Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the qualitative study of solutions of superlinear elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations and systems. This class of problems contains, in particular, a number of reaction-diffusion systems which arise in various mathematical models, especially in chemistry, physics and biology. The first two chapters introduce to the field and enable the reader to get acquainted with the main ideas by studying simple model problems, respectively of elliptic and parabolic type. The subsequent three chapters are devoted to problems with more complex structure; namely, elliptic and parabolic systems, equations with gradient depending nonlinearities, and nonlocal equations. They include many developments which reflect several aspects of current research. Although the techniques introduced in the first two chapters provide efficient tools to attack some aspects of these problems, they often display new phenomena and specifically different behaviors, whose study requires new ideas. Many open problems are mentioned and commented. The book is self-contained and up-to-date, it has a high didactic quality. It is devoted to problems that are intensively studied but have not been treated so far in depth in the book literature. The intended audience includes graduate and postgraduate students and researchers working in the field of partial differential equations and applied mathematics. The first edition of this book has become one of the standard references in the field. This second edition provides a revised text and contains a number of updates reflecting significant recent advances that have appeared in this growing field since the first edition.

Book excerpt: Some nonlinear stationary reaction-diffusion systems involving nonlinear terms which may be discontinuous are considered. Such systems occur, for instance, in the study of chemical reactions and the discontinuities correspond to reactions of order zero. In such concrete model, the set where the reactant vanishes plays an important role. Here we prove the existence of solutions for a general class of such systems satisfying Dirichlet or nonlinear boundary conditions. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given assuring that the reactant component vanishes on a set of positive measure. Estimates on the location of such set are given. (Author).

Book excerpt: This book provides a crash course on various methods from the bifurcation theory of Functional Differential Equations (FDEs). FDEs arise very naturally in economics, life sciences and engineering and the study of FDEs has been a major source of inspiration for advancement in nonlinear analysis and infinite dimensional dynamical systems. The book summarizes some practical and general approaches and frameworks for the investigation of bifurcation phenomena of FDEs depending on parameters with chap. This well illustrated book aims to be self contained so the readers will find in this book all relevant materials in bifurcation, dynamical systems with symmetry, functional differential equations, normal forms and center manifold reduction. This material was used in graduate courses on functional differential equations at Hunan University (China) and York University (Canada).

Fundamental and recent developments are presented on the inequalities of Abel, Agarwal, Beckenbach, Bessel, Cauchy–Hadamard, Chebychev, Markov, Euler’s constant, Grothendieck, Hilbert, Hardy, Carleman, Landau–Kolmogorov, Carlson, Bernstein–Mordell, Gronwall, Wirtinger, as well as inequalities of functions with their integrals and derivatives. Each inequality is discussed with proven results, examples and various applications. Graduate students and advanced research scientists in mathematical analysis will find this reference essential to their understanding of differential and integral inequalities. Engineers, economists, and physicists will find the highly applicable inequalities practical and useful to their research.

Book excerpt: We consider coupled reaction-diffusion models, where some components react and diffuse on the boundary of a region, while other components diffuse in the interior and react with those on the boundary through mass transport. We proved if vector fields are locally Lipschitz functions and satisfies quasi-positivity conditions, and if initial data are component-wise bounded and non-negative then there exists T_max >0 such that our model has component-wise non-negative solution with T = T_max. Our criterion for determining local existence of the solution involves derivation of a priori estimates, as well as regularity of the solution, and the use of a fixed point theorem. Moreover, if vector fields satisfies certain conditions explained in dissertation, then there exists solution for all time, t>0. Classical potential theory and estimates for linear initial boundary value problems are used to prove local well-posedness and global existence. This type of system arises in mathematical models for cell processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied mathematics is a central connecting link between scientific observations and their theoretical interpretation. Nonlinear analysis has surely contributed major developments which nowadays shape the face of applied mathematics. At the beginning of the millennium, all sciences are expanding at increased speed. Technological, ecological, economical and medical problem solving is a central issue of every modern society. Mathematical models help to expose fundamental structures hidden in these problems and serve as unifying tools to deepen our understanding. What are the new challenges applied mathematics has to face with the increased diversity of scientific problems? In which direction should the classical tools of nonlinear analysis be developed further? How do new available technologies influence the development of the field? How can problems be solved which have been beyond reach in former times? It is the aim of this book to explore new developments in the field by way of discussion of selected topics from nonlinear analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book on the subject of the periodic unfolding method (originally called "éclatement périodique" in French), which was originally developed to clarify and simplify many questions arising in the homogenization of PDE's. It has since led to the solution of some open problems. Written by the three mathematicians who developed the method, the book presents both the theory as well as numerous examples of applications for partial differential problems with rapidly oscillating coefficients: in fixed domains (Part I), in periodically perforated domains (Part II), and in domains with small holes generating a strange term (Part IV). The method applies to the case of multiple microscopic scales (with finitely many distinct scales) which is connected to partial unfolding (also useful for evolution problems). This is discussed in the framework of oscillating boundaries (Part III). A detailed example of its application to linear elasticity is presented in the case of thin elastic plates (Part V). Lastly, a complete determination of correctors for the model problem in Part I is obtained (Part VI). This book can be used as a graduate textbook to introduce the theory of homogenization of partial differential problems, and is also a must for researchers interested in this field.
