Book excerpt: Excerpt from Injurious and Beneficial, Insects of California Insect devastation costs the United States millions of dollars annu ally. California bears her full share, two millions being a reasonable estimate. Wise and timely application of well-known remedies would save much of this constant loss. Mr. E. O. Essig's signal success in the discovery and practice of control measures pointed him out as one fit to instruct the public as to the life histories of insects and the best methods to control their attacks. This led to the publication by the State Commission of Horticulture two years ago of Injurious and Beneficial Insects of California. Anticipating a great demand for the book, a very large edition was issued. These anticipa tions were greatly exceeded, and very soon, the edition was wholly exhausted. Commendation of the work was most hearty and reached the Commission from all countries, far and near. The call for another edition was loud and general. The Commission is greatly pleased to heed this request in the present enlarged and improved edition, which it feels sure will be very heartily welcomed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects Injurious to Fruits It has been the aim of the author of this work to bring together all the important facts relating to insects known to be injurious to fruits in all parts of Canada and the United States, to add to the information thus obtained the knowl edge he has acquired of the habits and life-history of many of our insect pests by an experience of over twenty years as a fruit-grower and a student of entomology, and to pre sent the results in as concise and plain a manner as possible, avoiding all scientific phraseology except such as is necessary to accuracy. The arrangement adopted under the several headings, by which the insect pests which attack the different parts of the tree or vine under consideration are grouped together, will, it is hoped, with the aid of the illustrations, greatly facilitate the determination of any injurious species. When having before him its history briefly traced and the remedies which have been found most useful in subduing the insect, the reader will at once be enabled to decide as to the best meth ods to be employed. The author desires to make the fullest acknowledgment to those of whose work he has availed himself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Injurious Insects and Useful Birds, Successful Control of Farm Pests This book has been written in the hope of supplying the needs of high school where Agriculture is taught, and of Agricultural Colleges which demand a good text-book that is not too technical, and where the work embraces a large field in which there is a call for practical information and suggestions. It is intended also to supply farmers, orchardists, vegetable growers, owners of gardens, and housekeepers with a reference book for guidance in a campaign against injurious insects and four-footed pests of the farm, and to assist them in obtaining information about some of our more common birds in their relation to agriculture. The widespread and growing interest in this latter group of animals is not to be disregarded. The suggestions contained herein are largely the results of twenty-one years of work in Economic Entomology on the part of the author. Yet in so large a field one must of necessity have recourse to much experience not his own, and the author has not hesitated to obtain desired information from many reliable publications; such as bulletins and circulars from the United States Department of Agriculture, bulletins from the Geneva and the Cornell stations, and from all sections of the country. Many illustrations are from Minnesota State publications. I have also been favored by the kindness of others who have loaned their cuts. Courtesies of this kind, which are hereby gratefully acknowledged, have been extended by the Bureau of Entomology, United States Department of Agriculture; P. J. Parrott, of the New York (Geneva) station; Dr. G. W. Herrick, of the Cornell station; the California station; Professor G. H. Dean, of Kansas; C.P. Gillette, of Colorado; R. A. Cooley, of Montana; W. C. O'Kane, of New Hampshire; H. A. Morgan, of Tennessee; W. E. Britton, of Connecticut; and the Ohio station. For figures 324 and 326 the author is indebted to the Country Gentleman. Some illustrations of spraying apparatus were obtained from the Barnes Company and the Goulds Manufacturing Company. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects Injurious to the Household and Annoying to Man The present work is not intended as a treatise on the relation of insects to disease. The author's colleagues are now at work on a thorough and extended discussion of that phase of the subject. In the following pages, the writer devotes the principal part of the discussion to the habits, injuries, and control of insects simply as pests of the household and of man, contenting himself with a brief summary of the relation of insects to disease. It is hardly to be expected that SO brief a work will include all of the insect pests that may invade the household but an attempt has been made to discuss, at least, the most important ones with which our present knowledge makes us more or less familiar. The erroneous ideas and unnecessary fears prevalent regarding the poisonous nature Of certain insects and their near relatives and the interest evinced in this matter have seemed to warrant the addition of a chapter on this subject. In this discussion, the author has at tempted to state the Simple truth and to clear away, as far as existing knowledge makes it possible, the hazy and almost superstitious notions regarding the venomous qualities of these small animals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Some of the Insects Injurious to Vegetation Most insects, in the course of their lives, are subject to very great changes of form, attended by equally remarkable changes in their habits and propensities. These changes, transformations, or metamorphoses, as they are called, might cause the same insect, at different ages, to be mistaken for as manv different animals. For example, a caterpillar, after feeding upon leaves till it is fully grown, retires into some place of concealment, casts off its caterpillar-skin, and pre sents itself in an entirely different form, one wherein it has neither the power of moving about, nor of taking food; in fact, in this its second or chrysalis state, the insect seems to be a lifeless oblong oval or conical body, without a distinct head, or movable limbs; after resting awhile, an inward struggle begins, the chrysalis-skin bursts Open, and from the rent issues a butter y or a moth, whose small and abby wings soon extend and harden, and become fitted to bear away the insect in search of the honeyed juice of owers and other liquids that suffice for its nourishment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Injurious Insects and the Use of Insecticides: A New Descriptive Manual on Noxious Insects, With Methods for Their Repression Scarcely twenty years ago the best farmers paid little attention to insect depredations. Such losses were regarded as of no significance, or as a part of the ordinary risks of farming. They were looked upon as occasional but inevitable evils which it was nobody's business to try to prevent. In the early Seventies when Dr. Riley and a few other scientists were laboring to overcome popular prejudice against the use of Paris green, in fighting the Colorado Potato-beetle, agriculturists, as a class, were indifferent and inactive until brought to their senses by serious losses or by the complete destruction of crops. But we have learned better since those times. To-day it is only the thriftless farmer who insists on growing crops to be eaten up by insects. These accounts, however, are distributed through government and state publications, reports of agricultural so cieties, magazines, and periodical publications of. Entomological societies, and even the daily press. As an example of the number of such publications on American economic ento mology, the Bureau of Entomology, United States Department of Agriculture, has cited no less than titles that had appeared to January I, 1905, and the number of references to noxious insects is about The average farmer has neither time nor Opportunity to consult a tithe of these 12, 000 odd works, and it is therefore the object of the follow ing pages to collate concise accounts of the principal insects which affect one class of crops - vegetables. The order which will be followed is, as far as practicable, alphabetical, begin ning with the insect enemies of asparagus, and ending with those which affect sweet potato, and finally miscellaneous or unclassified crops.
