Book Synopsis Memphis Under the Ptolemies by : Dorothy J. Thompson
Download or read book Memphis Under the Ptolemies written by Dorothy J. Thompson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on archaeological findings and an unusual combination of Greek and Egyptian evidence, Dorothy Thompson examines the economic life and multicultural society of the ancient Egyptian city of Memphis in the era between Alexander and Augustus. Now thoroughly revised and updated, this masterful account is essential reading for anyone interested in ancient Egypt or the Hellenistic world. The relationship of the native population with the Greek-speaking immigrants is illustrated in Thompson's analysis of the position of Memphite priests within the Ptolemaic state. Egyptians continued to control mummification and the cult of the dead; the undertakers of the Memphite necropolis were barely touched by things Greek. The cult of the living Apis bull also remained primarily Egyptian; yet on death the bull, deified as Osorapis, became Sarapis for the Greeks. Within this god's sacred enclosure, the Sarapieion, is found a strange amalgam of Greek and Egyptian cultures.

Book Synopsis The Land of the Body by : Sarah Pearce
Download or read book The Land of the Body written by Sarah Pearce and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2007 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first extended study of the representation of Egypt in the writings of Philo of Alexandria. Philo is a crucial witness, not only to the experiences of the Jews of Alexandria, but to the world of early Roman Egypt in general. As historians of Roman Alexandria and Egypt are well aware, we have access to very few voices from inside the country in this era; Philo is the best we have. As a commentator on Jewish Scripture, Philo is also one of the most valuable sources for the interpretation of Egypt in the Pentateuch. He not only writes very extensively on this subject, but he does so in ways that are remarkable for their originality when compared with the surviving literature of ancient Judaism. In this book, Sarah Pearce tries to understand Philo in relation to the wider context in which he lived and worked. Key areas for investigation include: defining the 'Egyptian' in Philo's world; Philo's treatment of the Egypt of the Pentateuch as a symbol of 'the land of the body'; Philo's emphasis on Egyptian inhospitableness; and his treatment of Egyptian religion, focusing on Nile veneration and animal worship.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a product of the Inscriptions of India programme of the Indian Council of Historical Research, undertaken with a view to make inscriptions, dating from circa sixth to fourteenth century a.d., available in handy volumes. Part I of the volume introduces Sarabha-puriyas, Panduvamsins and Somavamsins, who played a major role in shaping the destinies of the Chhattisgarh (Kosala) and the adjoining region of Orissa from about sixth to the early twelfth century a.d. It provides a background to the study of the inscriptions by attempting to deal with their formal aspects like the format, palaeography, language, orthography, contents and methods of dating and to trace, for the first time, the evolution of their draft. Part II presents the formal and historical aspects of the inscrip-tions, critically edited texts and fairly compre-hensive abstracts of the records of the Sarabha-puriyas, Panduvamsins of Mekala and South Kosala, and Somavamsins of Kosala and Orissa. It also includes allied inscriptions like the Mallar plates of the Amararyakula chief Vyaghraraja and the Malga plates of Samanta Indraraja. Some of these inscriptions have not yet been published anywhere.

Book Synopsis Corpus Inscriptionum Arabicarum Palaestinae, Addendum by : Moshe Sharon
Download or read book Corpus Inscriptionum Arabicarum Palaestinae, Addendum written by Moshe Sharon and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his research of the Arabic inscriptions in the Middle East at the end of the 19th century, Max van Berchem collected many squeezes of inscriptions. These squeezes are stored in the archives of the Fondation Max van Berchem in Geneva. The present publication wishes to present a scholarly record of these squeezes, many of which represent inscriptions that do no longer exist. This publication is the first of, hopefully, two addenda which will constitute a full record of one of the few treasures left by the great epigrapher in his archives. For many students of Arabic epigraphy these squeezes afford the only opportunity to have a close glimpse of the originals as possible, and learn about their contents with the aid of the photographs and studies which accompany them in this volume.
