Abstract: TITLE: Influences on Students' Achievements in Learning English as a Second Language NAME: Fung Tak Ying, Dora ABSTRACT: This study sets out to investigate the impact of different influences on two groups of Secondary 1 and Secondary 4 students studying English as a Second Language in a secondary school in Hong Kong. A preliminary round of data collection with a small number of students was used to determine the focus of the influences. A questionnaire was then used with all the S.1 and S.4 students in the school. Individual interviews were also used to collect more detailed data. The results of the study show that the influences affecting students' achievement were: motivation, attitude, home support, interest and self-efficacy/ social comparison. A comparison of the data relating the high- and low- achievers from each group shows that the influences had different impacts on high- and low-achievers. Based on the findings, recommendations are made about how teachers and parents (and the students themselves) can help students achieve better outcomes in learning English, and serves as a background for researchers to carry out related studies in other similar schools to help students with similar or different needs. Book excerpt: Educating dual language learners (DLLs) and English learners (ELs) effectively is a national challenge with consequences both for individuals and for American society. Despite their linguistic, cognitive, and social potential, many ELsâ€"who account for more than 9 percent of enrollment in grades K-12 in U.S. schoolsâ€"are struggling to meet the requirements for academic success, and their prospects for success in postsecondary education and in the workforce are jeopardized as a result. Promoting the Educational Success of Children and Youth Learning English: Promising Futures examines how evidence based on research relevant to the development of DLLs/ELs from birth to age 21 can inform education and health policies and related practices that can result in better educational outcomes. This report makes recommendations for policy, practice, and research and data collection focused on addressing the challenges in caring for and educating DLLs/ELs from birth to grade 12.

Research on students in kindergarten to grade 12 is reviewed. The primary chapters of the book focus on these students' acquisition of oral language skills in English, their development of literacy (reading & writing) skills in English, instructional issues in teaching literacy, and achievement in academic domains (i.e., mathematics, science, and reading). The reviews and analyses of the research are relatively technical with a focus on research quality, design characteristics, and statistical analyses. The book provides a set of summary tables that give details about each study, including full references, characteristics of the students in the research, assessment tools and procedures, and results. A concluding chapter summarizes the major issues discussed and makes recommendations about particular areas that need further research.

Book excerpt: This research project focused on conducting an analysis of home factors that may influence language development and academic achievement among simultaneous English language learners (ELLs). Multiple sources of data were gathered for eight second-grade students from a small private school. Qualitative measures of data included home language surveys and interviews with select parents. Quantitative measures of data included students' grades, test scores, and writing samples. The results of this study confirmed some existing research findings that parent education, parent involvement, and applied use of literacy materials in the home are associated with high academic achievement. Data from this present study also revealed a possible association between how reading and writing is modeled in the home and the level of students' enjoyment and frequency of engaging in these types of activities. There also appeared to be a distinct pattern among simultaneous ELLs in which parents reported a decline in motivation and language fluency of the simultaneous ELLs' heritage language spoken at home. The findings from this present study certainly raise questions regarding simultaneous language acquisition and whether this form of language learning is advantageous for students. This research study presents valuable information for both parents and educators concerning the impact of a simultaneous ELL's home environment on their language development and academic performance. Furthermore, the results from this study have broader implications for challenging current second language acquisition theories and modifying current teaching approaches.

Book excerpt: Attitude, Self-efficacy and English communication skills become an integral part to provide appropriate careers to students. Learners suffer from low self-efficacy which is an impediment in their involvement in learning tasks. Poor learning strategies diminish their motivation and consequently their language proficiency. It has been proved that self-efficacy is used an instrument to amplify positive attitude among learners towards English Communication Skills. There is a positive relationship among the attitude, self-efficacy and English language achievement of learners. It provides a framework to understand communication practices of engineering students in India. This book aims to help the language practitioners and educators to look for concrete ways to assist learners to develop a positive attitude and learn more effectively by empowering them to take ownership of learning and to manage their own learning.

Book excerpt: Teacher Motivation: Theory and Practice provides a much needed introduction to the current status and future directions of theory and research on teacher motivation. Although there is a robust literature covering the theory and research on student motivation, until recently there has been comparatively little attention paid to teachers. This volume draws together a decade of work from psychological theorists and researchers interested in what motivates people to choose teaching as a career, what motivates them as they work with students in classrooms, the impact of intrinsic and extrinsic forces on career experiences, and how their motivational profiles vary at different stages of their career. With chapters from leading experts on the topic, this volume provides a critical resource not only for educational psychologists, but also for those working in related fields such as educational leadership, teacher development, policy makers and school psychology.

Book excerpt: This book demonstrates how foreign language self-esteem (FLSE) affects foreign language (L2) learning and teaching, and how it fluctuates with growing proficiency. Further, it explains the interaction between FLSE and a range of factors of recognized importance in second language acquisition (SLA). The theoretical part of the book presents the main pillars of self-esteem as well as its notable influence on psychological functioning and learning, with special emphasis being placed on L2 learning. In turn, the empirical part presents the findings of a study that explored the trajectory and behavioural outcomes of FLSE across three stages of education. The book closes by outlining future research directions, as well as some pedagogical implications. In particular, the findings of the study can be employed in teaching English as a foreign or second language by helping instructors understand the significance of learners’ individual differences.

Book excerpt: This book highlights the importance of individual learner differences in learning English as a foreign language and reports the findings of a study which investigated the impact of two personality traits, which are, openness to experience and ambiguity tolerance, on target language attainment among Polish secondary school students. The book provides an exhaustive overview of the theoretical issues and existing research related to personality, emphasizing the two traits under investigation, openness, and ambiguity tolerance, which are the focus of the empirical study reported later in the book. The empirical investigation explored relationships between openness to experience and ambiguity tolerance, as well as their impact on attainment in learning English as a foreign language. Moreover, it also aimed to shed light on the link between these traits and students’ assessments (i.e., self-assessment and school grades). The findings of the study provide a basis for proposing specific profiles of foreign language learners with different levels of openness and ambiguity tolerance.

Book excerpt: Case Study from the year 2016 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: A, International Islamic University Malaysia, course: Bachelor of Arts (Honours) English for International Communication, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors affecting the level of English proficiency among International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) undergraduate students. A set of questionnaires were distributed online and data from a sample of 75 students were collected through Google Forms. Two demographic factors, namely gender and years of learning English, were used as the variables. The finding of the study suggests that the factors affecting the level of English proficiency among IIUM undergraduate students were not affected by gender but were affected by the duration of learning English. The factors that were contributing to the level of English proficiency among IIUM undergraduate students were language anxiety, students’ attitude and also peers, parental and teacher influences. Besides, the study also revealed that there is no significant relationship between cultural stereotypes and students’ performance in second language acquisition. The level of English proficiency among Malaysian students are often questioned. Despite learning English for almost 10 years in school, the majority of Malaysian students still encounter difficulties in using the language effectively especially in tertiary education. Many local graduates are still unemployed due to their lack of fluency in English.

Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2016 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: A, ( Atlantic International University ), course: MOTIVATION IN THE CLASSROOM, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study is to identify what motivates the 1st year Undergraduate students from a public University located at the center of Mindelo City in Cape Verde to learn English as a foreign language. Motivation is a relevant requisite in learning a foreign language, and is an issue that has been discussed by many educators since it appears absent in many students and so present in others. Furthermore, this paper will also address what is the particular influence of Mindelo tourism in the students’ motivation and if the motivations presented contribute with their learning outcomes in English language. Twenty 1st year undergraduate students of English Studies from the University of Cape Verde in the city of Mindelo, Cape Verde, participated in this study. There were 8 females and 12 male student participants, with an age range from 19 to 31 years old. Having in mind the purpose of this study, this research focused on qualitative data collection and the data was collected through questionnaire and semi structured interviews. After analysing and discussing the obtained data, the results suggest that the participants of this study display an extrinsic and instrumental motivation, since it is the region's tourism that influences the motivation of these students in a positive way to the English learning, resulting in a good general performance of these students.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) in the subject Didactics - English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, , language: English, abstract: The primary objective of this research was to gather data on personality differences which were affecting teachers teaching methods. The study was necessitated by having scenarios where Chinese’s students exhibited different learning styles due to the different personality traits. As a future teacher I felt the need to conduct this research and back up several studies that had been done on English learning as a foreign language. The study also checked and evaluated how personality differences affected learning and the personality effects in teachers teaching methods for Chinese college students. The study used qualitative study using literature review as methodology and described in-depth the conceptual philosophy, study strategy, data collecting procedure and techniques, strengths and limitations and ethical issues that were taken into consideration. There are different research philosophies that governed the study with qualitative research including ontology and epistemology. The research reported and discussed the cultural trends and the attitudes as well as approaches that Chinese college students had to their studies. The study also found out that Chinese college students used the major learning styles of rote, silent and passive. The study found that personality traits associated with students have a significant influence on the success of learning English as a second language.
