Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s academic revolution is unprecedented. Mass higher education has become a worldwide phenomenon, with enrollments growing from 100 million to 150 million in just a decade. The implications of massification are immense—greatly increased participation for a more diverse population including women and many traditionally underrepresented socio-economic groups; the rise of private higher education; diversification of academic institutions and systems; and an overall weakening of academic standards at non-elite institutions in many countries. At the same time, higher education is recognized as a key driver of the new knowledge economy. Because of this research universities, at the top of academic systems, have become central institutions in contemporary society. Trends in Global Higher Education analyses these and other key forces shaping higher education today. Using up-to-date UNESCO statistics, trends defining higher education are placed in a comparative and international framework. Patterns of globalization, the flow of students and scholars across borders, the impact of information technology, and other key forces are critically assessed. This book is a key resource for understanding the present and future of global higher education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Open Access book analyses the interplay between governing, evaluation and knowledge with an empirical focus on Swedish higher education. It investigates the origins, logics, and mechanisms of evaluation and quality assurance reforms and their dynamic interactions with institutional, national and European policy contexts. The chapters report findings from extensive empirical studies that offer detailed insight into the work of governing in higher education, by giving voice to actors at various levels and positions including the ministry, national agency and University employees. Central themes include the influence of European policy, changing system designs, media relations and quality assurance enactments in University institutions. The book also explores the ways in which an emerging professional cadre, labelled qualocrats, enacts and mediates evaluation and quality assurance policy and practice. Taken together, the expanding evaluation machinery in Swedish higher education highlights the pivotal role of knowledge as a governing resource, and points to special features of evaluation as a particular form of practice that makes knowledge work for governing.

Book excerpt: The report contains information on the educational system of Sweden, primarily to assist U.S. institutions in the placement and credit transfer of Swedish students. An introductory chapter provides background information on the country, its population, its government, Nordic cooperation, and an overview of the educational system. Chapter 2 outlines the preschool, elementary, and lower secondary systems. Chapter 3, devoted to the secondary education system, describes the overall program, grading, school leaving qualifications, and the design of the two-year and three-year curricula in different academic and vocational disciplines. Chapter 4 details the higher education system, with some historical information and descriptions of financing, admission, college entrance examinations, academic year, degree program types, professional and graduate study, student records, and changes in credentials awarded since a reform movement in 1993. Content and organization of different disciplines' programs are specified in Chapter 5, and teacher education is the focus of Chapter 6. Separate chapters address forms of nontraditional education, international programs and study abroad, and guidelines for U.S. admissions officers concerning evaluation of credentials and student placement. Appended materials include institution profiles, a list of Swedish agencies, notes on the National Council on the Evaluation of Foreign Educational Credentials, and a Swedish-English glossary. Contents are indexed. (MSE)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An evaluation of experimental distance courses offered by Swedish universities beginning in the academic year 1974-75, this study gathered data through questionnaires and interviews with teachers and administrators responsible for the courses (N=120), as well as questionnaires distributed to students at the beginning of the first term and the end of the second term. These provided background data and information on the students' work situations, study motives, planned and actual amount of time for study, study breaks and other problems, use of special teaching aids, and attitudes toward different components of the teaching program. Main findings include a very high degree of satisfaction among the participants (N=797) and relatively high pass rates, even though the majority of the participants worked full time while they were taking courses. A follow-up study of the students (N=571), which was conducted five years after they started, indicates that the work situation is very stable for men, though women change work frequently; interest in continuing education remains very high, with 80% of the group involved in some other kind of studies during the 5-year period; and the group is very flexible in their choice of educational organization. A discussion of the decentralized Swedish model in relation to other systems and the international debate on distance education models concludes the report. A 17-page reference list including a number of sources in English as well as Swedish, data collection instruments, and a list of related reports are included. (Author/LMM)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how the notion of the responsible university manifests itself at various levels within Nordic higher education. As the impetus of the knowledge society has catapulted the higher education sector to the forefront of policy agendas, universities and other types of higher education institutions face increasing scrutiny, assessment and accountability. This book examines this phenomenon using the Nordic countries as cases in point, given the strong public commitment towards widening participation and public research investments. The editors and contributors analyse the history and current transformations of the idea of the responsible university, investigate new innovations in the educational landscape and look into how universities have begun to organise themselves to become more responsible. Drawing together scholars from the humanities and the social sciences, this interdisciplinary collection will be of interest and value to students and scholars of the role and nature of the modern university, in addition to practitioners and policy makers tasked with finding solutions to address the competing and often contradictory demands posed by a responsibility agenda. .
