Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive survey of 50 of the most influential designers, ranging from early celebrity designers such as Paul Poiret to current cutting edge designers such as Hussein Chalayan. The names chosen are there because they have had an extraordinarily powerful influence on fashion and collectively they are responsible for almost the whole fashion story of the last 100 years. Each designer's iconic creations are shown in detail, and graphic timelines and cross references show not only why these pieces were extraordinary in their own time, but why they are still influencing designers today. The timelines demonstrate design influence through the generations. The result is a fascinating look at the fashion world that will appeal to anyone interested in fashion as well as being a useful resource for all fashion students.

Puech proposed the question of the indebtedness of patristic eloquence to the contemporary sophistic in the Revue de synthèse historique for June 1901, three dissertations have been published bearing directly on phases of that ample problem. M. Méridier has studied the influence of the Second Sophistic upon St. Gregory of Nyssa; Guignet has studied St. Gregory of Nazianzus in his contacts with the contemporary rhetoric; Father Ameringer, out of the vast bulk of St. John Chrysostom, has traced the sophistic influence on the style of the panegyrical sermons of that orator. The following study aims to furnish such a paragraph in answer to M. Puech’s question as will result from a careful study of the style of the 46 sermons of St. Basil that are found in the Benedictine edition.

Book excerpt: Humanity is accustomed to feeling mature; despite the fact that compared to geomorphological age it is far from it, to put it mildly. Based on this comparison, we can conclude that we are still in childhood state. Maybe to some extent it is due to this that the current level of sensible activity of a human is not free from many natural laws, which often get ignored by theories of knowledge. Through understanding of what a "symbol" is, of its history, cultural application—it is possible to conclude that the influence of psychophysiological specifics of an individual on the style of decision-making mainly depends on the interaction of his individual archetypal complex with the environment. And, this requires efforts of philosophical, culturological, psychological, and other scientific directions in a single, synergistic approach to the problem of individuality. German physicist Hermann Haken proposed the term "synergy" to describe the aggregate, collective effect of interaction of a large number of subsystems, which lead to formation of stable structures and self-organization in complex systems. Originating from non-equilibrium thermodynamics, synthesis of knowledge of natural sciences, synergy orients on the disclosure of mechanisms of self-organization of complex systems—natural and social, as well as those created by human hands. Together with synergy came the understanding of unity of inorganic and organic world, understanding that alternation of chaos and order is a universal principle of world order. According to academician N. Moiseyev: "everything we observe, all that we are involved in today are only fragments of a single synergistic process..." The perspective that society is a social machine that operates according to "objective laws" is a pre-synergistic perspective. Modern natural sciences, science in general, and social life force to learn new synergistic tools of thought. Most likely, the approach to the problem of influence of an individual on the environment through understanding that this influence depends mostly on personal parameters, decryption of which requires joint efforts of various scientific directions—the approach is synergistic. This might allow to more clearly indicate the place of a modern human in the emerging informational society and to identify correlates of an individual and the social environment.

Book excerpt: First Published in 2002. It is easy to see that we are living in a time of rapid and radical social change. It is much less easy to grasp the fact that such change will inevitably affect the nature of those disciplines that both reflect our society and help to shape it. Yet this is nowhere more apparent than in the central field of what may, in general terms, be called literary studies. ‘New Accents’ is intended as a positive response to the initiative offered by such a situation. Each volume in the series will seek to encourage rather than resist the process of change. To stretch rather than reinforce the boundaries that currently define literature and its academic study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years after her death, Marilyn remains an incandescent movie star, legendary sex symbol, and a woman whose private life fascinates the public—but the story never before showcased is Marilyn Monroe's enduring impact on fashion. From the pink satin “Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend” gown, to the pleated white dress from The Seven Year Itch to the revealing nude sheath worn to sing “Happy Birthday” to JFK, Marilyn created endless unforgettable looks. Before they were household names, she wore Ferragamo pumps, carried Gucci bags and wore the designs of Oleg Cassini, Norman Norell, Emilio Pucci and Jean Louis. In an era of Peter Pan collars, poodle skirts, and repressed sexuality, Marilyn's sexy style and ability to spot up-and-coming designers made her a fashion visionary. Marilyn in Fashion traces the evolution of her style, from wholesome sweetness early in her career, to sex kitten looks in the ‘50s, to elegant sophistication in the last years of her life. The text details the designers of her ensembles, where she wore them, and their influence on fashion. Behind-the-scenes stories reveal how the star often worked closely with designers to create looks befitting the Marilyn Monroe image. Illustrated with hundreds of rare and never-before-published photos, Marilyn in Fashion fabulously traces the style evolution of the ultimate Hollywood icon.
