Book excerpt: Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor [L.] Moench) production in many areas of the world is reduced due to damage caused by sorghum midge (Stenodiplosis sorghicola). There are several methods of control to reduce losses due to sorghum midge, which include cultural practices, biological control, chemical control and resistant cultivars. The best long-term solution for sorghum midge control is the use of genetic resistance in cultivars and hybrids. Recently, sorghum midge resistant hybrids have been developed by several sorghum breeding programs, but there is limited information about agronomic performance relative to planting dates compared to susceptible standards. Thus, the objectives of this research project are: (1) to evaluate the value of sorghum midge resistant sorghum hybrids in the USA production system, (2) to confirm the presence of sorghum midge insect resistance in sorghum hybrids, and (3) to determine whether the resistance in eighteen sorghum hybrids is stable across two environments in Texas where sorghum midge is a damaging pest. Sorghum hybrids with different levels of resistance to sorghum midge were evaluated at College Station and Corpus Christi, Texas in 2003 and 2004, using two different planting dates and the presence or absence of an insecticide treatment. Agronomic data, sorghum midge incidence ratings and number of adult midges, were determined for all entries. All entries designated as resistant did have some resistance compared to susceptible checks. Across all hybrids, grain yield was higher in sorghum with normal planting dates compared to late planting. Under midge pressure resistant hybrids performed better than susceptible hybrids, but lacking midge pressure the susceptible hybrids were higher performing. The use of midge resistant hybrids in commercial production is only warranted when producers are reasonably sure that midge will be a problem. Otherwise, they should continue to plant early using traditional hybrids.

This book was released on 1970 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grain sorghum is an increasingly important food crop. Approximately 30 million tons are produced annually. The sorghum midge (Contarinia sorghicola) destroys up to 90 percent of a given sorghum crop. Since the use of resistant sorghums has received little attention, previous gains in this area of control have been meager. This study was designed to evaluate the preference mechanism of resistance in 10 selected lines of grain sorghum, which varied in degree of resistance. In addition, data on overwintering midges and parasitism were collected.

Book Synopsis Plant Resistance to Insects in Sorghum by : H.C. Sharma
Download or read book Plant Resistance to Insects in Sorghum written by H.C. Sharma and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sorghum is one of the most important cereals in the semi-arid tropics. Nearly 150 insect species have been reported to damage the crop worldwide, causing an estimated loss of over U$1000 million annually. Of these, shoot fly, stem borers, greenbug, sugarcane aphid, shoot bug, spider, mites, armysorms, midge, head bug, and head caterpillars are the major pests. Plant resistance to insects is one of the most important components of pest management in sorghum. Thus, the 18 specialist scientists who have contributed the 25 papers included in the book, that is based on a training course for researchers involved in the development of insect-resistant cultivars for integrated pest management in sustainable agriculture, describe and discuss the theoretical and practical aspects of resistance-screening techniques, mechanisms and inheritance of resistance, breeding for resistance, statistical designs, and strategies for integrated pest management. Information has also been provided about the international sorghum insect resistance testing program and the role of networks in collaborative research and technology exchange.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breeding Sorghum for Diverse End Uses is a comprehensive overview of all significant global efforts for the genetic improvement of sorghum, a major crop of many semi-arid nations that is suitable for a huge range of uses, from human food, to biofuels. Split into two main sections, the book initially reviews the genetic suitability of sorghum for breeding, also providing the history of the genetic improvement of the grain. Finally, other sections look at specific breeding programs that could be improved in a number of areas, including human food, animal feed and industrial usage. Readers in academics, research, plant genetics and sorghum development will find this resource of great value. In addition, it is essential reading for engineers who utilize sorghum for food, feed and industrial materials in industry. Provides information on key advances in the genetic makeup of sorghum Allows plant breeders to apply this research to effectively breed new strains of sorghum that are dependent on final usage goals Includes the latest findings in each section to orient researchers to plans for future genetic enhancement
