Book excerpt: The mechanisms contributing to the attenuation of earthquake ground motion in the distance range of 10 to 200 km are studied with the aid of laboratory data, coda waves and strong motion attenuation measurements in the northeastern United States and Canada and theoretical models. The relative contributions to attenuation of anelasticity of crustal rocks (constant Q), fluid flow and scattering are evaluated. Scattering is found to be strong with albedo of Bo - 0.9 and scattering extinction length of about 17 km. The intrinsic attenuation in the crust can be explained by a high constant Q (500

Book excerpt: Rg and Pg velocities and Rg attenuation have been examined for the Central Merrimack Synclinorium and nearby regions in southeastern Maine using digital records from a seismic refraction experiment. Determination of Rg group velocities and Pg travel times indicates that both lateral variations and azimuthal anisotropy are present in the study area. The axes of the axes of the azimuthal velocity anisotropy appear to lie along and perpendicular to the Appalachian structural strike in the region, with Rg group velocities along strike up to 20% faster than cross strike velocities. Measurement of Rg attenuation gives Q values of 25-80, varying with frequency. Inversion of the Rg group velocity for velocity structure shows that both the compressional and shear velocities increase rapidly with depth in the upper 1 km in the region. Keywords: Short period Rayleigh waves, Anisotropy, Earth crustal structure, Seismic wave attenuation, New England. (edc).

Book excerpt: This book contains selected papers presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Strong Ground Motion Seismology", held in Ankara, Turkey between June 10 and 21, 1985. The strong ground motion resulting from a major earthquake determines the level of the seismic hazard to enable earthquake engineers to assess the structural performance and the consecutive risks to the property and life, as well as providing detailed information to seismologists about its source mechanism. From the earthquake engineering point the main problem is the specification of a design level ground motion for a given source-site-structure-economic life and risk combination through deterministic and probabilistic approaches. In seismology the strong motion data provide the high frequency information to determine the rupture process and the complexity of the source mechanism. The effects of the propagation path on the strong ground motion is a research area receiving sub stantial attenuation both from earthquake engineers and seismologists. The Institute provided a venue for the treatment of the subject matter by a series of lectures on earthquake source models and near field theories; effects of propagation paths and site conditions, numerical and empirical methods for prediction; data acquisition and analysis; hazard assessment and engineering application.

Book excerpt: The past few decades have witnessed the growth of the Earth Sciences in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding of the planet that we live on. This development addresses the challenging endeavor to enrich human lives with the bounties of Nature as well as to preserve the planet for the generations to come. Solid Earth Geophysics aspires to define and quantify the internal structure and processes of the Earth in terms of the principles of physics and forms the intrinsic framework, which other allied disciplines utilize for more specific investigations. The first edition of the Encyclopedia of Solid Earth Geophysics was published in 1989 by Van Nostrand Reinhold publishing company. More than two decades later, this new volume, edited by Prof. Harsh K. Gupta, represents a thoroughly revised and expanded reference work. It brings together more than 200 articles covering established and new concepts of Geophysics across the various sub-disciplines such as Gravity, Geodesy, Geomagnetism, Seismology, Seismics, Deep Earth Processes, Plate Tectonics, Thermal Domains, Computational Methods, etc. in a systematic and consistent format and standard. It is an authoritative and current reference source with extraordinary width of scope. It draws its unique strength from the expert contributions of editors and authors across the globe. It is designed to serve as a valuable and cherished source of information for current and future generations of professionals.

Book excerpt: Seismic waves – generated both by natural earthquakes and by man-made sources – have produced an enormous amount of information about the Earth's interior. In classical seismology, the Earth is modeled as a sequence of uniform horizontal layers (or sperical shells) having different elastic properties and one determines these properties from travel times and dispersion of seismic waves. The Earth, however, is not made of horizontally uniform layers, and classic seismic methods can take large-scale inhomogeneities into account. Smaller-scale irregularities, on the other hand, require other methods. Observations of continuous wave trains that follow classic direct S waves, known as coda waves, have shown that there are heterogeneities of random size scattered randomly throughout the layers of the classic seismic model. This book focuses on recent developments in the area of seismic wave propagation and scattering through the randomly heterogeneous structure of the Earth, with emphasis on the lithosphere. The presentation combines information from many sources to present a coherent introduction to the theory of scattering in acoustic and elastic materials and includes analyses of observations using the theoretical methods developed.

Book excerpt: Seismic waves generated by earthquakes have been interpreted to provide us information about the Earth’s structure across a variety of scales. For short periods of less than 1 second, the envelope of seismograms changes significantly with increased travel distance and coda waves are excited by scattering due to randomly distributed heterogeneities in the Earth. Deterministic structures such as horizontally uniform velocity layer models in traditional seismology cannot explain these phenomena. This book focuses on the Earth heterogeneity and scattering effects on seismic waves. Topics covered are recent developments in wave theory and observation including: coda wave analysis for mapping medium heterogeneity and monitoring temporal variation of physical properties, radiation of short-period seismic waves from an earthquake fault, weak localization of seismic waves, attenuation of seismic waves in randomly porous media, synthesis of seismic wave envelopes in short periods, and laboratory investigations of ultrasonic wave propagation in rock samples. Understanding new methods for the analysis of short-period seismic waves to characterize the random heterogeneity of the Earth on many scales Observations of seismic wave scattering Discussion of techniques for mapping medium heterogeneity and for monitoring temporal change in medium characteristics Up-to-date techniques for the synthesis of wave envelopes in random media

Book excerpt: Work on this contract examined two subjects, the analysis of seismic data using the NORESS array in southern Norway and the attenuation properties of the crust. This document consists of two preprints. The first, 'Phase velocity estimation of diffusely scattered waves deals with work at NORESS which was partly carried out under a previous contract, partly in conjunction with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and partly under this contract. The second paper, 'A model for attenuation and scattering in the earth's crust', describes work on attenuation. Keywords: Coda waves; Seismic array analysis; Phase velocity; Rayleigh waves. (EDC).
