sundays was going through the Rookie Combine that was held in February 2011 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. This was considered the best time to make a major impact on how you were judged by the NFL scouts from all 32 teams in the league. Watt was able to do that as he came in as his six-foot-five, 290-pound physique that was easily noticed. He wasn't the fastest in the 40-yard dash, but it wasn't too far from the leaders at about 4.81 seconds -which is still a good mark for someone of his size. He was also able to do a 10-yard split in about 1.64 seconds, the 20-yard split in 2.71 seconds and completed the three-cone agility drill in just under seven seconds. He was also a standout for his strength with a total of 34 repetitions of bench pressing the 225-pound weight given to all Combine participants. In addition to his opportunities to show his speed and strength, he was also able to complete the vertical jump at about 37 inches and then performed a 10-foot broad jump. Now in addition to his physical skills, Watt also scored a 31 on the Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Test, which is famously used by NFL teams to see how well the new batch of rookies can show their aptitude for solving problems that could translate to being able to think quickly on the field when faced with a variety of adversities to find success. The average player in the NFL would score about 20 on this Wonderlic test, while a perfect score would be 50. Watt's 31 was close to players like Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers' 35 and a lot better than other notable players who have had scores as low as 4 (i.e. Morris Claiborne from the 2012 NFL Draft). Yet with all of those statistics from the NFL Combine, Watt was marked with a grade of 8.37 out of 10, which fell within the range that predicts whether or not a player will be capable of becoming an All-Pro player in the league. The experts from the NFL were considering Watt as a perfect fit for a team that uses a 4-3 defensive scheme - four linemen and three linebackers. However, experts speculated that there might be some benefits to using him as an end in a 3-4 - three linemen and four linebackers. He did receive some negative marks for not being considered a fast start off the line and attacking blocks, but made up for it with his ability pursue the quarterback with straight-line speed. Book excerpt: In 2011, he became starting linebacker for the New York Giants and triumphed in the Super Bowl—after being told his cancer diagnosis meant he would never play football again.... As a child, Herzlich found true meaning in football, eventually turning his passion into a first-team All-American spot at Boston College. But the budding star was sidelined by persistent, debilitating pain in his left leg. The shocking diagnosis: He had Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare bone cancer. Doctors put his odds of survival as low as ten percent—and no one thought he would be able to run, much less play football, again. Then Herzlich learned of a radical treatment that would give him the best chance to regain his strength and maybe even play football again, but it could cost him his life. Relying on family, friends, faith, and deep wells of determination to help him through treatment, his plan worked. Not only could he run, but he was physically stronger than ever, and mentally ready to battle his way into the NFL. When he was passed over by all thirty-two teams in the draft, he dug deeper and continued his training, winning a spot in the Giants’ training camp and, eventually, on the team. Mark Herzlich fought a battle against cancer, against statistics, and some days against himself. Told with candor and raw emotion, What It Takes is a story for anyone who has ever fought to beat the odds, for anyone who has ever been told that what they are about to attempt is next to impossible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly four years after an errant tackle left him paralyzed below the waist, the inspiring comeback story of how former Pittsburgh Steeler Ryan Shazier recovered to walk again. As an All-American at Ohio State and All-Pro linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Ryan Shazier was living his best life while excelling at the game he loves, a game that has given him so much. But then Ryan was forced to redefine success. Suddenly, it was no longer measured by tackles or sacks, but by purpose and faith. WALKING MIRACLE is the story of this new definition of success, following the arc from December 4, 2017, when Shazier was injured playing the Cincinnati Bengals, to his retirement. For three years, Shazier doggedly pursued a return to professional football. He took small wins as “first downs” on the drive to return to the field: moving his toes, walking, dancing at his wedding, and ultimately running and returning to the team. What Shazier didn’t realize is that along the way, he was preparing himself for another purpose—that of father and husband, philanthropist, and football analyst. The journey was preparing him not for a renewed life as a middle linebacker, but a renewed life after the game. Here we see Shazier overcome childhood alopecia, which caused a great deal of emotional pain, and scoliosis, which nearly robbed him of his dreams of playing college and professional football. We gain insights into legendary coaches Urban Meyer and Mike Tomlin. And we see him star on the field. Shazier was one of the best defensive players in Steeler history—a history full of great defensive stars. WALKING MIRACLE—the message on a bracelet given to him by his godmother—is the story of Ryan’s comeback, but it’s also a book of life’s lessons, challenges, and a love letter to the power of positive thinking.

Book excerpt: One the greatest NFL broadcasters distills the wisdom of two of the greatest coaches As both a tight end and a place kicker for the 1958 Giants (back when special teams were part of the defense), Pat Summerall was the only person to be coached by both Vince Lombardi and Tom Landry, the team's offensive and defensive coaches, respectively. In telling the story of that legendary season, which ended with the Giants losing to the Colts in the NFL championship game, Summerall explores the wisdom that was passed along to him that made him a better player, and later a better broadcaster and better a man. The wide range of lessons covers personal behavior (react like a football player; training doesn't end in training camp; don't dwell on your success), work relationships (the boss keeps time, they can get somebody who wants to play) and winning (believe in your heart that you'll win, try to win every game, but focus on one game at a time) The book also lays out the Lombardi Code (Speak Confidently, and Prepare) and the Landry Code (Faith, Family and Football) Summerall tells vivid and inspirational stories about the game on and off the field that bring the lessons to life
