Book excerpt: Inspector Strangelove is an adaptation by Rolf McEwen of The Inspector General by Nikolai Gogol. The plot revolves around a case of mistaken identity in which an impoverished young civil servant from Saint Petersburg, Klestakov, is thought by the leaders of a small village to be an important government inspector. It's a terrible mistake that costs them dearly. The government officials fear the consequences of a visit by an inspector because he might uncover the corruption of which they are guilty. Klestakov, when he realizes that they have mistaken him for an inspector, makes the most of the situation. He creates exaggerated tales of his life as a high-ranking government official. He solicits bribes from village officials. In a bold and reckless gesture, he proposes to the governor's daughter. He flees the village before his true identity can be discovered. The townspeople realize their mistake soon after he is gone. Then a shocking twist of fate falls upon the officials of this humble village in Russia.

Book excerpt: Peter Sellers was a genius, whose unique mastery created enduring comic characters. But behind the man that could make the world laugh was a tragic sadness. Employing his creations as masks to hide behind, Sellers was convinced his own life was meaningless and empty. Acclaimed (On Sunset Boulevard - the story of Billy WIlder) biographer Ed Sikov has spoken to many who knew and worked with Sellers, including Sophia Loren, Goldie Hawn, and Roman Polanski. Sikov reveals how Sellers was a casualty of his own insecurities and used his public persona to mask his tormented private life, littered with four marriages (and three divorces), countless affairs, and drug and alcohol abuse. This is the authoritative and touching story of a majestic comedian, showing the very private face of a man whose world was lived through the public arena. 'An authoritative biography and a compulsive page turner.' Michael Palin, New York Times 'Sikov's book is often melancholy, but always informative, and entertaining... They don't really make 'em like that any more - you can't get the wood you know' Simon Louvish, Guardian
Download or read book The Joseph Story written by Rolf McEwen and published by Rolf McEwen. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph lived a life of high drama. In his youth, he had peculiar dreams. When he told his brothers that he dreamed they would all bow down to him, they took offense. In their anger they captured him and sold him as a slave. He served in the house of Potiphar in Egypt. Under Joseph's management, Potiphar grew prosperous. Potiphar's wife found Joseph handsome and desirable. She befriended him, but he kept his distance. She accused him of raping her, and he was sent to prison where for years he maintained his good character. He interpreted dreams for Pharaoh's baker and his wine taster, both who were in prison. When Pharaoh sought someone to interpret his own dream, Joseph was sent for. His interpretation of Pharaoh's dream resulted in Joseph being appointed second in power in Egypt. Joseph's brothers eventually were brought before him. He dealt shrewdly with them, withholding his true identity and forcing them to bring their entire family to Egypt from the land of Canaan. Joseph's wisdom, courage, compassion, and goodness are truly inspiring. He kept his integrity through all his trials. The story of Joseph provides encouragement to all who learn it.

Download or read book Mad Love written by Rolf McEwen and published by Rolf McEwen. This book was released on 2009-10 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lovely young Lydia Languish resists all attempts by her guardians to select a suitable husband for her. Although she comes from a wealthy family, she considers it more romantic to choose a man from among the lower class. She pursues a relationship of passion and romance rather than seeking a fellow from her own social class who would inherit wealth and position. Her arrogant aunt, Mrs. Malaprop (famous for her use of misapplied terms known as "malapropisms"), strives by various means to force Lydia into submission. She is assisted by an old friend, Anthony Absolute, whose handsome young son, Captain Jack Absolute, serves in the military. Jack has taken a fancy to Lydia, and has adopted an alias, Lieutenant Bonny, because he wishes to pursue her. He knows she will not see him if she knows him to be a member of the upper class, so he pretends to be a lowly lieutenant. Bonny and Lydia carry on a secret romance, but a quarrel created intentionally by Lydia keeps them apart. Lydia's cousin Julia sympathizes with Lydia for the many troubles she must endure. Julia is engaged to be married to Fred, who is obsessed with her and is overcome with insecurity and jealousy. Mrs. Malaprop has suitors of her own which she attempts to conceal from Lydia. A clever servant, Lucy, carries letters between the lovers while she manipulates circumstances for financial benefit. She mixes things up mischievously and delightfully. Several men nearly come to violence in pursuit of their women. Romance and wit abound in this humorous play adapted in a modern version by Rolf McEwen from The Rivals by Richard Brinsley Sheridan. This version is set in England in 1910.

Book Synopsis Remaking the Frankenstein Myth on Film by : Caroline Joan S. Picart
Download or read book Remaking the Frankenstein Myth on Film written by Caroline Joan S. Picart and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on films outside the horror genre, this book offers a unique account of the Frankenstein myth's popularity and endurance. Although the Frankenstein narrative has been a staple in horror films, it has also crossed over into other genres, particularly comedy and science fiction, resulting in such films as Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, Young Frankenstein, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Bladerunner, and the Alien and Terminator film series. In addition to addressing horror's relationship to comedy and science fiction, the book also explores the versatility and power of the Frankenstein narrative as a contemporary myth through which our deepest attitudes concerning gender (masculine versus feminine), race (Same versus Other), and technology (natural versus artificial) are both revealed and concealed. The book not only examines the films themselves, but also explores early drafts of film scripts, scenes that were cut from the final releases, publicity materials, and reviews, in order to consider more fully how and why the Frankenstein myth continues to resonate in the popular imagination.

Book Synopsis New Constellations by : Pamela Robertson Wojcik
Download or read book New Constellations written by Pamela Robertson Wojcik and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American culture changed radically over the course of the 1960s, and the culture of Hollywood was no exception. The film industry began the decade confidently churning out epic spectacles and lavish musicals, but became flummoxed as new aesthetics and modes of production emerged, and low-budget youth pictures like Easy Rider became commercial hits. New Constellations: Movie Stars of the 1960s tells the story of the final glory days of the studio system and changing conceptions of stardom, considering such Hollywood icons as Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman alongside such hallmarks of youth culture as Mia Farrow and Dustin Hoffman. Others, like Sidney Poitier and Peter Sellers, took advantage of the developing independent and international film markets to craft truly groundbreaking screen personae. And some were simply “famous for being famous,” with celebrities like Zsa Zsa Gabor and Edie Sedgwick paving the way for today’s reality stars.
Book Synopsis Another Fine Mess by : Saul Austerlitz
Download or read book Another Fine Mess written by Saul Austerlitz and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charlie Chaplin. Buster Keaton. The Marx Brothers. Billy Wilder. Woody Allen. The Coen brothers. Where would the American film be without them? Yet the cinematic genre these artists represent--comedy--has perennially received short shrift from critics, film buffs, and the Academy Awards. Saul Austerlitz’s Another Fine Mess is an attempt to right that wrong. Running the gamut of film history from City Lights to Knocked Up, Another Fine Mess retells the story of American film from the perspective of its unwanted stepbrother--the comedy. In 30 long chapters and 100 shorter entries, each devoted primarily to a single performer or director, Another Fine Mess retraces the steps of the American comedy film, filling in the gaps and following the connections that link Mae West to Doris Day, or W. C. Fields to Will Ferrell. The first book of its kind in more than a generation, Another Fine Mess is an eye-opening, entertaining, and enlightening tour of the American comedy, encompassing the masterpieces, the box-office smashes, and all the little-known gems in between.
Book Synopsis Stanley Kubrick by : Randy Rasmussen
Download or read book Stanley Kubrick written by Randy Rasmussen and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-11-16 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stanley Kubrick had a great talent for creating memorable images--such as his famous jump cut from a bone tossed into the prehistoric sky to a spaceship orbiting the earth in 2001. Like the composer of a great symphony, Kubrick also had the ability to draw his memorable moments into a lyrical whole. Balancing harmony with discord, he kept viewers on edge by constantly shifting relationships among the dramatic elements in his movies. The results often confounded expectations and provoked controversy, right up through Eyes Wide Shut, the last film of his life. This book is an intensive, scene-by-scene analysis of Kubrick's most mature work--seven meticulously wrought films, from Dr. Strangelove to Eyes Wide Shut. In these films, Kubrick dramatized the complexity and mutability of the human struggle, in settings so diverse that some critics have failed to see the common threads. Rasmussen traces those threads and reveals the always shifting, always memorable, always passionately rendered pattern.
