Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "International Symposium on Scleroderris Canker of Conifers" held June 21-24, 1983 in Syracuse, New York was the result of mutual interest expressed by the USDA Forest Service, the Canadian Forestry Service, and the State Uni versity of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF). The Symposium was an official function of the working party canker diseases (Scleroderris), Subject group S.2.06.02 Division II IUFRO. We wish to express our thanks to the USDA Forest Service, Research and the Canadian Forestry Service for financial support of the program, and SUNY ESF for hosting the Symposium. A major research program was launched in 1977 to study the biology of the European strain as found in North America. Support for this research resulted from spec i a 1 fund ing by the Congress of the United States to the USDA Forest Service, North Central Forest Experiment Station. Most of these funds were released as cooperative research grants to universities in the Lake States and the northeast. Many of the research papers delivered at this Symposium are the direct result of these research grants. While the Symposium deliberately emphasized the North American experience 'with Gremmeniella abietina in order to provide a focus for the meeting, we were anxious that this Symposium would also include studies from other countries.

Book Synopsis Forest Insect- and Disease-caused Impacts to Timber Resources of West-central Canada, 1988-1992 by : James Peter Brandt
Download or read book Forest Insect- and Disease-caused Impacts to Timber Resources of West-central Canada, 1988-1992 written by James Peter Brandt and published by Canadian Forest Service, Northern Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1995 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes the impacts caused by major forest insects (defoliators and bark beetles) and diseases (excluding those caused by fungi) to the timber resources of the Prairie Provinces and Northwest Territories in terms of wood volume losses due to tree mortality and growth reduction for the 1988-92 period. Most impacts were calculated using an automated system based on defoliation or infestation maps produced by geographic information systems and related inventory data. Results are presented for losses due to the following: spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana), jack pine budworm (C. pinus pinus), forest tent caterpillar (Malacosoma disstria), large aspen tortrix (C. conflictana), bruce spanworm (Operophtera bruceata), mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae), spruce beetle (D. rufipennis), Douglas-fir beetle (D. pseudotsugae), Lodgepole pine dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium americanum), and wood decay.

It discusses how to develop adaptive management scenarios to harvest resources in a sustainable way and provide ecosystem services and social functions. It includes new studies on ecological indicators, the carbon cycle, and ecosystem simulation models for various forest types: boreal, temperate, and tropical forests. NEW IN THE SECOND EDITION Provides a comprehensive collection of sustainable forest management principles and their applications Covers new ecological indicators that can be applied to address forest environmental issues Includes all types of models: empirical, gap, and process-based models Explains several basic ecological and management concepts in a clear, easy-to- understand manner This handbook is intended for researchers, academics, professionals, and undergraduate and graduate students studying and/or involved in the management of forest ecosystems. Book Synopsis Host and Vector Surveys for the Pinewood Nematode, Bursaphelenchus Xylophilus (Steiner and Buhrer) Nickle (Nematoda: Aphelenchoididae) in Canada by : W. W. Bowers
Download or read book Host and Vector Surveys for the Pinewood Nematode, Bursaphelenchus Xylophilus (Steiner and Buhrer) Nickle (Nematoda: Aphelenchoididae) in Canada written by W. W. Bowers and published by St. John's : Forestry Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region. This book was released on 1992 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pinewood nematode is an important forest pest because it causes wilting and considerable tree mortality, particularly in Japan. It was first reported in Manitoba in 1982, although there are no cases of tree mortality in Canada. It is ranked in the first level as a potentially important pest internationally and the Scandinavian countries have restricted the importation of conifer chips and timber from countries where the pest is known to occur, a major concern of Canadian forest managers and lumber exporters. In 1985, the Forest Insect and Disease Survey began a nationwide survey to determine the distribution of the pinewood nematode. This report briefly reviews its history and biology and presents the results of the Canadian survey.
