Book Synopsis Inseparable Elements by : Patsy Millett
Download or read book Inseparable Elements written by Patsy Millett and published by Fremantle Press. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dame Mary Durack Miller was born into a pastoral legacy that made her name famous even before she became one of Australia's most popular literary doyennes of the 20th century. Best known for her history of the Durack family, Kings in Grass Castles, Dame Mary was married to aviation pioneer Horrie Miller and was a sibling to the artist Elizabeth Durack. Among the multifarious threads woven into her life, she became a friend and confident to many celebrated writers, actors, and artists. Drawing on a great accumulation of first-hand sources, principally her mother's diaries and correspondence, Patsy Millett's book is about a well-known family who saw their prospects as blighted. Written from the unique perspective of someone born into the wash-up of the Durack dynasty, Patsy says her account 'will be controversial, as the reality behind the generally accepted facts has never been told.' Millet's story is unflinching. Her sharp, insightful prose and acerbic wit create an intimate portrait of an extraordinary writer whose family life was filled with triumph and tragedy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A singularly powerful and rigorous argument in favor of modern substance dualism In The Substance of Consciousness: A Comprehensive Defense of Contemporary Substance Dualism, two distinguished philosophers deliver a unique and powerful defense of contemporary substance dualism, which makes the claim that the human person is an embodied fundamental, immaterial, and unifying substance. Multidisciplinary in scope, the book explores areas of philosophy, cognitive science, neuroscience, and the sociology of mind-body beliefs. The authors present the most comprehensive, up-to-date, and rigorous non-edited work on substance dualism in the field, as well as a detailed history of how property and substance dualism have been presented and evaluated over the last 150 years. Alongside developing new and updated positive arguments for substance dualism, they also discuss key metaphysical notions and distinctions that inform the examination of substance dualism and its alternatives. Readers will also find: A thorough examination of the recent shift away from standard physicalism and the renaissance of substance dualism Comprehensive explorations of the likely future of substance dualism in the twenty-first century, including an exhaustive list of proposed research projects for substance dualists Practical discussion of new and rigorous critiques of significant physicality alternatives, including emergentism and panpsychism. Extensive treatments of philosophy of mind debates about the roles played by staunch/faint-hearted naturalism and theism in establishing or presuming methodology, epistemic priorities, and prior metaphysical commitments Perfect for professional philosophers, The Substance of Consciousness will also earn a place in the libraries of consciousness researchers, philosophical theologians, and religious studies scholars.

Book excerpt: Compared with the original German edition this volume contains the results of more recent research which have to some extent originated from problems raised in the previous German edition. Moreover, many minor and some important modifications have been carried out. For example paragraphs 2 — 5 were amended and their order changed. On the advice of G. Pickert, paragraph 7 has been thoroughly revised. Many improvements originate from H. J. Weinert who, by enlisting the services of a working team of the Teachers' Training College of Potsdam, has subjected large parts of this book to an exact and constructive review. This applies particularly to paragraphs 9, 50, 51, 60, 63, 66, 79, 92, 94, 97 and 100 and to the exercises. In this connection paragraphs 64 and 79 have had to be partly rewritten in consequence of the correction

Book Synopsis Understanding Community Today by : Edmund Aku PhD.
Download or read book Understanding Community Today written by Edmund Aku PhD. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2021-01-10 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today that it has become customary to refer simultaneously to both the global and ethnic entities as a community, it has become necessary to reexamine the meaning of this belabored concept. That is exactly the burden of this book. It intends to find a meaning for a community that bridges the parallel trends of globalization and ethnic awareness to thereby enrich all parties. I believe I found a reliable metaphor for community in another concept: the “person.” The search for this new understanding of community entails considering it vis-à-vis society. Both terms are usually used interchangeably, but as will soon be clear to us and as shown by research studies, they are not exactly identical. Effort is made in this work to avoid the limitations of the traditional application of the term “community.” Its features are reappreciated with this in view, taking into account also the multiethnic interest of this study. I incorparate the concept of “community of communities” to depict both the diversity among component communities and the unity that binds and characterizes them as a political entity.
