Book excerpt: An experimental investigation has been conducted to determine the effects of the wall boundary layer upon the performance of an axial-flow fan rotor. Tests were conducted at low Mach numbers and at one blade angle on a fan designed to have uniform downstream tangential velocity. The maximum disturbed-flow region of the six boundary-layer configurations tested exceeded one-half of the annular width of the duct and the peak efficiency was reduced 2 1/2 percent for this condition. The over-all loss in efficiency may possibly be reduced by decreasing the blade pitch angle in the boundary-layer region to conform to the upstream velocity profile.

Book excerpt: Axial Flow Fans: Design and Practice focuses on the design of axial flow fans and the practices involved in their applications. The manuscript first offers information on the fluid mechanics of ducted fans, boundary layer and skin friction relations, and aerofoil data for blade design. Discussions focus on flow deflection in cascade of aerofoils, pitching moment, lift, surface roughness in turbulent boundary layers, turbulent boundary layers in pressure gradients, laminar skin friction, viscosity and boundary layers, and similarity and non-dimensional numbers. The text then ponders on vortex flows in ducting and fan, ducts, and introduction to fan design methods. The book takes a look at the momentum and blade element considerations on free vortex flow of rotor and rotor losses. Topics include momentum considerations, profile drag, tip clearance losses, optimum conditions in terms of the flow and swirl coefficients, pressure relations and velocity vectors, and thrust and torque gradients. Tail fairing design and associated losses, overall efficiencies, torque, thrust, and power, and the design of fan unit with arbitrary vortex flow are also discussed. The publication is a dependable source of information for engineers and readers interested in the design of axial flow fans and practices involved in their operation.

Book Synopsis Method for Calculating Lift Distribtutions for Unswept Wings with Flaps Or Ailerons by Use of Nonlinear Section Lift Data by : James C. Sivells
Download or read book Method for Calculating Lift Distribtutions for Unswept Wings with Flaps Or Ailerons by Use of Nonlinear Section Lift Data written by James C. Sivells and published by . This book was released on 1951 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method is presented for calculating lift distributions for unswept wings with flaps or ailerons using nonlinear section lift data. This method is based upon lifting-line theory and is an extension to the method described by NACA Report 865. Simplified computing forms containing detailed examples are given for both symmetrical and asymmetrical lift distributions. A few comparisons of experimental and calculated characteristics are also presented.

Book Synopsis Detailed Flow Measurements in Casing Boundary Layer of 429-meter-per-second-tip-speed Two-stage Fan by : William T. Gorrell
Download or read book Detailed Flow Measurements in Casing Boundary Layer of 429-meter-per-second-tip-speed Two-stage Fan written by William T. Gorrell and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailed flow measurements made in the casing boundary layer of a two-stage transonic fan are summarized. These measurements were taken at stations upstream of the fan, between all blade rows, and downstream of the last blade row. At the design tip speed (429 m/sec) the fan achieved a peak efficiency of 0.846 at a pressure ratio of 2.471. The boundary layer data were obtained at three weight flows at the design speed: one near choke flow, one near peak efficiency, and one near stall. The data presented show steep axial velocity profiles at the stator exits were not as steep as those at the rotor exits. The data also show overturning of the flow at the tip at the stator exits. The effect of mixing is shown by the redistribution of the first-stage rotor-exit total temperature profile as is passes through the following stator.
