Book excerpt: "Childhood is ideally a time of safety, marked by freedom from the economic, sexual, and political demands that later become part of adult life. For many children, however, particularly those who live in our inner cities, childhood is increasingly a time of danger. The urban war zones of Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington. D.C., are not unlike the war zones of Beirut, Belfast, and Mozambique. In both worlds, children grow up with firsthand knowledge of terror and violence. This book examines the threat to childhood development posed by living amid chronic community violence. It shows caregiving adults such as teachers, psychologists, social workers, and counselors how they can work together to help children while they are still children--before they become angry, aggressive adults." "Drawing on their extensive fieldwork in war zones around the world, the authors explore the link between a child's response to growing up in an atmosphere of violence and danger, and the social context established for that child by community and caregivers. They reveal the need for establishing predictable, structured, safe environments for children and they show how school-based programs, by providing children with the continuity and regularity that is otherwise lacking in their lives, can enhance children's natural resilience and help ameliorate some of the long-term developmental consequences of living in danger. In addition to providing firsthand accounts of how children growing up in an atmosphere of violence address their situations, the authors also examine the special concerns that relate to the training and support of teachers who deal not only with the violence in the lives of the children they teach, but also with their own personal safety and emotional response to their students' traumas."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Children and Political Violence by : Ed Cairns
Download or read book Children and Political Violence written by Ed Cairns and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1996-01-23 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The post-war world has become characterized by fierce new assertions of nationalism and sovereignty. Many regions - such as Bosnia, Somalia and Northern Ireland - are threatened by violent ethnic, religious and cultural strife. Almost daily on our television screens we see the faces of frightened children caught up in war, yet research into the effects of war on children is patchy and not well known. Children and Political Violence provides a critical evaluation of attempts to answer questions about the impact of political violence on such topics as children's aggression, moral development, and interpersonal relations. Much of the material is concerned with children who witness, experience or participate in violent acts, and with the children's stress and coping in violent circumstances. Other chapters deal with the effects on the social fabric of children's lives of the loss of families, destruction of social networks, homelessness, and the challenge of ensuring that the next generation grows up to reject violence as a way of settling political disputes. Written in a highly accessible style with many real-life examples, Children and Political Violence will be of broad interest to students, researchers and practitioners in child psychology and psychiatry, education, conflict studies and peace studies.

This book was released on 2000-09-17 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unsparing and important. . . . An informative, clearheaded and sobering book.—Jonathan Yardley, Washington Post (1999 Critic's Choice) Inner-city black America is often stereotyped as a place of random violence, but in fact, violence in the inner city is regulated through an informal but well-known code of the street. This unwritten set of rules—based largely on an individual's ability to command respect—is a powerful and pervasive form of etiquette, governing the way in which people learn to negotiate public spaces. Elijah Anderson's incisive book delineates the code and examines it as a response to the lack of jobs that pay a living wage, to the stigma of race, to rampant drug use, to alienation and lack of hope.

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Applied Developmental Science written by Celia B Fisher and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2004-10-16 with total page 1361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The most comprehensive, one-stop source for the latest in applied developmental science." —Don Floyd, President and CEO, National 4-H Council The Encyclopedia of Applied Developmental Science is an important and timely contribution to this burgeoning field. This four-volume set is the authoritative source that encompasses the entire range of concepts and topics involved in the study of applied developmental science. Its contents and levels have broad appeal for those interested in how the application of knowledge about human development can be used to enhance the lives of individuals, families, and communities. The breadth of activity in applied developmental science makes adequate representation of its concepts and topics a daunting challenge. To this end, the encyclopedia seeks to answer the following questions: How may information about this field be integrated in a manner accessible, meaningful, and useful to the next generation of the leaders of our nation and world? How may we best convey the knowledge necessary for them to understand the nature of their development and the way that they may contribute positively to their own lives, to their families and communities, and to the designed and natural environments of which they will be stewards? The Encyclopedia of Applied Developmental Science provides the most effective way to address these questions. It includes entries written in an authoritative but not overly technical manner by the broad range of scholars and practitioners involved in applied developmental science. In addition to an alphabetical table of contents, there is a readers′ guide that organizes the entries into 30 content categories to help the reader locate similarly themed entries with ease. The encyclopedia is ideal for libraries serving those with interests in psychology, human development/human ecology, education, sociology, family and consumer sciences, and nursing, as well as social work and other human services disciplines. The entries are written to be accessible to not only professionals, but also to policy makers and other potential consumers of applied developmental science scholarship. This includes young people and their parents, teachers, and counselors. Book Synopsis Risk and Resilience by : John G. Borkowski
Download or read book Risk and Resilience written by John G. Borkowski and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2007-03-20 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1984, a longitudinal study was launched at the University of Notre Dame to evaluate the social and psychological consequences of teenage parenting. Interwoven Lives: Adolescent Mothers and Their Children (2001) described, in detail, the development of these adolescent mothers and their children across the first eight years of life. Major delays were first noticed in children's patterns of attachment at age 1 and their IQ and personal adjustment scores at age 3. By age 8, school-related problems were found in 70% of the children. With these data as the backdrop, this companion volume, Risk and Resilience, identifies major risk factors associated with long-term developmental delays as well as the processes that led to resilience in some of the mothers and children. This new volume traces the children's development at ages 8, 10, and 14. The editors focus on identifying risk and protective factors associated with important life course trajectories as the mothers entered early adulthood and their children became adolescents. Relatively unexplored protective factors - such as religiosity, patterns of father involvement, and romantic relationships - were found to positively influence development for both teenage mothers and their children. This new text also addresses: New methodological approaches with an emphasis on the use of hierarchical linear and structural equation modeling and dynamical systems analyses Implications for prevention and intervention programs Intellectual, educational, and socioemotional outcome data The "dark side" of rearing children in poverty The multiple risks related to adolescent parenting and their profound impact on children's development How resilience emerges in children's lives and the specific factors that promote it. Risk and Resilience appeals to researchers in developmental psychology and family processes as well as agency and government professionals charged with public policy and service delivery.
Book Synopsis DARE to Say No by : Max Felker-Kantor
Download or read book DARE to Say No written by Max Felker-Kantor and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2024-02-14 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its signature "DARE to keep kids off drugs" slogan and iconic t-shirts, DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) was the most popular drug education program of the 1980s and 1990s. But behind the cultural phenomenon is the story of how DARE and other antidrug education programs brought the War on Drugs into schools and ensured that the velvet glove of antidrug education would be backed by the iron fist of rigorous policing and harsh sentencing. Max Felker-Kantor has assembled the first history of DARE, which began in Los Angeles in 1983 as a joint venture between the police department and the unified school district. By the mid-90s, it was taught in 75 percent of school districts across the United States. DARE received near-universal praise from parents, educators, police officers, and politicians and left an indelible stamp on many millennial memories. But the program had more nefarious ends, and Felker-Kantor complicates simplistic narratives of the War on Drugs. He shows how policing entered US schools and framed drug use as the result of personal responsibility, moral failure, and poor behavior deserving of punishment rather than something deeply rooted in state retrenchment, the abandonment of social service provisions, and structures of social and economic inequality.
