Book excerpt: Potato is the fourth major staple food in the world and is still rapidly gaining importance, especially in the tropics. In May, 1994 the second international potato modelling conference was held in Wageningen, the Netherlands, as a summerschool of the C. T. de Wit Graduate School. The conference was sponsored by DLO, SCRI, SSCR, W AU and the LEB-Fund. Over 80 scientists participated, coming from 16 countries. Of each crop physiological and modelling subject, a leading scientist was requested to write a review of the most recent developments in his or her field. The reviews, with highlights from the authors' own work, are such that the physiological work described is of interest to the modeller and the modelling work to the crop physiologist. Applications of the quantitative approach are also reviewed in the concluding chapters that deal with decision support systems, breeding and agro-ecological zoning. An outstanding point of this book is that both the crop ecology and the modelling of a broad range of biotic and abiotic factors are treated by scientists representing groups which are specialized in the subject. The two related disciplines met during the conference and thus wrote the chapters with each other's interest in mind. The book highlights the limitations for potato growth and development from the viewpoints of both the crop physiologist and the crop-systems analyst.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nematode interactions are important biological phenomena and of great significance in agriculture. It is a fascinating subject which is multidisciplinary by nature, and concerns any scientist involved with plant health. There have been marked advances in our knowledge of various aspects of the subject in the last two decades. This study area has been the subject of several reviews, but there was no exclusive text on the subject. This has stressed the need to document the information, developing a unifying theme which treated nematode interactions in a holistic manner. This book is about the inter action of plant-parasitic nematodes with other plant pathogens or root symbionts, the nature of their associations, their impact on the host and con sequential interactive effects on the involved organisms. Since nematodes are at the centre of the theme, the responsibility of understanding of other plant pathogens dealt with in this book is largely delegated to the reader. I have limited the book content to interactions with biotic pathogens and root symbionts only, for various reasons. The book embodies 16 chapters, and attempts to present balanced infor mation on various aspects of nematode interactions with other plant pathogens and root symbionts. Some chapters describe general aspects of the subject. Interactions of nematodes with specific groups of organisms are addressed in the remaining chapters.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the Proceedings of the International Conference on Effects of Crop Rotation on Potato Production in the Temperate Zones. This conference was held in the International Agricultural Centre at Wageningen, The Netherlands, August 14 - 19, 1988, under the auspices of the European Association for Potato Research (EAPR), the Potato Association of America (PAA) and the Dutch National Council for Agricultural Research (NRLO). The length of rotations affect the performance of potato crops and yields are often reduced if rotations are too short. The kinds of crops within a rotation will also affect potato performance, especially those grown in the previous season. It was a major aim of the conference to bring together specialists of various disciplines to examine these determinants of potato yield. The Organizing Committee is glad that all relevant aspects of the theme are highlighted in these proceedings. The contents of the contributions are primarily left to the responsibility of the authors. J. Vos C.D. van Loon G.J. Bollen ORGANIZATION OF THE CONFERENCE The European Association for Potato Research (EAPR) and the Potato Association of America (PAA) nominated representatives in the Conference Committee. PAA was represented by prof. dr E.E. Ewing (Ithaca, USA) and by dr R.E. Thornton (Pullman, USA); EAPR was represented by prof. dr J.C. Holmes (Edinburgh, UK), ir C.D. van Loon (Lelystad, NL), and dr ir J. Vos (chairman; Wageningen, NL).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fungal Wilt Diseases of Plants focuses on wilt diseases caused by the fungal genera Verticillium, Fusarium, and Ceratocystis. Special attention is given to the interactions of physiological, biochemical, and anatomical factors, as these relate to pathogenesis and mechanisms of disease resistance. Organized into 16 chapters, this book begins with a description, in a historical perspective, of the major research themes in fungal wilt diseases. It then looks into the worldwide status of this plant disease. The three subsequent chapters describe the epidemiology and life cycle of the major fungal wilt pathogens in Fusarium, Verticillium, and Ceratocystis. This book also provides an in-depth view of the genetics and biochemistry of these pathogens; the nature of pathogenesis and the effects of wilt pathogens on host-water relations; and the sources and genetics of host resistance in field and fruit crops, vegetable crops, and shade trees. Other chapters are dedicated to the biochemistry, physiology, and the anatomical aspects of resistance and to the progress in the biological and chemical control of these pathogens. This text will be of great value to graduate students and senior research scientists in plant pathology, physiology, and biochemistry, who are specifically involved in studying wilt diseases and host-parasite interactions. It will provide them the detailed background information needed to supplement their specialized research interests.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive resource for students and researchers Management of Nematode and Insect-Borne Plant Diseases examines the various aspects of disease control from an international perspective. Leading academics and researchers around the world address the microbial control of insect pests, the use of nematophagous fungi and biofumigation in the control of plant-parasitic nematodes, the use of genetically manipulated microbes, and the biology and control of vectors. Management of Nematode and Insect-Borne Plant Diseases provides detailed descriptions of the management of diseases caused by insects and by plant-parasitic nematodes. This unique book includes in-depth examinations of the use of arthropod microbial control agents; the biology and control of bacteria; the use of living and synthetic mulches; the genetic transformation of microbial control agents; the integrated use of different control options; the use of nematophagus fungi as a control agent; the use of biofumigation; potato early dying complex; host/plant resistance; and RNAi silencing. Each chapter is written by an experienced scientist in that specific field to produce a single reference resource. Management of Nematode and Insect-Borne Plant Diseases includes: the latest research on the development of microbial control agents against insect and mite pests up-to-date theory on the management of the vectors and disease in fruit and nut crops the use of mulches in the control of homopteran pests an overview of the microbial control of insect pests a look at the increasing role of biological control agents an examination of nematode resistance in vegetable crops a historical background of RNAi, its biology, and its function in the eukaryotic system and much more Management of Nematode and Insect-Borne Plant Diseases is a comprehensive professional resource for botanists, agriculturalists, environmental scientists, biologists, zoologists, ecologists, entomologists, plant pathologists, horticulturalists, plant protection scientists, and biotechnologists.

Book excerpt: Macrophomina Phaseolina: Ecobiology, Pathology and Management provides insights into the sustainable prevention and treatment of this wide-spread challenge to plant health. With a focus on agricultural as well as non-food plant challenges, the book highlights diverse approaches and provides central insights. The pathogen?of M. phaseolina affects the fibrovascular system of roots and basal internodes of its host, impeding the transport of water and nutrients to the upper parts of the plant, thus resulting in progressive wilting, premature drying and dying, loss of vigor, and reduced yield. Finally, the book explores the interaction of M. phaseolina with soil, microbes and ecological conditions to control disease-causing strategies. Recognizing the necessity that strategies applied to manage the disease should have no or minimum effect on ecological resources, the book focuses on alternative sustainable management technologies such as mix-cropping, the use of antagonistic bacteria and fungi and microbial biosurfactants, plant growth promoting antagonistic rhizobacteria and how cultural practices may also play an important role. - Identifies plant diseases caused by Macrophomina phaseolina - Explores M. phaseolina genetic diversity - Highlights pesticide tolerance and alternative control options
