Book Synopsis Young and Foolish by : Alistair Fitchett
Download or read book Young and Foolish written by Alistair Fitchett and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autobiography/Cultural Studies. This book is a personal prayer at the altar of Pop. It's the story of the importance of Pop to the wildhearted outsider, and an attempt to record a history that has been largely ignored by the mainstream press. It's about not treating Pop as just sounds and songs, but more as personal connections and associations. It's about passion as opposed to fashion; possession as opposed to flirtation. Alistair's work reminds me of why I fell in love with pop music in the first place--Everett True. Fitchett currently designs and edits the e-zine Tangents, teaches Art & Design in a Devon high school, and DJs at the eclectic-minded Living Room and Glitch club events in Exeter.
Book Synopsis Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris by : Leanne Shapton
Download or read book Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris written by Leanne Shapton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lenore Doolan, a food writer for the New York Times, meets Harold Morris, a photographer, at a halloween party in 2002. He is dressed as Harry Houdini. In Leanne Shapton's marvellously inventive and invented auction catalogue, the 325 lots up for auction are what remain from the relationship between Lenore and Harold (who aren't real people, but might as well be). Through photographs of the couple's personal effects-the usual auction items (jewellery, fine art, and rare furniture) and the seemingly worthless (pyjamas, Post-it notes, worn paperbacks)-the story of a failed love affair vividly and cleverly emerges. From first meeting to final separation, the progress and rituals of intimacy are revealed through the couple's accumulated relics and memorabilia. And a love story, in all its tenderness and struggle, emerges from the evidence that has been left behind, laid out for us to appraise and appreciate. In Important Artifacts and Personal Property from the Collection of Lenore Doolan and Harold Morris Leanne Shapton invites us to contemplate what is truly valuable, and to consider the art we make of our private lives. This epub edition is optimized for use on the iPad, Kindle Fire, Kindle Paperwhite and the Nook

I admire the way it struts. I admire the way it preens. And did it hurt? Did it fuck. Come and meet Peacock Johnson, and ride with him on the craziest journey of your life as you travel across America in search of his ultimate fantasy: the hit record, the fame, the fortune. It's so close he can almost smell it. But a word of warning, don't fuck with Glasgow's own Rhinestone Cowboy, because nothing is going to stand in his way. Book Synopsis Literary Reading by : David S. Miall
Download or read book Literary Reading written by David S. Miall and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first major book in English on literary reading to be based on empirical methods. Moving the focus away from interpretation to the experience of literary texts, these studies demonstrate the role played by feeling in readers' responses, showing how feeling performs important functions during reading that cannot be accounted for by cognitive understanding. These studies not only reinvigorate the concept of literariness, they are also thoroughly interdisciplinary, offering a coherent approach to literary reading that draws on literary theory, psychology, neuropsychology, and evolutionary psychology. Several chapters help to introduce the empirical approach for students.

Download or read book Obiter Dicta written by Erick Verran and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2021-10-14 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stitched together over five years of journaling, Obiter Dicta is a commonplace book of freewheeling explorations representing the transcription of a dozen notebooks, since painstakingly reimagined for publication. Organized after Theodor Adorno's Minima Moralia, this unschooled exercise in aesthetic thought--gleefully dilettantish, oftentimes dangerously close to the epigrammatic--interrogates an array of subject matter (although inescapably circling back to the curiously resemblant histories of Western visual art and instrumental music) through the lens of drive-by speculation. Erick Verran's approach to philosophical inquiry follows the brute-force literary technique of Jacques Derrida to exhaustively favor the material grammar of a signifier over hand-me-down meaning, juxtaposing outer semblances with their buried systems and our etched-in-stone intuitions about color and illusion, shape and value, with lessons stolen from seemingly unrelatable disciplines. Interlarded with extracts of Ludwig Wittgenstein but also Wallace Stevens, Cormac McCarthy as well as Roland Barthes, this cache of incidental remarks eschews what's granular for the biggest picture available, leaving below the hyper-specialized fields of academia for a bird's-eye view of their crop circles. Obiter Dicta is an unapologetic experiment in intellectual dot-connecting that challenges much long-standing wisdom about everything from illuminated manuscripts to Minecraft and the evolution of European music with lyrical brevity; that is, before jumping to the next topic.
