Book Synopsis Of Light and Struggle by : Debbie Sharnak
Download or read book Of Light and Struggle written by Debbie Sharnak and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2023-06-20 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the country's dictatorship from 1973 to 1985, Uruguayans suffered under crushing repression, which included the highest rate of political incarceration in the world. In Of Light and Struggle, Debbie Sharnak explores how activists, transnational social movements, and international policymakers collaborated and clashed in response to this era and during the country's transition back to democratic rule. At the heart of the book is an examination of how the language and politics of human rights shifted over time as a result of conflict and convergence between local, national, and global dynamics. Sharnak examines the utility and limits of human rights language used by international NGOs, such as Amnesty International, and foreign governments, such as the Carter administration. She does so by exploring tensions between their responses to the dictatorship's violations and the grassroots struggle for socioeconomic rights as well as new social movements around issues of race, gender, religion, and sexuality in Uruguay. Sharnak exposes how international activists used human rights language to combat repression in foreign countries, how local politicians, unionists, and students articulated more expansive social justice visions, how the military attempted to coopt human rights language for its own purposes, and how broader debates about human rights transformed the fight over citizenship in renewed democratic societies. By exploring the interplay between debates taking place in activists' living rooms, presidential administrations, and international halls of power, Sharnak uncovers the messy and contingent process through which human rights became a powerful discourse for social change, and thus contributes to a new method for exploring the history of human rights. By looking at this pivotal period in international history, Of Light and Struggle suggests that discussions around the small country on the Río de la Plata had global implications for the possibilities and constraints of human rights well beyond Uruguay's shores.

Download or read book The Origins and Development of Psychology written by Kurt Pawlik and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychological science is worldwide, but it originated earlier in some countries and regions than in others, and the course of development has differed among countries and regions. Psychology has also interacted with quite different cultural backgrounds in different regions of the world. The special issue of the International Journal of Psychology contains seven papers that treat the origins and development of psychology in most of the regions of the world. It includes countries and regions where psychology has a long history and has attained major status and also developing countries where psychology is more recent and is less well established. It includes papers on countries of European culture and also countries where psychology interacts with the background of Asian and Latin American cultures. The authors of the papers, all well known internationally, are all present or past members of the Executive Committee of the International Union of Psychological Science and so are well acquainted with world psychology and psychology in countries besides their own. All of the authors have done research in other countries than their own and so can place the development of psychology in their own regions within the context of world psychology. These contributions show both the common features of psychological science around the world and also the special problems and special opportunities of psychology in different regional and cultural settings.

Book Synopsis Human remains and identification by : Jean-Marc Dreyfus
Download or read book Human remains and identification written by Jean-Marc Dreyfus and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. Human remains and identification presents a pioneering investigation into the practices and methodologies used in the search for and exhumation of dead bodies resulting from mass violence. Previously absent from forensic debate, social scientists and historians here confront historical and contemporary exhumations with the application of social context to create an innovative and interdisciplinary dialogue, enlightening the political, social and legal aspects of mass crime and its aftermaths. Through a ground-breaking selection of international case studies, Human remains and identification argues that the emergence of new technologies to facilitate the identification of dead bodies has led to a "forensic turn", normalising exhumations as a method of dealing with human remains en masse. However, are these exhumations always made for legitimate reasons? Multidisciplinary in scope, this book will appeal to readers interested in understanding this crucial phase of mass violence's aftermath, including researchers in history, anthropology, sociology, forensic science, law, politics and modern warfare. The research program leading to this publication has received funding from the European Research Council under the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme (FP/2007-2013) / ERC Grant Agreement n° 283-617.
