Book excerpt: Modern agriculture needs to review and broaden its practices and business models, by integrating opportunities coming from different adjacent sectors and value chains, including the bio-based industry, in a fully circular economy strategy. Searching for new tools and technologies to increase crop productivity under optimal and sub-optimal conditions and to improve resources use efficiency is crucial to ensure food security while preserving soil quality, microbial biodiversity, and providing business opportunities for farmers. Biostimulants based on microorganisms or organic substances obtained from renewable materials represent a sustainable, efficient technology or complement to synthetic counterparts, to improve nutrient use efficiency and secure crop yield stability. Under the new European Union Regulation 2019/1009, plant biostimulants were defined based on four agricultural functional claims as follows: Plant biostimulants are products that stimulate plant nutrition processes independently of the product's nutrient content with the sole aim of improving one or more of the following characteristics of the plant and/or the plant rhizosphere: 1) nutrient use efficiency, 2) tolerance resistance to (a)biotic stress, 3) quality characteristics or 4) availability of confined nutrients in the soil or rhizosphere’. Many diverse natural substances and chemical derivatives of natural or synthetic compounds, as well as beneficial microorganisms, are cataloged as plant biostimulants including i) humic substances, ii) plant or animal-based protein hydrolysates, iii) macro and micro-algal extracts, iv) silicon, v) arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and vi) plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) belonging to the Azotobacter, Azospirillum and Rhizobium genera.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing an extensive range of photographs and authored by leading horticultural experts, 'Diseases of Temperate Horticultural Plants' is an indispensable reference work for horticultural professionals, academics, students, crop producers as well as amateur horticulturists. The diseases of major crops are presented according to their classification, and the symptoms of each disease, causal pathogen and control measures for each condition are described. The crops covered include the major temperate horticultural crops, organised into easy to navigate sections divided into fruits, vegetables and ornamentals. Within fruits, apples and pears are discussed, as well as ribes and berries, cherries, peaches and plums, nut crops and rhubarb. The vegetable section covers salad crops, brassicas and crucifers, cucurbits, root vegetables, bulb crops, solanaceous vegetables and some herbs. The section on ornamental plants includes a wide range of ornamental garden plants, while a further section discusses diseases of turf grass and ornamental lawns. The book is user-friendly with practical, accessibly written entries organised into discrete sections. The comprehensive nature of this work makes it an invaluable addition to any horticulturist’s library with content that will remain current for years to come.

Book excerpt: Biological management of diseases of crops is influenced by the nature of interactions between the pathogens and other organisms and the plants. Due to development of resistance in pathogens to fungicides and bactericides, determination of compatibility of biotic biocontrol agents with chemicals is essential for selecting strains of biocontrol agents (BCAs) showing resistance to chemicals to effectively restrict use of the chemicals. Microbial plant pathogens and the antagonists present in the soil and on the plant surfaces are influenced by various cultural practices. It is possible to reduce disease incidence and intensity by crop sanitation and using appropriate rotational crops. Application of physical techniques involving the use of heat, solarization and irradiation has potential to reduce the pathogen population or weaken the potential of pathogens present in the seed, planting materials and soil.

Book excerpt: This proceedings is a compilation of 24 papers that were presented at the regional meetings of the forest and conservation nursery associations in the United States in 2006. The Western Forest and Conservation Nursery Association meeting was held at the Hilton Resort Hotel and Conference Center in Eugene, Oregon on June 19 to 22. The meeting was hosted by the USDA Forest Service Dorena Genetic Resource Center and Plum Creek Container Nursery. Morning technical sessions were followed by field trips to USDA Forest Service Dorena Genetic Resource Center and Plum Creek Container Nursery in Cottage Grove, and USDA Agricultural Research Service National Clonal Germplasm Repository in Corvallis. Subject matter for the technical sessions included bareroot and container nursery culturing and monitoring, disease management, and native species restoration. The Southern Forest Nursery Association meeting was held July 10 to 13 at the Holiday Inn Select in Tyler, Texas. The meeting was hosted by the Texas Forest Service Indian Mound Nursery. Technical sessions were followed by tours of the International Paper SuperTree Nursery, Agtoprof, and Kiepersol Estate, outside Tyler; International Paper Forest Seed Center in Douglass; and Texas Forest Service Indian Mound Nursery in Alto. Subject matter for the technical sessions included labor relations and regulations, bareroot and container nursery culturing, hardwood management, pesticide use, and outplanting strategies.
