Book excerpt: Freighted with meaning, “el barrio” is both place and metaphor for Latino populations in the United States. Though it has symbolized both marginalization and robust and empowered communities, the construct of el barrio has often reproduced static understandings of Latino life; they fail to account for recent demographic shifts in urban centers such as New York, Chicago, Miami, and Los Angeles, and in areas outside of these historic communities. Beyond El Barrio features new scholarship that critically interrogates how Latinos are portrayed in media, public policy and popular culture, as well as the material conditions in which different Latina/o groups build meaningful communities both within and across national affiliations. Drawing from history, media studies, cultural studies, and anthropology, the contributors illustrate how despite the hypervisibility of Latinos and Latin American immigrants in recent political debates and popular culture, the daily lives of America’s new “majority minority” remain largely invisible and mischaracterized. Taken together, these essays provide analyses that not only defy stubborn stereotypes, but also present novel narratives of Latina/o communities that do not fit within recognizable categories. In this way, this book helps us to move “beyond el barrio”: beyond stereotype and stigmatizing tropes, as well as nostalgic and uncritical portraits of complex and heterogeneous range of Latina/o lives.

Book excerpt: "Inside El Barrio" charts the legacy of Fidel Castro through the unique lens of Cuban household life during the El Perodo Especial (the Special Period). Taylor traverses the neighborhoods and residential developments of Havana between 1989 and 2006, the final and most complex period in the "Age of Castros Cuba" to uncover the hidden vibrancy of Cubas streets and citizens. In doing so, he acquires a deeper understanding of Cuban society by exploring what it means to live in a people-centered nation and the importance of neighborhoods in shaping everyday life and culture.

Book excerpt: Welcome to José's neighborhood. In his barrio, people speak an easy mix of Spanish and English and sometimes even Chinese. The masked revelry of Halloween leads into the festive remembrances of the Day of the Dead. And murals on the walls and buildings sing out the stories of the people who live here. As familiar as any neighborhood yet as strange as a foreign country, Jose's barrio isn't in Mexico or Argentina--it's in San Francisco. Award-winning author and photographer George Ancona follows José through a season in the barrio, and in the process gives readers a glimpse of a community as rich and varied as America itself.

A new world was arising and we had a front-row seat to political changes as well as racial and gender issues. As we traversed these issues of family, culture, and racism, we were bolstered by such things as music and art as well as religion and trying desperately to hold on to our traditional values. We clung to one another and our families as we made our way in an ever-changing landscape; and we progressed, we innovated, we adapted, and succeeded in becoming part of the mosaic that became New York City.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychoanalysis in the Barrios: Race, Class, and the Unconscious demonstrates that psychoanalytic principles can be applied successfully in disenfranchised Latino populations, refuting the misguided idea that psychoanalysis is an expensive luxury only for the wealthy. As opposed to most Latin American countries, where psychoanalysis is seen as a practice tied to the promotion of social justice, in the United States psychoanalysis has been viewed as reserved for the well-to-do, assuming that poor people lack the "sophistication" that psychoanalysis requires, thus heeding invisible but no less rigid class boundaries. Challenging such discrimination, the authors testify to the efficacy of psychoanalysis in the barrios, upending the unfounded widespread belief that poor people are so consumed with the pressures of everyday survival that they only benefit from symptom-focused interventions. Sharing vivid vignettes of psychoanalytic treatments, this collection sheds light on the psychological complexities of life in the barrio that is often marked by poverty, migration, marginalization, and barriers of language, class, and race. This interdisciplinary collection features essays by distinguished international scholars and clinicians. It represents a unique crossover that will appeal to readers in clinical practice, social work, counselling, anthropology, psychology, cultural and Latino studies, queer studies, urban studies, and sociology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1998, a Mexican American woman named Estela Ruiz began seeing visions of the Virgin Mary in south Phoenix. The apparitions and messages spurred the creation of Mary’s Ministries, a Catholic evangelizing group, and its sister organization, ESPIRITU, which focuses on community-based initiatives and social justice for Latinos/as. Based on ten years of participant observation and in-depth interviews, The Virgin of El Barrio traces the spiritual transformation of Ruiz, the development of the community that has sprung up around her, and the international expansion of their message. Their organizations blend popular and official Catholicism as well as evangelical Protestant styles of praise and worship, shedding light on Catholic responses to the tensions between popular and official piety and the needs of Mexican Americans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first comprehensive study of Chicanas encountering the U.S. criminal justice system is set within the context of the international war on drugs as witnessed at street level in Chicana/o barrios. Chicana Lives and Criminal Justice uses oral history to chronicle the lives of twenty-four Chicana pintas (prisoners/former prisoners) repeatedly arrested and incarcerated for non-violent, low-level economic and drug-related crimes. It also provides the first documentation of the thirty-four-year history of Sybil Brand Institute, Los Angeles' former women's jail. In a time and place where drug war policies target people of color and their communities, drug-addicted Chicanas are caught up in an endless cycle of police abuse, arrest, and incarceration. They feel the impact of mandatory sentencing laws, failing social services and endemic poverty, violence, racism, and gender discrimination. The women in this book frankly discuss not only their jail experiences, but also their family histories, involvement with gangs, addiction to drugs, encounters with the juvenile and adult criminal justice systems, and their successful and unsuccessful attempts to recover from addiction and reconstitute fractured families. The Chicanas' stories underscore the amazing resilience and determination that have allowed many of the women to break the cycle of abuse. Díaz-Cotto also makes policy recommendations for those who come in contact with Chicanas/Latinas caught in the criminal justice system.

Book excerpt: When rock and roll was transforming American culture in the 1950s and '60s, East Harlem pulsed with the sounds of mambo and merengue. Instead of Elvis and the Beatles, Marta Moreno Vega grew up worshiping Celia Cruz, Mario Bauza, and Arsenio Rodriguez. Their music could be heard on every radio in El Barrio and from the main stage at the legendary Palladium, where every weekend working-class kids dressed in their sharpest suits and highest heels and became mambo kings and queens. Spanish Harlem was a vibrant and dynamic world, but it was also a place of constant change, where the traditions of Puerto Rican parents clashed with their children's American ideals. A precocious little girl with wildly curly hair, Marta was the baby of the family and the favorite of her elderly abuela, who lived in the apartment down the hall. Abuela Luisa was the spiritual center of the family, an espiritista who smoked cigars and honored the Afro-Caribbean deities who had always protected their family. But it was Marta's brother, Chachito, who taught her the latest dance steps and called her from the pay phone at the Palladium at night so she could listen, huddled beneath the bedcovers, to the seductive rhythms of Tito Puente and his orchestra. In this luminous and lively memoir, Marta Moreno Vega calls forth the spirit of Puerto Rican New York and the music, mysticism, and traditions of a remarkable and quintessentially American childhood.

Book excerpt: This book tells of story of a groundbreaking event in Chicano history. Here, for the first time, is the complete history of "Con Safos: Reflections of Life in the Barrio" the first ever Chicano literary magazine. Created by a legendary group of furiously independent barrio intellectuals and artists, connected to no established group and working on their own dime,10 magazine issues were produced in the late 1960s and 1970s in East Los Angeles. Many writers and artists who would later become well-known were first published in "Con Safos." Bilingual, using Calo' and the slang of the barrios, "Con Safos" helped to bring to attention an important inner vision of the barrio, Mexican American family life, "El Movimiento" --the Chicano civil rights protest movement-- and "El Moratorium" the Chicano movement against the Vietnam War. It used humor as its sword to tilt at establishment windmills. It made fun of everything--even itself as it took on the most serious questions of the day including racism and discrimination. There were those that hated it and those that loved it, but everybody read it. As it became the "Voice of the Barrio" it helped create a Chicano aesthetic enhancing the much-needed development of Chicano identity. In the last chapter, "Con Safos" "vatos" tell what they are doing now. Their contemporary lives reflect and illuminate the persistence of creativity through the life span in these Chicano men.

Book excerpt: Telling the true story of five educators who found themselves wrongly accused by the FBI, the Texas Education Agency and local government, Bombshell in the Barrio shares their navigation through a world of plots, schemes, and lies, all concocted by those in power who are supposed to protect and represent the interests of the people. The educators, who all worked in low socioeconomic schools, found themselves boxed in by the media and the government, and their voices were squelched. After years of suffering lost jobs, dashed reputations and drained bank accounts, these individuals and their attorneys slowly began to dismantle the case against them. They revealed the acts of a corrupt AUSA prosecutor, uncovered a local land grab scheme, discovered connections among the oligarchical elite of El Paso and exposed the corruption and ineptitude of the local media-all of whom were guilty of the charges they themselves faced: denying students of a proper education. The book provides plenty of documentation for those who doubt. After reading this, you will question every charter school and gentrification plan in your area. In a country that is so divided by left and right, this book makes us contemplate a new question: is it them (the oligarchs) against us (the people)? These five educators should not have won against the goliath of the government, but they did.

She interweaves the economy of immigrant neighborhoods with the personal experiences of Latinos aging in Harlem. Freidenberg further links policy issues -- such as persistent poverty in urban enclaves and the provision of health and social services to an aging population -- to social issues critical to the daily lives of this population.
