Book excerpt: Excerpt from Injurious Insects and Useful Birds, Successful Control of Farm Pests This book has been written in the hope of supplying the needs of high school where Agriculture is taught, and of Agricultural Colleges which demand a good text-book that is not too technical, and where the work embraces a large field in which there is a call for practical information and suggestions. It is intended also to supply farmers, orchardists, vegetable growers, owners of gardens, and housekeepers with a reference book for guidance in a campaign against injurious insects and four-footed pests of the farm, and to assist them in obtaining information about some of our more common birds in their relation to agriculture. The widespread and growing interest in this latter group of animals is not to be disregarded. The suggestions contained herein are largely the results of twenty-one years of work in Economic Entomology on the part of the author. Yet in so large a field one must of necessity have recourse to much experience not his own, and the author has not hesitated to obtain desired information from many reliable publications; such as bulletins and circulars from the United States Department of Agriculture, bulletins from the Geneva and the Cornell stations, and from all sections of the country. Many illustrations are from Minnesota State publications. I have also been favored by the kindness of others who have loaned their cuts. Courtesies of this kind, which are hereby gratefully acknowledged, have been extended by the Bureau of Entomology, United States Department of Agriculture; P. J. Parrott, of the New York (Geneva) station; Dr. G. W. Herrick, of the Cornell station; the California station; Professor G. H. Dean, of Kansas; C.P. Gillette, of Colorado; R. A. Cooley, of Montana; W. C. O'Kane, of New Hampshire; H. A. Morgan, of Tennessee; W. E. Britton, of Connecticut; and the Ohio station. For figures 324 and 326 the author is indebted to the Country Gentleman. Some illustrations of spraying apparatus were obtained from the Barnes Company and the Goulds Manufacturing Company. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of Observations of Injurious Insects and Common Farm Pests During the Year 1886, Vol. 10: With Methods of Prevention and Remedy In the above mention of skilled assistance a portion does not bear on the present Report; but I have thought it a duty not only of courtesy, but to those who do me the honour to apply to me, to mention that for information as to such extra-british crop-attacks as it is requisite I should attend to, I am favoured with means of acquiring the requisite information. To the Agricultural Press I am greatly indebted for prompt and cordial cc-operation, and tender my best thanks. Many of the illustrations in the present Report have not previously appeared; some are drawn from life by myself, and some of the others are figures from Curtis's Farm Insects, ' for the use of which, as well as of those from the same work which have previously appeared, I offer my acknowledgments to Messrs. Blackie and Son, Glasgow. In the coming year any information regarding crop-pests, - and especially regarding Hessian Fly, - will be acceptable, including in this information as to its presence, specimens in any stage, information as to flax-seeds being found on imported straw, observations of attack at localities to which imported straw has been conveyed as fodder or bedding, or as litter or long manure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reports of Observations of Injurious Insects and Common Farm Pests: During the Year 1884, With Methods of Prevention and Remedy Before submitting the observations of the past season to the contributors to whose kind assistance I am indebted for the information, I beg to offer my best thanks for their courteous co-operation, and to request its continuance. I wish also to offer my thanks for the assistance cordially rendered by the press. It will be noticed that the observations have now been extended in some degree to insects affecting cattle and farm stock, and a slight corresponding alteration has been made in the title of the Report. During the eight years in which our crop insects have been reported on, such full observation has been sent in of some of the regular yearly attacks that it seems to leave but little more to say with regard to these; but there are some points which are shown constantly and plainly still to want attention as the very starting-points of a large part of our yearly attacks, and one of these is treatment of grass and clover-lea before breaking up. Half or more of the ravages of the Wireworm and Daddy Longlegs grubs arise from these being in the land before the new crop is put in, and any notes of treatment to prevent egg-laying, or of applications or treatment to destroy the grubs in breaking up the land, would be very acceptable, as tending to lessen one great source of loss. Warble Fly injury to our cattle, and Liver Fluke to our sheep, are two other important subjects. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations of Injurious Insects and Common Farm Pests: During the Year 1899, With Methods of Prevention and Remedy During the past season reports of observation of a great variety of insect infestations were forwarded, many of these being of our ordinary farm and orchard pests, but some also which had been little previously noticed, and of others details of habits, or of preventive measures, were contributed, serviceable for completing previous notices. The only crop attack, however, which was mentioned as seriously prevalent was that of Turnip Flea-beetle. The caterpillars of Cabbage Butter ies (as in the previous season) did a good deal of damage locally; and for about six to eight weeks from May 2oth much application was sent for lea ets on Wireworm, sometimes amounting to five or six applications daily. Some infestations which are often seriously injurious were little reported - as Surface Caterpillars to root crops; and Mangold-leaf Fly maggots; orchard caterpillars (including amongst them those of the Winter Moth) were little noticed the caterpillars of the Gooseberry and Currant Moth and Saw y were also little mentioned. Amongst field crop attacks, some addition to previous in formation was noted in regard to different kinds of Pear-shaped Weevils at Clover seed-heads. Amongst Corn attacks, some of the well-known kinds - as those of the maggots of Oat Frit Fly, Wheat-bulb Fly, and Corn Saw y within Wheat stems - were just enough reported to show they were not absent, as also Hessian Fly in Wheat in one locality, and I would most particularly desire to draw the attention of agriculturists (in case of this infestation occurring again in the country) to the notes given at p. 39, on the importance of destroying infested screenings with the contained chrysalids, the ao-called Flax seeds. With regard to insect infestation in our, whether as a generally spread home trouble in mills, &c., or in imports, the communications were on a much larger and graver scale than in any preceding year, and I have especially drawn attention to details connected with the Mediterranean Mill Moth in a paper under that heading, pp. 76 - 92. Amongst Hop observations a good working observation was given of possibility of broadscale trapping of the Click Beetles (the parents of the Wireworms); also notes of Hop Flea Beetle on the leafage, helped to give some additions needed to connect this attack in summer with that of the maggots later on in the Hop cones. Very little wasiv preface. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Insect Control The branch of Biological Science known generally as Economic Entomology has made enormous strides within the last ten or fifteen years. Its progress may be said to be an outcome of the greater attention that is being paid to Agricultural Science. Improved methods of transport have given the Agriculturist and Horticulturist a wider outlet for his produce, and the wheat fields of Manitoba and Illinois, the fruit orchards of California, Australia, and South Africa, the cattle ranches of Argentina and New Zealand, the cotton fields of Egypt and India, Uganda and Louisiana, have benefited accordingly. This wide distribution of food stuffs has brought about a corresponding increase in the range of injurious Insect pests, so that the adequate recognition of Economic Entomology and the scientific application of Insect Control measures are of increasing importance. In no branch of human knowledge, perhaps, has a more extensive literature accumulated in a shorter period of time. The literature concerning Economic Entomology has, in fact, become unwieldy, consisting as it does, to a large extent, of short articles or brief notes scattered throughout a wide range of scientific and technical journals, inaccessible very often to the average scientific man, and, as often as not, published in an unfamiliar language. Short abstracts of many such articles are published monthly in the Review of Applied Entomology, the Experimental Station Record, and the Monthly Bulletin of Agricultural Intelligence and Plant Diseases (Rome), but no attempt has as yet been made to put forward a digest, a general resume, of the progress of this branch of Science during the last twenty years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of Observations of Injurious Insects and Common Farm Pests: During the Year 1898, With Methods of Prevention and Remedy During the past season there has been more than usual variety in the amount and also in the kinds of insect infestations. In a few instances these have been more than usually numerous, in some less observed than is ordinarily the case; a few species that are very rarely noticed were reported, and also one or two observations of extension of locality of somewhat serious infesta tions have been given. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of Observations of Injurious Insects and Common Farm Pests, During the Year 1892: With Methods of Prevention and Remedy Tee year 1892 was remarkable for most of the insect infesta tions commonly injurious to field crops and fruit, being present to such an extent as to cause enquiry as to their nature and methods of prevention, but, for the most part, as not affecting large districts to a serious extent. Amongst such crop attacks as were more especially prevalent and injurious, were those of the leaf-eating Pea Weevils, of which the detailed reports Show amount Of damage up to the sweeping Off Of successive sowings and, over areas of various extent, up to serious mischief over a district of 1000 acres. The caterpillars Of the very common silver-y Moth caused unusual damage in various places to Clover; and the Hop Strig Maggot was again mischievous. Mangold crops in many places had (as has been repeatedly the case of late years) again to bear the brunt of sharp attack Of Leaf Maggot. Corn Aphis (so far as information sent in showed) was the most injurious corn insect attack Of the season. Diamond-back Moth presence was widely noticed, and in some localities (perhaps most of all on the north easterly parts of Norfolk, and near St. Andrew's, in Scotland) as being observable in great numbers but compared to the outbreak Of 1891 little caterpillar attack followed, so that serious damage only occurred locally, not as a widespread scourge. Various kinds of root attacks to Turnips and Cabbage (duly entered on) also caused trouble. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
