Book excerpt: Experimental investigations demonstrate a significant effect of pre-strain on fracture toughness and stable crack growth resistance of a low carbon structural steel. Fracture toughness, Ji for the onset of stable ductile crack growth is decreased to one half with a 9% pre-strain due to cold rolling. The characteristic distance model for ductile crack initiation was applied to analyze parameters affecting the degradation of fracture resistance. The model predicts that value of Ji is given as a linear function of yield strength and ductility of the material. In order to confirm the theoretical prediction, notched round bar tensile tests were performed and ductility under a high triaxial stress state was measured. Critical plastic strain for micro-void coalescence is significantly decreased with increasing pre-strain. Degradation in Ji due to pre-strain can be well explained by the characteristic distance model.

Book excerpt: This project is about to study the effect of pre-strain on mechanical properties of low carbon steel. The objectives for this project are to differentiate the influence of various pre-strain on mechanical properties of low carbon steel. This project involves analysis of the mechanical properties of low carbon steel. From the material composition test done, the material that are used is low carbon steel AISI1018. Investigate the influence of pre-strain on the mechanical properties and fitness-for-service of the low carbon steel pipeline subjected to large plastic deformation. Axial tensile pre-strains of 1.5, 5 and 10% were applied to bar-type tensile specimens extracted from the longitudinal direction of the pipe body prior to mechanical testing. Tensile test results revealed that yield strength and tensile strength increased with increasing tensile pre-strain. The rate of increase of the yield strength was greater than that of the tensile strength. The engineering and true stress-strain curves of the virgin and pre-strained materials at room temperature. There was no difference between the virgin material and the pre-strain material in the elastic region; however, strain hardening decreased with increased prestrain in the plastic zone. Increasing pre-strain increased yield strength but decreased the strain to fracture. The difference in fracture strain between the virgin and pre-strained materials corresponded to the amount of pre-strain applied prior to the tensile tests.
Book Synopsis Influence of Metallurgical Phase Transformation on Crack Propagation of 15-5PH Stainless Steel and 16MND5 Low Carbon Steel by : Jikai Liu

This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ou study focuses on the effects of phase transformations on crack propagation. We want to understand the changes of fracture toughness during welding. In this work, fracture toughness is expressed by J-integral. There are many experimental methods to obtain the critical toughness JIC but they are impractical for our investigation during phase transformation. That is the reason why we have proposed a method coupling mechanical tests, digital image correlation and finite element simulation. The fracture tests are implemented on pre-cracked single edge notched plate sample which is easy for machining and heat conduct during phase transformation. The tests are conducted at different temperatures until rupture. Digital image correlation gives us the displacement information on every sample. Each test is then simulated by finite element where the fracture toughness is evaluated by the method G-Theta at the crack propagation starting moment found by potential drop method and digital image correlation technical. Two materials have been studied, 15Cr-5Ni martensitic precipitation hardening stainless steel and 16MND5 ferritic low carbon steel. For these two materials, different test temperatures were chosen before, during and after phase transformation for testing and failure characterization of the mechanical behavior. Investigation result shows that metallurgical phase transformation has an influence on fracture toughness and further crack propagation. For 15-5PH, the result of J1C shows that the as received 15-5PH has higher fracture toughness than the one at 200°C. The toughness is also higher than the original material after one cycle heat treatment probably due to some residual austenite. Meanwhile, pure austenite 15-5PH at 200°C has higher fracture toughness than pure martensitic 15-5PH at 200°C. For 16MND5, the result also proves that the phase transformation affects fracture toughness. The as received material has bigger J1C than the situation where it was heated to 600°C. On the other hand, the material at 600°C just before isothermal bainite transformation after the austenitization during cooling process also has higher fracture toughness than the one at 600°C before austenitization. These two conclusions are consistent well with the result of 15-5PH. But the final situation of 16MND5 after one cycle heat treatment has a slightly smaller J1C than the receiving situation. It means that one cycle heat treatment hasn't an significant influence on 16MND5fracture toughness. Conclusions show that one should pay attention to the heating period before austenitization of the substrate material when people do the welding as the higher temperature will bring the lower fracture toughness during this process. While during cooling period, the fracture toughness doesn't change a lot during, before or after the cooling induced phase transformation. Even for 15-5PH, it has a better fracture toughness after the martensite transformation than before.

Book excerpt: Ths influence of work hardening exponent on the fracture toughness of 4340, 18% nickel maraging, and AM-355 stainless steel was studied. In most cases the effects produced by variations in work hardening were difficult to analyze due to accompanying changes in yield strength and microstructure. In this investigation the transition in fracture mode induced by varying section size was used as a basic evaluation method since complicating effects due to yield strength changes were not introduced. The results indicated that the transition from flat to shear failures occurred in larger section sizes in the material with the lower work hardening exponent. Once full shear failures were obtained, however, materials with higher work hardening coefficients required greater energy to produce failure. The influence of work hardening on the transition behavior could be rationalized on the basis of the larger plastic zone present in the steel with the lower strain hardening coefficient. Although useful correlations between the strain hardening index and the fracture mode transition could be obtained no quantitative relationship between work hardening exponent, as defined by strain to maximum load, and plane strain fracture toughness was evident. This book was released on 1969 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The heat treatment response of a 350-grade maraging steel, with the nominal composition 18.5 Ni, 12 Co, 4.6 Mo, 1.4 Ti, balance Fe, has been determined in billet and bar form. When aged at temperatures below 900F, the material was very susceptible to subcritical crack growth, and premature brittle fracture occurred in unnotched tension specimens loaded at a slow strain rate in laboratory air. Fracture mechanics was used to interpret this behavior. (Author).
