Book Synopsis Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Translation from Basic Research to Clinical Practice by : B. Vucelic
Download or read book Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Translation from Basic Research to Clinical Practice written by B. Vucelic and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-12-09 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The amount of information on the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease is growing rapidly. This is reflected by a continuous increase in the number of papers presented at international GI meetings. To make things more difficult for practicing physicians, there is also a large number of new clinical trials being published which require periodical critical reviews and recommendations. Faced with these issues, the scientific commitee of the Falk Symposium No. 140 decided to take a different approach and to apply a novel format that is reflected in the title of the Symposium: "Translation from basic research to clinical practice". This book contains the proceedings of that Symposium, held in Dubrovnik, Croatia, on May 7–8, 2004. The sections are designed so that they start with the information from basic sciences on different aspects of these complex diseases and further lead to their clinical implications. Special attention is paid to the mechanisms of actions of established drugs. The last two sections are clinically oriented and focus on the most difficult aspects of both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. This format provides state-of-the-art chapters by leading experts in the field and at the same time up-to-date information on the clinical application of the new knowledge.

Book Synopsis Psychiatric Care of the Medical Patient by : Barry S. Fogel
Download or read book Psychiatric Care of the Medical Patient written by Barry S. Fogel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 1813 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of Psychiatric Care of the Medical Patient brings a classic reference text into the twenty-first century. It combines critical scholarship with the voice of expert clinicians who work at the interface of psychiatry with medical specialties. It is meant to be read for pleasure as well as consulted as a reference. The editors have worked with the authors to bring a consistent perspective to the book - one that sees the medical psychiatrist as an agent for bringing a more comprehensive perspective to medical care. Even seasoned and knowledgeable practitioners will find much that is new to them in this book. The volume covers topics in depth that other books in the field may not cover at all, such as the use of herbal and nutritional therapies for medical-psychiatric symptoms and syndromes, and the choice of questionnaires to supplement history-taking. It looks at old topics in a new way: The chapter on the physical examination applies psychometric considerations to the Babinski sign, describes the method and application of quantitative bedside olfactory testing, and discusses smartphone apps to improve the sensitivity of the examination. Psychiatric Care of the Medical Patient, 3rd Edition provides concepts and information to facilitate the dialogue between psychiatrists and general medical specialists - minimizing psychiatric jargon and speaking in the common language of caring and curious physicians.
Book Synopsis Colitis-Associated Cancer by : Masato Kusunoki
Download or read book Colitis-Associated Cancer written by Masato Kusunoki and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the number of patients with colitis-associated cancer (CAC) is on the increase, the purpose of this book is to review the latest topics concerning management of the disease. In recent years, the diagnostic power of endoscopy and molecular pathology has also grown tremendously, as a result of which they now have a far greater influence on the treatment of CAC. At the moment, appropriate monitoring programs for ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease remain uncertain. At the same time, the latest findings on DNA methylation and microRNAs hold the promise of making revolutionary changes in these areas. Moreover, recent drug advances in the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases have changed surgical indications. On the other hand, the indication of mucosectomy on colorectal cancer in ulcerative colitis and prophylactic abdominoperineal resection for Crohn’s disease remain controversial. This book provides the latest information on the remaining issues of CAC from the point of view of expert surgeons.

Book Synopsis Advances in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases by : P. Rutgeerts
Download or read book Advances in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases written by P. Rutgeerts and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-12-31 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease remain a great therapeutic challenge to the medical community. In recent years knowledge about the pathogenesis of these diseases has progressed rapidly but the cause of the diseases remains completely unknown. It has become clear that dysregulation of the mucosal immune system is the basis for the chronic evolution of the diseases in a genetically susceptible population. Exciting new therapeutic approaches have been attempted in the last couple of years and cytokine and anti-cytokine treatments in particular seem very promising, especially in intractable disease. The format of the Falk Symposium 106 on `Advances in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases', held in Brussels, Belgium, June 18-20, 1998, was somewhat innovative as each session attempted to link the new insights into pathogenetic mechanisms with new therapeutic approaches, resulting in optimal information transfer. The classic therapeutic schemes were updated with a special focus on step-wise build-up of therapy.

Book Synopsis Enteric Glia by : Brian D. Gulbransen
Download or read book Enteric Glia written by Brian D. Gulbransen and published by Biota Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enteric nervous system (ENS) is a complex neural network embedded in the gut wall that orchestrates the reflex behaviors of the intestine. The ENS is often referred to as the “little brain” in the gut because the ENS is more similar in size, complexity and autonomy to the central nervous system (CNS) than other components of the autonomic nervous system. Like the brain, the ENS is composed of neurons that are surrounded by glial cells. Enteric glia are a unique type of peripheral glia that are similar to astrocytes of the CNS. Yet enteric glial cells also differ from astrocytes in many important ways. The roles of enteric glial cell populations in the gut are beginning to come to light and recent evidence implicates enteric glia in almost every aspect of gastrointestinal physiology and pathophysiology. However, elucidating the exact mechanisms by which enteric glia influence gastrointestinal physiology and identifying how those roles are altered during gastrointestinal pathophysiology remain areas of intense research. The purpose of this e-book is to provide an introduction to enteric glial cells and to act as a resource for ongoing studies on this fascinating population of glia. Table of Contents: Introduction / A Historical Perspective on Enteric Glia / Enteric Glia: The Astroglia of the Gut / Molecular Composition of Enteric Glia / Development of Enteric Glia / Functional Roles of Enteric Glia / Enteric Glia and Disease Processes in the Gut / Concluding Remarks / References / Author Biography
