Book excerpt: This book is about life and how to attain or approximate our most important aspirations. It is designed to benefit everyone involved in any kind of venture, or relationship. The book is especially important to people who, on a daily basis, have to achieve important (personal or business) objectives by persuading others to see things their way, or at least to meet them half way for a constructive and beneficial outcome. This book is about life in all of its aspects. It attempts to reach and be helpful to each reader in most aspects of life, which the reader may need to improve, or re-evaluate. Part of the objective of this book is to make a person acting in an informed manner, become more comfortable with the choices that may from time to time be made. Understanding why those choices were made, and owning the benefits and being prepared to stoically deal with the attendant consequences that may flow from those choices. To be sure, this book is partly a concession to the sometimes unfathomable world in which we live. It is therefore no more than my own imperfect effort of attempting to make some sense out of how and why things are the way they are. How and why things have tended to work best for most people who have been deemed successful in various aspects of human endeavor, whether as a great parent, effective leader, a good advocate, an inspired creator of abundant wealth, an admired citizen, a trusted partner, or a great friend. Briefly, therefore, this book is divided into three broad chapters. Each chapter is further sub-divided into appropriate sections, for an easy and hopefully logical flow. Chapter one attempts to lay out the general foundation for the kinds of issues and challenges to be addressed. Chapter two addresses these issues in the context of various life circumstances and relationships we each find, or may from time to time, find ourselves. Chapter three, the last chapter, hopefully succeeds in tying it all together. The goal of the book is achieved. By the time one completes reading the book, each reader will be able to identify a personal road map for success. And this road map is applicable to whatever field of endeavor, or aspect of life, that each person may desire greater measure of success. As we each pursue our respective aspirations which could range from a desire to be loved and embraced; a quest to be perceived as worthy; an important recognition, respect, reward, or some other opportunity, it is very important to be very cognizant of the kinds of actions, attitude, or mind set, that are more likely than not, to aid us in attaining the ultimate goal we crave. I call the constructive application of these various life tenets, THE WINNING FORMULA.

Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times best-selling author of The Power of Intention “What I’m offering in this book is the awareness that we can return to a full-time position of inspiration, which is the true meaning of our life.”— Dr. Wayne W. Dyer In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer explains how we’ve chosen to enter this world of particles and form. From our place of origin, in ways that we don’t readily comprehend now, we knew what we were coming here to accomplish, and we participated in setting this life process in motion. So why not think along these same lines? Why put the responsibility or blame on any one or any thing that’s not a part of us? On Earth we have the capacity of volition—we can choose—so let’s assume that we had the same capacity when we resided in the spiritual realm. We chose our physical body, and we chose the parents we needed for the trip. It doesn’t seem too great a stretch to move into the idea that we chose this life in concert with our Source. Inspiration can be cultivated and be a driving force throughout life, rather than showing up every now and then and just as mysteriously disappearing, seemingly independent of our desires. Inspiration is for everyone! It isn’t reserved for high-profile creative geniuses in the arts and sciences—it’s inherent in our Divine birthright. The problem is that as children we’re gradually taught to believe exclusively in the world of phenomena where ego is dominant and inspiration diminished. As you read each chapter in this book, you’ll find specific suggestions for living “in-Spirit.” From a very personal viewpoint, Wayne offers a blueprint through the world of inspiration—your ultimate calling.

Book excerpt: For managers and executives who are watching their employees struggle, there is a simple solution that can turn a workplace around in just 12 weeks -- and grow the bottom line. This book shows businesspeople how to inspire -- not just motivate -- others by tapping into their dreams and tying them to corporate goals. Along the way, those inspiring organisations make more money, have bet-ter employee retention, and earn greater customer loyalty than their competitors do. Being authentic, seeing others abilities, connecting with other people's dreams, and earning trust through credibility are some of the tenets of author Terry Barber's programme. To underscore the seven principles of inspiration he outlines, he offers real-life applications throughout the book based on his almost thirty years of experience. And to help leaders nail the art and science of identifying and applying their unique abilities to inspire others, he provides thought-provoking questions and concrete exercises that can be implemented the very day they open the book. For leaders who question whether they and their teams are valuing the right things, focusing on the right priorities, and building a supportive environment, this book offers confidence, personal fulfilment, and a more productive, happier workforce.

Book excerpt: Inspiration: Towards a Christian Interpretation of Biblical Inspiration anchors its study of inspiration firmly in the Scriptures and examines the inspired nature of the Bible and its inspiring impact. Gerald O'Collins begins by examining classical view of inspiration expounded by Karl Barth and Raymond Collins. He takes up the inspired origin of the Old Testament, where earlier books helped to inspire later books, before moving to the New Testament, which throughout shows the inspiring impact of the inherited Scriptures--both in direct citations and in many echoes. The work then investigates the Bible's inspiring influence on Christian worship, preaching, teaching, the visual arts, literature, and life. After a chapter that clarifies the interrelationship between divine revelation, tradition, and inspiration, two chapters expound ten characteristics of biblical inspiration, with special emphasis on the inspiring quality of the Bible. O'Collins explains a major consequence of inspiration, biblical truth, and the grounds on which the Church 'canonized' the Scriptures. After spelling out three approaches to biblical interpretation (the authorial intention, the role of readers, and the primacy of the text itself), the book ends by setting out ten principles for engaging theologically with the Scriptures. An epilogue highlights two achievements of the book. By carefully distinguishing inspiration from divine revelation and biblical truth, it can deliver readers from false problems. This work also underlines the inspiring effects of the Scriptures as part of the Holy Spirit's work of inspiration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible is by far the leading source of inspiration for Western literature, and in particular, the life of Jesus has drawn the attention of artists and writers throughout the ages. Now, in a volume of astonishing range and originality, Robert Atwan, George Dardess, and Peggy Rosenthal present 280 remarkable poems from world literature focusing on Jesus's life and teaching. Readers accustomed to the predictable inclusions of many anthologies will be surprised and delighted by the diversity of poets represented here, from Aquinas, Dante, de Guevara, Donne, and Sor Juana, to D.H. Lawrence, Gabriela Mistral, Wole Soyinka, Margaret Atwood, Gwendolyn Brooks, Czeslaw Milosz, and Leopold Senghor. Perhaps no other thematically organized anthology could have brought together writers as different as Jorge Luis Borges, Thomas Merton, Alice Walker, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Jack Kerouac. Indeed, simply to turn the page in Divine Inspiration is an adventure in itself. And in terms of form, style, modulations of tone and perspective, the variety here is as unparalleled as it is unpredictable. The editors of Divine Inspiration have done a masterful job of unifying this vast assortment of poems. Organized chronologically around the life of Jesus, the book is divided into nine sections--from Birth and Infancy, through Healings and Miracles, to the Resurrection-- and presents passages from the Gospels followed by the poems they inspired. This structure gives readers the dual pleasures of a strong narrative pull punctuated by moments of lyric intensity. Our familiarity with the life of Jesus is thus enlivened, deepened, and in some cases wholly transformed by the imaginative power of the poems. In the largest section of the book, on the Passion of Jesus, we find an array of poems by Anna Akhmatova, Antonio Machado, Thomas Hardy, Miguel de Unamuno, Charles Baudelaire, R.S. Thomas, Andrew Marvell, Frederico Garcia Lorca, and Denise Levertov, among others. To see the Passion of Jesus refracted through the lenses of such poets is to see it anew, or more vividly than before. And to encounter Chinese, Korean, Nigerian, Arab, Latin American, Scandinavian, Hungarian, and Greek poets alongside English, French, and German is a testimony both to the editors' devoted scholarship and to the power of Jesus's life to inspire great poetry across a spectrum of cultures and eras. An invaluable sourcebook for students, scholars, and general readers alike, Divine Inspiration should prove equally satisfying to readers with a strong interest in religion and to all lovers of poetry.

In a time where the humanities are viewed as in decline or in threat of collapse altogether, this book enacts and extends the best of the humanities toward prevailing challenges within the complex realities of our current cultural moment. The book presents how the humanities can contribute to humanizing business and management. It explores and discusses various ways to integrate the views and approaches of the humanities in business and management research, practice, and education responding to the unprecedented challenges of the Anthropocene. The relations between humanities and social sciences is also discussed, as models and theories of business and management are based on insights of social sciences. The book is an outcome of the “Humanities for Business” project of Princeton University Faith and Work Initiative, the European SPES Institute, Leuven, and the Business Ethics Center of Corvinus University of Budapest. It is of great value to researchers, students, policy makers and research institutions interested in using humanities for renewing and humanizing business and management.
