The application of the data is restricted to conditions within 10% of 1 atmosphere pressure and a temperature of 296 K if a transmission accuracy of 2% is to be maintained.

Book excerpt: The Real-Time Nephanalysis (RTNE PH) generates real-time global analysis of cloud extent, base, height, and type. The RTNE PH makes extensive use of satellite data that are measured in the 10-12 micron infrared (IR) window for thermal mapping of clouds and the earth's surface both day and night. Water vapor absorption effects are significant in such data, especially for high viewing angles and tropical atmospheres where water vapor concentrations are generally high. Water vapor attenuates the emitted ground radiance, reducing its magnitude and with it the apparent temperature of the surface being viewed. Currently, the RTNEPH takes into account such attenuation losses using lookup tables that are functions of viewing geometry, time of day, type of background, and the like. However, these corrections have limited value and leave room for significant improvement. This report outlines and presents two new techniques that are expected to enhance the attenuation correction capabilities of the RTNEPH, multivariate polynomial regression (the Weinreb technique) and the correlated K method.

Book excerpt: The infrared absorption of water vapor was calculated over a wide range of path length, pressure, and temperature from 1/1000 cm to 1/10,000 cm. The results are presented in extensive tables which give the transmission over intervals of 1/5 cm at wave numbers below 1/3400 cm. The transmission over intervals of 20, 50, and 1/100 cm is given over the complete frequency range. The calculated data representing the intensity, position, and number of spectral lines in a given frequency interval is tabulated in a form which is useful for transmission calculations. All lines from all isotopic species having an intensity greater than 10 to the -8th power of the strongest line in an absorption region were included in the calculation. The quasi-random model for the representation of band spectra is discussed in detail. Among its features are the possibility of representing the absorption by a series of lines which are arranged neither at random nor in a regular way. (Author).

Spectral data are reviewed for water vapor, steam and liquid water. The infrared continuum absorption is discussed in detail and is shown to be explicable on the basis of homogeneous or ion-induced cluster distributions in water vapor, where the cluster population is approximately proportional to the square of the partial water vapor pressure. Thermodynamic consistency between the vapor and liquid phases is discussed for temperatures including the critical (374 C) where the phases become one. Simple oscillator models are shown to give agreement with observed spectral lines, suggesting certain cluster configurations. The ion concentration of moist air versus temperature is discussed, and measurements of ion cluster distributions are considered. Cluster absorption at longer wavelengths including the microwave region is discussed. Conclusions are presented.

Book excerpt: Described are the results of a laboratory study of the weak water-continuum absorption within the 8- to 12-micrometer atmospheric transmission window. The highly sensitive photoacoustic detection technique was used in conjunction with a line-tunable CO2 laser to measure water continuum absorption throughout the CO2 laser 10.4-micrometer band. These measurements were performed over a range of atmospheric temperatures and water pressures important to the attenuation of radiation for long-slant atmospheric transmission paths. Water continuum CO2 laser absorption spectra are reported for temperatures between 27 and -10 deg C. Below room temperature, spectra of this type have not been determined previously. The water continuum absorption was found to possess a negative temperature dependence between 27 and -10 deg C that is similar to that observed between 100 and 27 deg C by previous investigators. The temperature, pressure, and wavelength dependences observed for the 8- to 12-micrometer water continuum in this study, and in previous studies reviewed thoroughly here, are best modeled by assuming simultaneous contributions of water-dimer and collisional-broadening mechanisms to the continuum. At room temperature and below, the water dimer mechanism becomes more important than the collisional-broadening mechanism.

It enables the study of fundamental parameters and processes and is also used for the sounding of gas media through optical techniques. It has been facing always renewed challenges, due to the considerable improvement of experimental techniques and the increasing demand for accuracy and scope of remote sensing applications. In practice, the radiating molecule is usually not isolated but diluted in a mixture at significant total pressure. The collisions among the molecules composing the gas can have a large influence on the spectral shape, affecting all wavelength regions through various mechanisms. These must be taken into account for the correct analysis and prediction of the resulting spectra. This book reviews our current experimental and theoretical knowledge and the practical consequences of collisional effects on molecular spectral shapes in neutral gases. General expressions are first given. They are formal of difficult use for practical calculations often but enable discussion of the approximations leading to simplified situations. The first case examined is that of isolated transitions, with the usual pressure broadening and shifting but also refined effects due to speed dependence and collision-induced velocity changes. Collisional line-mixing, which invalidates the notion of isolated transitions and has spectral consequences when lines are closely spaced, is then discussed within the impact approximation. Regions where the contributions of many distant lines overlap, such as troughs between transitions and band wings, are considered next. For a description of these far wings the finite duration of collisions and concomitant breakdown of the impact approximation must be taken into account. Finally, for long paths or elevated pressures, the dipole or polarizability induced by intermolecular interactions can make significant contributions. Specific models for the description of these collision induced absorption and light scattering processes are presented. The above mentioned topics are reviewed and discussed from a threefold point of view: the various models, the available data, and the consequences for applications including heat transfer, remote sensing and optical sounding.
