Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The manuscripts produced and kept at the great English Benedictine house of St Albans between the Norman conquest and the floruit of its notable historian Matthew Paris, about the middle of the thirteenth century, are of remarkable quality. Students of monastic art and culture have often commented on St Albans' patronage of fine books during the twelfth century and later, but there has not until now been a comprehensive and detailed study of how this patronage was organised. This study focuses on the sixty-five manuscripts produced both at and for the abbey during the period, but it also takes into account manuscripts owned by the abbey's dependant cells, and those which it seems to have produced for other patrons - the latter including famous examples of Romanesque manuscript illumination. The development of "house styles" in script and decoration is traced, and so are the travels of the professional artists responsible for the adornment of de luxe books ordered by this and other houses in England and overseas; and last but not least, the St Albans books are related to the abbey's intellectual and religious life, and to the monastic contribution to the twelfth century renaissance. RODNEY M. THOMSON is Emeritus Professor of History, University of Tasmania.

Book excerpt: "Treasures of a Lost Art presents 144 leaves, cuttings, and illuminated manuscript fragments from the collection of Robert Lehman (1891-1969), one of the largest and most impressive private holdings of Italian manuscripts assembled after the First World War. Discussed here - with many of them handsomely illustrated in full color - are important examples of the major schools of illumination in southern Italy, Umbria, Tuscany, Emilia, Lombardy, and the Veneto. Previously unpublished, and perhaps even unknown to scholars, are works by some of the foremost Italian painters of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, including a leaf here attributed for the first time to the Sienese master Duccio di Buoninsegna and cuttings by Stefano da Verona and Cosimo Tura. Lesser-known arists, such as Neri da Rimini, Belbello da Pavia, and Girolamo da Cremona, once renowned for their beautifully illuminated volumes, are also discussed in full."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This masterwork is the most comprehensive analysis of John Dee's Angelical language ever undertaken. Most Enochian dictionaries merely present word lists--this encyclopedic textbook presents a wealth of original material and expands upon (and corrects) previously published information. It is designed so readers can actually learn the language and use it in their own magick. For the first time ever, every Angelical word recorded in Dee's books, journals, and personal grimoire is recorded and cross-referenced in a number of helpful ways, allowing the reader to recognize root words, alternate spellings, and more. The Angelical Language, Volume II includes notes about each word's definition, history, or usage--both Dee's original marginal notations and new commentary by the author. Also presented are Dee's own phonetic notations, as well as a brand-new pronunciation key designed to make it easier to speak the language. The material within these pages is based strictly upon Dee's journals and personal grimoire. There are no inclusions from later mystics or organizations. This reference work, along with its companion guide, The Angelical Language, Volume I: The Complete History and Mythos of the Tongue of Angels, is the authoritative guide to the celestial language in its purest form. Praise: "The Angelical Language is the single-most comprehensive text ever written on the subject of the Enochian magical system and language of Elizabethan luminary Dr. John Dee. This two-volume magnum opus demonstrates Aaron Leitch's familiarity with practical magic as well as his skill as a meticulous researcher. A must-have book."--Chic Cicero and Sandra Tabatha Cicero, Chief Adepts of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn
