Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MESSAGE TO MY READERS When I am seeking information about an unfamiliar topic and thumb through a book, I do not want to see a lot of prose that plays Ring Around the Rosie about irrelevant stuff. I am looking for solutions to serious problems and want to see the nitty-gritty of thematter laid bare, and presented in outline form, in a clear, precise, detailed fashion of what and what not to do. If you feel the same, this is the book for you. One of the biggest problems in the inn business is that a vast segment of your guests will not return, not because they do not like your inn, but because they want to explore newplaces. The book addresses this problem head-on and spells out the solution on a multitude of fronts, in easy-to-understand detail, using many lists and outlines, so that these non returning guests are replaced without you spending huge amounts for advertising. Another unique problem of the inn business is that your inventory, unlike a typical retailer's, will disappear if rooms are not rented. This is examined in depth, and solutions are presented to fill the rooms so the problem is kept to a minimum. What is really exciting is that this is not just another run-of-the-mill book about inn keeping. The author was not satisfied with the status quo of the usual business operation and set out to seek perfection. This was not achieved overnight, and every new idea went through many trials and errors before the perfect system was developed. Room supplies, for example, were first laid out in easy-to-reach display fashion in the closets on each floor. This gave way to having the supplies in plastic cabinets on wheels so they could be rolled into the rooms. This, too, turned out to be less than satisfactory because of the restocking problem. To convey what was needed foreach cabinet, two-way radios were tried, and even a video method was considered. Finally, the perfect system was developed and thoroughly tested. It is fully described in detail so the reader canduplicate it in his or her own inn.

But when the innkeeper dies suddenly, his genteel wife, Jane Bell, becomes the reluctant owner. Jane has no notion of how to run a business. However, with the town's livelihood at stake and a large loan due, she must find a way to bring new life to the inn. Despite their strained relationship, Jane turns to her resentful mother-in-law, Thora, for help. Formerly mistress of The Bell, Thora is struggling to find her place in the world. As she and Jane work together, they form a measure of trust, and Thora's wounded heart begins to heal. When she encounters two men from her past, she sees them--and her future--in a different light. With pressure mounting from the bank, Jane employs innovative methods to turn the inn around, and puzzles over the intentions of several men who seem to have a vested interest in the place. Will her efforts be enough to save The Bell? And will Thora embrace the possibility of a second chance at love?

Book excerpt: I am the Innkeeper, and my stories are both true and unique. Thumb through the pages. You will find over a hundred images to accompany some teenage exploits, a stint as an Air Force bomber pilot, some romantic encounters, a dive for treasure off a ship that sank in 1862, and 43 years as owner and Innkeeper of a small, seaside inn on a tropical beach in Mexico. Manzanillo, in the tiny state of Colima, is the major setting for these adventures, and you will take away a singular view of the Mexican people you won’t find in papers and magazines. Intermix Spaniards with Indians and the result is quite something. You’ll see. Innkeeper is a journey. Along the way you will meet Ken Kesey, Bing Crosby, Lee Marvin, Lyndon Johnson’s brother (I didn’t know he had one, either), Jack Ruby and many others. I expound a few times about things better presented by wiser persons, but that’s part of the fun in my book. My wife is German and calls me Herr Besserwisser which translates into Mr. Know-it-all. I can explain that. Other than Mexico, you’ll spend time with me in North Africa, Spain, France, Italy, Iceland, Costa Rica, and underwater off the coast of Guam. And there will be sea snakes, alligators, sharks and their human equivalents to hold your attention. Enjoy my tale.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To be labeled "of ill repute" in medieval society implied that a person had committed a violation of accepted standards and had stepped beyond the bounds of permissible behavior. To have a reputation "of good repute", however, was so powerful as to help a person accused of a crime be acquitted by his or her fellow peers. Labeling a person in medieval times was a complex matter. Often, unwritten codes of behavior determined who was of good repute and who was not. Members of the nobility committing a "fur-collar crime" might have considerable leeway to oppress their neighbors with violence and legal violations; however, a woman caught without appropriate attire and without the proper escort hazarded the label of a "woman of ill repute." Gender, class, social statutes, wealth, connections, bribes, friends, and the community all played a role in how quickly or how permanently a person's reputation was damaged. 'Of Good and Ill Repute' examines the complex social regulations and stigmatizations that medieval society used to arrive at its decisions about condemnation and exoneration. In eleven interrelated essays, including three previously unpublished works, Hanawalt explores how social control was maintained in Medieval England in the later Middle Ages. Focusing on gender, criminal behavior, law enforcement, arbitration, and cultural rituals of inclusion and exclusion, 'Of Good and Ill Repute' reflects the most current scholarship on medieval legal history, cultural history, and gender studies. It looks at the medieval sermons, advice books, manuals of penance, popular poetry, laws, legal treatises, court records, and city and guild ordinances that drew the lines between good and bad behavior. Written in a lively, accessible, and jargon-free style, this text is essential for upper level undergraduate history courses on medieval history and women's history as well as for English courses on medieval literature.

Book excerpt: “With edge-of-your-seat suspense, Goodnight’s deliciously intricate series draws to a close . . . Many truths are slowly revealed as love overtakes regret.” —Library Journal (starred review) Welcome to Honey Ridge, Tennessee, where Southern hospitality and sweet peach tea beckon, and where long-buried secrets lead to some startling realizations . . . Grayson Blake always has a purpose—and never a moment to lose. He’s come home to Honey Ridge to convert a historic gristmill into a restaurant, but his plans crumble like Tennessee clay when the excavation of a skeleton unearths a Civil War mystery . . . and leads him back to a beautiful and familiar stranger. Once a ballet dancer, now co-owner of the Peach Orchard Inn, Valery Carter harbors pain as deep as the secrets buried beneath the mill. A bright facade can’t erase her regrets any more than a glass of bourbon can restore what she’s lost. But spending time with Grayson offers Valery a chance to let go of her past and imagine a happier future. And with the discovery of hidden messages in aged sheet music, both their hearts begin to open. Bound by attraction, and compelled to resolve an old crime that links the inn and the mill, Grayson and Valery encounter a song of hurt, truth . . . and hope. “Goodnight’s third Honey Ridge book blends past and present in another seamless tale that will touch the hearts of her readers.” —The Romance Dish
