This book was released on 2011-07-07 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural innovation must be at the heart of both Europe and the UK's policy-making, in an effort to respond to a rising global population, to the challenges of climate change and to food price volatility. Farmers cannot be expected to rise to these exceptional challenges without significant help. The EU collectively, and Member States nationally, must do more to help solve these problems. There are three main areas that the European Union Committee strongly urges the EU to consider in the current debate about the future of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and innovation policy: the European Commission must significantly increase investment in scientific research in the agricultural sector by reducing the proportion of funding devoted to the CAP and diverting it to agricultural research by the EU's Research Programme; all countries must ensure that innovative knowledge is fully communicated to the agricultural sector via better farm advice systems; the innovation-hostile environment of Brussels must be overcome.

Book excerpt: More than ever, innovation is key for the agricultural sector. Producing sufficient and healthy food for everyone, now and in the future - while facing more extreme weather, fickle markets and critical consumers - are challenges that innovation can help to address. A more competitive European agriculture and forestry, which also protects the environment, leads to productive and vibrant rural areas. The EU Member States and the European Commission set up the EIP-AGRI to help farmers, scientists and everyone working with them to find innovative ways to make EU agriculture more productive and sustainable. The EIP-AGRI is still young, and the coming year will be crucial for it to grow and fulfil its promise.

Book Synopsis Economics of Research and Innovation in Agriculture by : Petra Moser
Download or read book Economics of Research and Innovation in Agriculture written by Petra Moser and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-10-08 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The challenges facing agriculture are plenty. Along with the world's growing population and diminishing amounts of water and arable land, the gradual increase in severe weather presents new challenges and imperatives for producing new, more resilient crops to feed a more crowded planet in the twenty-first century. Innovation has historically helped agriculture keep pace with earth's social, population, and ecological changes. In the last 50 years, mechanical, biological, and chemical innovations have more than doubled agricultural output while barely changing input quantities. The ample investment behind these innovations was available because of a high rate of return: a 2007 paper found that the median ROI in agriculture was 45 percent between 1965 and 2005. This landscape has changed. Today many of the world's wealthier countries have scaled back their share of GDP devoted to agricultural R&D amid evidence of diminishing returns. Universities, which have historically been a major source of agricultural innovation, increasingly depend on funding from industry rather than government to fund their research. As Upton Sinclair wrote of the effects industry influences, "It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it." In this volume of the NBER Conference Report series, editor Petra Moser offers an empirical, applied-economic framework to the different elements of agricultural R&D, particularly as they relate to the shift from public to private funding. Individual chapters examine the sources of agricultural knowledge and investigate challenges for measuring the returns to the adoption of new agricultural technologies, examine knowledge spillovers from universities to agricultural innovation, and explore interactions between university engagement and scientific productivity. Additional analysis of agricultural venture capital point to it as an emerging and future source of resource in this essential domain"--

Book Synopsis Handbook on establishing and operating multi-actors agricultural innovation platforms by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Handbook on establishing and operating multi-actors agricultural innovation platforms written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-11-02 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multi-actor agricultural innovation platforms (MAIPs), as models for inclusive and collaborative innovation, are increasingly deployed in farmer communities to solve the last-mile bottleneck, namely, the empowerment of smallholder farmers and value chain actors to access innovation and services to drive field-level change. Facilitators play a critical role in establishing and operating MAIPs, stimulating interactions among MAIP actors and thereby supporting co-innovation and co-learning processes. They are usually specialized MAIP actors (e.g. researchers, extension agents, agricultural educationists, brokers, NGO activists, traders and processors). Qualified MAIP facilitators, as value chain intermediaries and coordinators, are required to have strong facilitation skills and relevant technical background. They are normally trained through training of MAIP facilitator courses or through the implementation of a MAIP. This handbook aims to support MAIP facilitators to establish and operate MAIPs. It summarizes the experience of the MAIPs in persimmon, hazelnut and honey value chains that FAO implemented as part of the European Union-funded project “Development of sustainable and inclusive local food systems in north-west region of Azerbaijan (GCP/AZE/014/EC)”, the “Tropical Agricultural Platform Agricultural Innovation System (TAP-AIS)” project implemented in Malawi, and the Science and Technology Backyard (STB) initiative led by the China Agricultural University (CAU). It also draws on the experience of the training course “Training of master trainers for establishing and operating Multi-actors Agricultural Innovation Platforms” co-organized by FAO and CAU on 11–15 July 2023.
Book Synopsis Research Handbook on EU Agriculture Law by : Joseph A. McMahon
Download or read book Research Handbook on EU Agriculture Law written by Joseph A. McMahon and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-27 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the conclusion of the latest round of reforms to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in 2013, the Research Handbook on EU Agriculture Law provides an up-to-date discussion of these reforms and the changing landscape in which the CAP now operates. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, and with international contributors from across Europe and the United States, the Handbook commences with analyses of the legal instruments which implement the reformed CAP, before moving on to consider questions of land use, the role of agriculture within the wider food chain and the international dimension. In these contexts, particular issues identified include: the environmental impact of past, present and future farming practices; the ability of the food chain to accommodate consumer preferences and scientific innovation; and the hurdles to be cleared before international consensus can be reached on a whole range of agricultural imperatives. As well as providing a state-of-the-art point of reference for academics, this comprehensive book will be of great interest to students, scholars and policymakers dealing with these new challenges faced by agriculture in the EU.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of a European project to assess the opportunities and limitations of a sectoral approach to training, this synthesis report focuses on innovation and training in the agribusiness complex. Chapter 1 discusses the study objectives, which were to gain more insight into the relationship between innovation and qualification in product chains; into the role of training agencies and other sectoral agencies in the transfer of innovations and adaptation of qualifications in product chains; and into an assessment of opportunities and limitations of sectoral training systems in situations of rapid technological change and economic restructuring. Chapter 2 highlights key concepts used in the studies. Chapter 3 gives an overview of the following product chains studied in five countries: beer production in Belgium; cheese production in Greece; bread production in Spain; vegetable production in the United Kingdom; and meat production in the Netherlands. It describes the structure of the chains and major innovations occurring. Chapters 4-7 address the following four basic issues regarding innovation and training in the agribusiness product chains: impact of innovations on qualifications; role of sectoral agencies in training for new qualifications; transfer of innovations and the knowledge infrastructure; and role of networks in innovation and training. Chapter 8 addresses five basic issues: innovation in the investigated product chains; impact of innovation on qualifications; sectoral training agencies and innovation-related training; and knowledge infrastructure in agribusiness.
