Book excerpt: I integrate the literatures on global strategy and innovation management to explain how domestic firms and subsidiaries of foreign firms innovate. Building on the knowledge-based view, I argue that subsidiaries of foreign firms and domestic firms have access to different knowledge sources and manage their employees differently, resulting in them following different innovation paths. Specifically, I propose that subsidiaries of foreign firms may benefit from what I call the advantage of foreignness in innovation, in which their access to global knowledge sources and management of employees to have a multicultural mindset support their global innovation. I also argue that domestic firms may enjoy what I call the advantage of localness in innovation, in which their deep and contextualized local knowledge and management of employees to focus on the local market support their local innovation. As a result, domestic firms and subsidiaries of foreign firms may generate different types of innovations, which provide them with a relative competitive advantage when they face each other depending on whether the innovations are for end-user customers or for other firms, and whether the industry is global or local in nature. Although the strength of these relative advantages diminishes over time as subsidiaries and domestic companies imitate each other, the relative advantages remain because each type of firm faces a particular constraint in its ability to imitate the other type of firm.
Book Synopsis Multinational Firms, Innovation and Productivity by : D. Castellani
Download or read book Multinational Firms, Innovation and Productivity written by D. Castellani and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book assumes an original place in the literature. . . Castellani and Zanfei show that the economic impact of MNEs on innovation and productivity depends on evolutionary features of firms and industries, particularly on the heterogeneity of firm strategies and behaviours. . . this volume contains high-quality, well-written research. . . Simona Iammarino, Research Policy . . . this book offers the reader a well-written and very comprehensive analysis on the link between innovation and internalization which leads to insights into firm heterogeneity. The authors have succeeded in synthesizing the vast body of theoretical and empirical research and given an up-to-date overview of the various issues involved. This is then complemented with their own research findings. . . The book will undoubtedly enrich the debate on the behavior and impact of MNEs. Yama Temouri, Journal of International Business Studies Davide Castellani and Antonello Zanfei, two well-known Italian economists, have brought forth an excellent new book. . . I think this book will serve as a starting-point for many interesting studies, both because of its findings and because of its empirical and theoretical rigour. . . the book lays an excellent and empirically well founded foundation that opens the way for what we need most in research on the international innovatory activities and R&D configurations of MNCs: intrafirm data and the study of intrafirm processes, configurations and specific interactions with the host country environment. The book to me is an important step in moving innovation research forward in this direction. . . I am sure that this book will serve as a thought-provoking starting point for many future studies on firms international innovatory activities and therefore recommend it without any reservation. Marcus M. Keupp, Creativity and Innovation Management Castellani and Zanfei have developed an original and comprehensive analysis of the role of multinational firms in the transfer, creation and diffusion of technology. By developing their view of the multinationals as double network institutions , the authors provide new insights on a variety of key issues at the frontier of economics of international production and innovation. This book is thought-provoking, incisive and topical, and should be required reading for both economists and policymakers alike. Rajneesh Narula, University of Reading, UK Castellani and Zanfei present an in-depth theoretical and empirical analysis of the key issues underpinning the relationship between innovation and multinationality. This book is strongly-recommended reading for any researcher working on innovation or multinationality or the interface between the two. Grazia Ietto-Gillies, London South Bank University, UK This book gets to the root of how and why multinational firms differ in the cross-border creation, transfer and diffusion of technology, and provides fresh evidence on the effects that these differences have on productivity and innovation in the economic systems in which they are active. Davide Castellani and Antonello Zanfei consider multinationals as heterogeneous institutions that combine internal networks of subsidiaries with external networks of collaborative linkages, to bridge different economic and innovation systems. They examine heterogeneity in productivity and innovative behaviour between multinational and national firms, as well as across and within multinationals. The authors argue that not every foreign firm is a good source of externality, and not every domestic firm is equally well placed to benefit from multinationals. It is shown that spillovers from multinationals differ according to the technological profiles, embeddedness and linkage creation of both foreign and domestic firms active in local markets. The book supports this view with empirical evidence based on illustrative case studies, and on econometric analysis using extensive firm-level datasets on multinati

Book Synopsis The Impact of FDI on Domestic Firm Innovation by : Yan Liu
Download or read book The Impact of FDI on Domestic Firm Innovation written by Yan Liu and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper studies the impact of foreign direct investment on domestic firms' innovation in China. It provides causal evidence by exploiting China's foreign direct investment deregulation in 2002 and employs a difference-in-difference estimation strategy. Using a matched firm-patent data set from 1998 to 2007, the results show that the quantity and quality of domestic firms' innovation benefit from foreign direct investment. Moreover, the paper emphasizes the importance of knowledge spillover from foreign direct investment in similar technology domains. The analysis examines the role of horizontal foreign direct investment and foreign direct investment in technologically close industries'industries that share similar technology domains. The findings show that foreign direct investment in technologically close industries generates much bigger positive spillovers than horizontal foreign direct investment. The paper also shows that knowledge spillover from foreign direct investment in similar technology domains is not driven by input-out linkages. Moreover, the spillover effect is stronger in cities with higher human capital stock and firms with higher absorptive capacity.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Innovation Systems and Developing Countries by : Bengt-Åke Lundvall
Download or read book Handbook of Innovation Systems and Developing Countries written by Bengt-Åke Lundvall and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The innovation systems (IS) approach emerged as a theoretical framework in the industrialized world in the mid-1990s to explain innovation and growth in the developed world. This Handbook is the first attempt to adapt the IS approach to developing countries from a theoretical and empirical viewpoint. The Handbook brings eminent scholars in economics, innovation and development studies together with promising young researchers to review the literature and push theoretical boundaries. They critically review the IS approach and its adequacy for developing countries, discuss the relationship between IS and development, and address the question of how it should be adapted to the realities of developing nations. Spanning national, sectoral and regional innovation systems across Asia, Latin America and Africa, and written by the world s leading scholars within the field, this comprehensive Handbook will strongly appeal to academics, researchers and students with an interest in innovation and technology in developing countries.
Book Synopsis Domestic Firm Innovation and Networking with Foreign Firms in China's ICT Industry by : Yifei Sun
Download or read book Domestic Firm Innovation and Networking with Foreign Firms in China's ICT Industry written by Yifei Sun and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study systematically analyzes the impacts of supplier-client as well as technological linkages with foreign firms on domestic firm technological innovation based on a unique dataset that was collected through a survey with 600 plus firms in China's information communication technology industry. The results revealed that Chinese firms were engaged in extensive supplier-client relationships with foreign firms, although their technological collaborations with foreign firms were very limited. It was found that firm innovation benefited significantly from their technological relationships with foreign firms. However, the results also found that export/import did contribute to domestic firm innovation, although supplier-client relationships with foreign invested enterprises (FIEs) in China did not show positive effects on domestic firm innovation. The analyses further showed that such market transactions between domestic and foreign firms helped building technological linkages between domestic firms and foreign firms. Such results clearly demonstrated the value of networking in enhancing firm innovation in developing countries.
Book Synopsis Innovation and National Security by : Adam Segal
Download or read book Innovation and National Security written by Adam Segal and published by Council on Foreign Relations Press. This book was released on 2019-09-18 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past three-quarters of a century, the United States has led the world in technological innovation and development. The nation now risks falling behind its competitors, principally China. The United States needs to advance a national innovation strategy to ensure it remains the predominant power in a range of emerging technologies. Innovation and National Security: Keeping Our Edge outlines a strategy based on four pillars: restoring federal funding for research and development, attracting and educating a science and technology workforce, supporting technology adoption in the defense sector, and bolstering and scaling technology alliances and ecosystems. Failure could lead to a future in which rivals strengthen their militaries and threaten U.S. security interests, and new innovation centers replace the United States as the source of original ideas and inspiration for the world.

Book Synopsis Does FDI Increase Product Innovation of Domestic Firms? Evidence from China by : Yue Lu
Download or read book Does FDI Increase Product Innovation of Domestic Firms? Evidence from China written by Yue Lu and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploiting a change in policy governing the entry of foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2002, we apply the difference-in-differences model to estimate the effects of FDI on the product scope of domestic Chinese firms. In industries that experienced relaxation in FDI regulations, the average product scope increased by 5% which indicates more product innovation. Through vertical linkages, the product scope of firms is positively (negatively) affected by FDI in upstream (downstream) industries. The negative effect of FDI in downstream industries occurs because foreign firms engaging in processing trade rely more on imported inputs than inputs from domestic suppliers. The main channels of effect are firm-level R&D and industry-level technological distance, as FDI entry leads to an improvement in these variables. However, the positive effects of FDI on product innovation have limits. We found that these effects are present in medium- and low-tech industries but not in high-tech industries. Additionally, new products are mainly introduced within the same industry rather than across different industries.
Book Synopsis Transnational Corporations and Local Innovation by : Jose Cassiolato
Download or read book Transnational Corporations and Local Innovation written by Jose Cassiolato and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series of books brings together results of an intensive research programme on aspects of the national systems of innovation (NSI) in the five BRICS countries — Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. It provides a comprehensive and comparative examination of the challenges and opportunities faced by these dynamic and emerging economies. In discussing the impact of innovation with respect to economic, geopolitical, socio-cultural, institutional, and technological systems, it reveals the possibilities of new development paradigms for equitable and sustainable growth. This volume explores the relationship between transnational corporations (TNCs) and NSI across BRICS economies. The essays highlight the role of foreign direct investment (FDI), the evolution of TNCs and examine local factors — such as government policies, human resources, market structures, and technological capabilities — that affect collaborative efforts with indigenous firms towards innovation and development. The authors approach the thesis of technological globalisation with some caution, refuting the idea that research and development (R&D) activities have been inexorably internationalised. Original and detailed data, together with expert analyses on wide-ranging issues, make this book an invaluable resource for researchers and scholars in economics, development studies and political science, in addition to policy makers and development practitioners interested in the BRICS countries.
Book Synopsis Firm Innovation in Emerging Markets by : Meghana Ayyagari
Download or read book Firm Innovation in Emerging Markets written by Meghana Ayyagari and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2012 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors investigate the determinants of firm innovation in over 19,000 firms across 47 developing economies. They define the innovation process broadly, to include not only core innovation such as the introduction of new products and new technologies, but also other types of activities that promote knowledge transfers and adapt production processes. The authors find that more innovative firms are large exporting firms characterized by private ownership, highly educated managers with mid-level managerial experience, and access to external finance. In contrast, firms that do not innovate much are typically state-owned firms without foreign competitors. The identity of the controlling shareholder seems to be particularly important for core innovation, with those private firms whose controlling shareholder is a financial institution being the least innovative. While the use of external finance is associated with greater innovation by all private firms, it does not make state-owned firms more innovative. Financing from foreign banks is associated with higher levels of innovation compared with financing from domestic banks.
Book Synopsis Innovation in Global Industries by : National Research Council
Download or read book Innovation in Global Industries written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-06-12 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate over offshoring of production, transfer of technological capabilities, and potential loss of U.S. competitiveness is a long-running one. Prevailing thinking is that "the world is flat"â€"that is, innovative capacity is spreading uniformly; as new centers of manufacturing emerge, research and development and new product development follow. Innovation in Global Industries challenges this thinking. The book, a collection of individually authored studies, examines in detail structural changes in the innovation process in 10 service as well as manufacturing industries: personal computers; semiconductors; flat-panel displays; software; lighting; biotechnology; pharmaceuticals; financial services; logistics; and venture capital. There is no doubt that overall there has been an acceleration in global sourcing of innovation and an emergence of new locations of research capacity and advanced technical skills, but the patterns are highly variable. Many industries and some firms in nearly all industries retain leading-edge capacity in the United States. However, the book concludes that is no reason for complacency about the future outlook. Innovation deserves more emphasis in firm performance measures and more sustained support in public policy. Innovation in Global Industries will be of special interest to business people and government policy makers as well as professors, students, and other researchers of economics, management, international affairs, and political science.
Book Synopsis FDI, Technology and Innovation by : N. S. Siddharthan
Download or read book FDI, Technology and Innovation written by N. S. Siddharthan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-13 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concentrates on major changes that are now taking place in the fields of technology, foreign direct investment (FDI), trade and development strategies, with a particular focus on India. Arguably, these changes are likely to differ from those that the world has experienced over the past few decades; in particular, now that many countries have globalised their economies. The book begins by reviewing the changing pattern of FDI flows and technologies among developed and emerging economies, before identifying the determinants of this change by presenting specific studies on Indian industries. It then addresses key questions such as: How are knowledge spillover mechanisms operationalised, and what are the implications of the internationalisation of the IPR process? The role of FDI is also analysed in order to make policy recommendations for fostering innovation in emerging economies like India. The respective chapters examine the process through which technological paradigm and trajectory shifts are taking place, the factors that facilitate such shifts, the changing pattern of FDI, and the shifting focus of international trade and development strategies – four broad themes that are interrelated and mutually reinforcing. The book offers important takeaways for all social scientists, technologists and business schools interested in Indian studies; it will also benefit researchers whose work involves development economics, industrial organisation and technology, and the economy / society interface.
Book Synopsis Innovation and foreign ownership by : Maria Guadalupe
Download or read book Innovation and foreign ownership written by Maria Guadalupe and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper uses a rich panel dataset of Spanish manufacturing firms (1990-2006) and a propensity score reweighting estimator to show that multinational firms acquire the most productive domestic firms, which, on acquisition, conduct more product and process innovation (simultaneously adopting new machines and organizational practices) and adopt foreign technologies, leading to higher productivity. We propose a model of endogenous selection and innovation in heterogeneous firms that jointly explains the observed selection process and the innovation decisions. Further, we show in the data that innovation on acquisition is associated with the increased market scale provided by the parent firm.
Book Synopsis Foreign Direct Investment and the Incentives to Innovate and Imitate by : Irene Brambilla
Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment and the Incentives to Innovate and Imitate written by Irene Brambilla and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We propose a new channel of FDI spillovers on domestic firms, which operates through imitation of original products. Domestic heterogeneous firms may not introduce any new products, introduce a new product line (innovate), or develop a variety that is a close substitute to an existing product line (imitate). The presence of foreign firms generates incentives for imitation because they introduce original products that are vertically differentiated from domestic products. Using firm-level panel data for China, we find that increased FDI presence in a given industry leads to more imitation, but not necessarily more innovation, by domestic firms.
Book Synopsis The Roles of Immigrants and Foreign Students in US Science, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship by : Ina Ganguli
Download or read book The Roles of Immigrants and Foreign Students in US Science, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship written by Ina Ganguli and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-02-19 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of immigrants in the US science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce and among recipients of advanced STEM degrees at US universities has increased in recent decades. In light of the current public debate about immigration, there is a need for evidence on the economic impacts of immigrants on the STEM workforce and on innovation. Using new data and state-of-the-art empirical methods, this volume examines various aspects of the relationships between immigration, innovation, and entrepreneurship, including the effects of changes in the number of immigrants and their skill composition on the rate of innovation; the relationship between high-skilled immigration and entrepreneurship; and the differences between immigrant and native entrepreneurs. It presents new evidence on the postgraduation migration patterns of STEM doctoral recipients, in particular the likelihood these graduates will return to their home country. This volume also examines the role of the US higher education system and of US visa policy in attracting foreign students for graduate study and retaining them after graduation.
Download or read book Lead Markets written by Marian Beise and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. 1 Summary This thesis intends to answer three questions: First, what is a lead market; second, what constitutes a lead market, and third, how companies can harness lead markets to generate global innovations. Considering the international, cross-border diffu sion of innovations one can observe that a particular technological design such as the facsimile machine, the personal computer or the mobile cellular telephone is often adopted by one country or region much earlier than by other countries which subsequently follow this country, which I will call the lead market. A lead market is defined as a country that adopts an innovation that is subsequently adopted worldwide. When different designs of an innovation compete internationally, the design preferred in the lead market becomes the global dominant design. The study suggests a theoretical explanation for the phenomena of lead markets and collects empirical evidence from a detailed case study of the cellular mobile tele of an innovation design adopted first phone industry. The international diffusion by the lead market, i. e. subsequent adoption of an innovation design preferred in the lead market by other countries, can be put down to the special market context in the lead market. The market context includes demand preferences, the environ mental condition and the degree of competition. Multinational firms are often confronted not only with varying market acceptance of new products and processes from country to country, but with national prefer ences for particular specifications of an innovation, i. e.
