Book Synopsis Evolution of Translational Omics by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Evolution of Translational Omics written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-09-13 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technologies collectively called omics enable simultaneous measurement of an enormous number of biomolecules; for example, genomics investigates thousands of DNA sequences, and proteomics examines large numbers of proteins. Scientists are using these technologies to develop innovative tests to detect disease and to predict a patient's likelihood of responding to specific drugs. Following a recent case involving premature use of omics-based tests in cancer clinical trials at Duke University, the NCI requested that the IOM establish a committee to recommend ways to strengthen omics-based test development and evaluation. This report identifies best practices to enhance development, evaluation, and translation of omics-based tests while simultaneously reinforcing steps to ensure that these tests are appropriately assessed for scientific validity before they are used to guide patient treatment in clinical trials.

This book was released on 2024-02-23 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IN LOVING MEMORY of Dr. Zarina Abdul Latiff. Thalassemia is a genetically heterogenous group of hemoglobinopathy disorders, characterised by imbalanced production of the α-globin or β-globin subunits of hemoglobin. Although the causative genotype is a key determinant of disease severity, the clinical spectrum and phenotype are affected by secondary and tertiary genetic modifiers. The public health and clinical burden of the disease is apparent with 1.5% of the global population being carriers and an estimated 400,000 affected births annually, with the majority in lower-middle-income countries. Although diagnostics and clinical management have evolved over the last decade, there is still much to be addressed in terms prevention, utility of molecular diagnostics, treatment outcome and quality of life.

Book Synopsis Molecular diagnostic methods for bacteria and fungi detection by : Laura Cerqueira
Download or read book Molecular diagnostic methods for bacteria and fungi detection written by Laura Cerqueira and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-06-12 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microorganisms, like bacteria and fungi, are ubiquitous worldwide and can have different roles in human’s lives. Some will bring beneficial effects which are exploited and used in industrial and agricultural sectors. Contrariwise, some are responsible for several life-threatening diseases. Microbial analysis, surveillance and research is therefore crucial. Until recently, the classical culturing methods were widely used to study bacteria and fungi. However these methods, although considered the gold standard, are becoming now obsolete since they tend to be time-consuming, have low sensitivity and are unable to detect some cellular morphological states, as the viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state, leading to false negative results. Moving away from the classical methods, microbial detection is now evolving to new effective and rapid diagnostics.
