Book excerpt: Correct and precise measurements of room acoustic parameters are of fundamental importance for subjective room impression characterization and for the physical description of the sound field. This thesis investigates external influences on acoustic measurements and errors of the resulting room acoustic parameters. Theoretical models have been developed to predict these errors and indicate the tolerable limits of the described influences. To validate these models, specially designed room acoustic measurements that separate the individual influence factors have been conducted. Noise has been identified as one of the main influence factors and occurs during every measurement. In this thesis the performance of five commonly used stationary noise compensation methods are systematically analyzed depending on the peak signal-to-noise ratio. Impulsive noise that could also occur during the measurement is investigated separately, as the previously introduced compensation techniques are unsuited to handle the influence. The second part of this thesis analyzes the influence of time variances during measurements. Inter- and intra-measurement temperature changes, air movement, and human-sized scattering objects have been investigated.

In fact, with the development and improvement of innovative computational techniques and with the growing need for predictive models, an impressive boost has been observed in several research and application areas, such as noise control, indoor acoustics, and industrial applications. This led us to the proposal of a special issue about “Modelling, Simulation and Data Analysis in Acoustical Problems”, as we believe in the importance of these topics in modern acoustics’ studies. In total, 81 papers were submitted and 33 of them were published, with an acceptance rate of 37.5%. According to the number of papers submitted, it can be affirmed that this is a trending topic in the scientific and academic community and this special issue will try to provide a future reference for the research that will be developed in coming years.

A criterion for the validity and comparability of measured values is their uncertainty. Still, in room acoustical measurements, the application of established rules to interpret uncertainties in measurement is not yet widespread. This raises the question of the validity and interpretability of room acoustical measurements. This work discusses the uncertainties in measuring room acoustical single-number quantities that complies with the framework of the "Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement"(GUM). Starting point is a structured search of variables that potentially influence the measurement of room impulse responses. In a second step, this uncertainty is propagated through the algorithm that determines single-number quantities. A second emphasis is placed on the investigation of spatial fluctuations of the sound field in auditoria. The spatial variance of the sound field in combination with an uncertain measurement position marks a major contribution to the overall measurement uncertainty. To reach general conclusions, the relation between changes in the measurement location and the corresponding changes in measured room acoustical quantities is investigated empirically in extensive measurement series. This study shows how precisely a measurement position must be defined to ensure a given uncertainty of room acoustical single-number quantities. The presented methods form a foundation that can be exibly extended in future investigations to include additional influences on the measurement uncertainty.

Book excerpt: It was shown in Part 1 (AD-437 995) of this series of reports that appreciable errors in sound speed and sound absorption determinations may be attributed to a neglect in applying appropriate corrections to those situations closely approximating free-field conditions (finite size, plane-parallel source). In the present report it is shown that appreciable errors in the measurement of sound speed and sound absorption for guided mode propagation may be attributed to neglect in applying corrections that may be required because of the selection of geometric parameters or the method of measurement. This report contains graphs of pressure and phase, relative to planewave values and averaged over a plane-parallel receiver of size equal to the source size, for acoustic energy propagation down a right-circular liquid cylinder with lateral boundary condition appropriate to one of the following: absolutely rigid walls, infinitely flexible walls, liquid walls, or elastic solid walls. The latter boundary condition, which is considered to be that more appropriate to the situation of a liquid contained within a thick-walled metal tube, is shown to result in maximum anomalies in sound speed determinations when the transducer completely closes one end of the tube. Book excerpt: Spatial audio is a dynamic and rapidly evolving field, as it is closely linked to advances in computer technology and digital signal processing. The democratization of virtual reality hardware available as consumer devices has moved the field further out of traditional laboratory research, and directly into applied research targeting a wide range of consumers. Advances in Fundamental and Applied Research on Spatial Audio presents a collection of eight peer-reviewed chapters on this exciting area of research. The contributions are organized into three sections: “Acoustic Methodology”, “Perception”, and “Applications”, and cover a range of topics, addressing both headphone- and loudspeaker-based reproductions, offering both methodological overviews and specific case studies.

Book excerpt: Well established as a classic reference and specialised textbook, since its first publication in 1973, Heinrich Kuttruff’s Room Acoustics combines detailed coverage with a state of art presentation of the theory and practice of sound behaviour in closed spaces. This sixth edition presents several additional new sections, for instance on the reflection of a spherical wave from a wall, on finite element methods for sound field calculation and on virtual reality, as well as giving an overhaul of the standard material. Particular emphasis is given to the properties and calculation of reverberation, the most obvious acoustical feature of a room. And further key topics include the various mechanisms of sound absorption and their practical application as well as scattering by wall irregularities including pseudo-stochastic structures. Extensive space is given to of psychoacoustic insights and the quality criteria derived from them, along with new procedures for the sensory assessment of concert hall acoustics. As in earlier editions, one full and updated chapter is devoted to the design and performance of electroacoustic systems which nowadays is not just a method for sound amplification but offers many possibilities for correcting acoustic deficiencies and modifying a hall’s natural acoustics.

Book excerpt: Soundscape Basics and Practical Implications Soundscape research represents a paradigm shift, as it involves human and social sciences and physical measurements to account for the diversity of soundscapes across countries and cultures. Moreover, it treats environmental sounds as a resource rather than a waste. Soundscape and the Built Environment is the first book to systematically discuss soundscape in the built environment. It begins with a presentation of theory and basic background, answering questions such as: what is soundscape, how is it important, and how does it affect people in terms of their health and perception on the acoustic environment. The book then sets out tools for implementing a soundscape approach, with measurement techniques, mapping, and good soundscape practices. It also delivers a series of examples of the application of the soundscape approach in planning, design, and assessment. Discusses soundscape and environmental noise Explores cultural variations and the way they influence soundscape Introduces binaural measurement technology and psychoacoustics Examines the physical, psychological, and physiological restorative mechanism of high-quality acoustic environments Presents soundscape mapping based on human perception of sound sources Includes real-world examples and case studies highlighting the key issues in soundscape intervention Soundscape and the Built Environment is written by a group of leading international figures and derives from a four-year EU COST project on Soundscapes of European Cities and Landscapes. It presents a consensus on the current state of the art and is not merely a collection of different views. It is written for acoustic consultants, urban planners, designers and policy makers, as well as for graduate students and researchers.
