Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Damaged germinating northern red oak, Quercus rubra L., acorns in pitfall traps were significantly more attractive to two species of acorn insects than undamaged germinating acorns. Significantly more adults of the weevil Conotrachelus posticatus Boheman and the sap beetle Stelidota octomaculata (Say) were caught in traps containing germinating acorns cut into halves versus traps containing uncut, germinating acorns. Larvae of the acorn moth Valentinia glandulella (Riley) also preferred damaged over undamaged acorns, but few larvae were caught and the results were not analyzed. S3.

Download or read book Survival of Northern Red Oak Acorns After Fall Burning written by L. R. Auchmoody and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Survival of recently fallen northern red oak acorns after exposure to a cool fall burn was determined on experimental plots in northwestern Pennsylvania. The fire consumed the leaf litter and fine woody material of the forest floor and was considered as a typical fall burn for this region. No acorns were consumed by the fire but some were charred. Between 40 and 49 percent of the acorns contained in the litter were killed. The fire was not hot enough to kill Curculio weevil larvae within the acorns. Burned acorns infested with Curculio that survived the fire had 20 percent lower germination rates than unburned acorns.

Book Synopsis West Virginia Yellow-poplar Lumber Defect Database by : Lawrence E. Osborn
Download or read book West Virginia Yellow-poplar Lumber Defect Database written by Lawrence E. Osborn and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2In West Virginia, yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) is abundant and is a prime candidate for increased utilization in a variety of manufacturing industries. Computer simulations are a cost-effective tool for estimating potential cutting yields from lumber. They can be used to promote increased use of yellow-poplar in the furniture, cabinet, and architectural woodworking industries and may also lead to increased utilization of the lower grades of lumber. This paper describes the data collection methods and the format of the new West Virginia yellow-poplar lumber defect database that was developed for use with computer simulation programs. The database contains descriptions of 627 boards, totaling approximately 3,800 board feet, collected in West Virginia for grades FAS, FASIF, No. 1 Common, No. 2A Common, and No. 28 Common.S3.
