Book excerpt: This study analyzes the organization of the US Army infantry rifle squad since the end of World War II, focusing on the attempt to gain and then maintain the capability of fire and maneuver at the squad level. Since the end of World War II, the US Army has conducted or commissioned at least nine studies, aimed at determining the optimum organization of the infantry rifle squad. Common trends affect all recent attempts at transforming the US Army and become evident when studying the evolution of the squad, but the goal must remain developing a combat effective unit. Combat effectiveness is determined by applying the evaluative criteria of control, sustainability, flexibility, and lethality. By applying these four criteria to analyze various squad organizations, one can determine the strengths and weaknesses inherent to these organizations, thereby recommending the most combat effective rifle squad organization. The US Army’s current focus on strategic deployability and emerging weapons capabilities is not a new phenomenon, but potentially could cloud the essential issue, developing a military force for optimum combat effectiveness. This study concludes by recommending the optimum squad-level organization for the “Objective Force.”

Growing up in the Baptist church, Standifer thought he had learned the differences between good and evil, right and wrong. But after his days in battle, moral distinctions were no longer as clear. Not in Vain documents Standifer’s lifelong debate with himself over the justification for war by considering not only his reactions during combat but also the feelings that have remained with him for life. He describes these intense emotions in his account of a trip taken to Europe many years after the war and of his recent reunion with some of the former members of his rifle company. Written in an effort to come to terms with his involvement in the war, Not in Vain is a probing and timely study of a citizen’s dedication to his country.

That's because no more than 14 people can successfully sneak up on one. After those 14 have cleared a path through its perimeter obstacles and sentries, their parent unit can then secretly move in. That's a lot safer than storming the place with guns blazing. As a result, many other nations now use such squads as the spearpoint of every attack and strongpoint for every defense. Yet, because of the Pentagon's symbiotic relationship with this country's arms manufacturers, U.S. forces have never developed such a capability. That may be largely why America hasn't decisively won a major overseas conflict since WWII. Better squads require members with more skill and initiative. Such members can often make a strategic difference on their own like spotting the hidden entrance to an underground ammunition dump. Thus, the term "Strategic Rifleman" is born.

There are a lot of stories about the war. Some have been made into movies. If you are looking for sensationalism, you won't find it here. If you have an interest in what war was like to a 20-year-old in the Infantry, Nudge Blue comes close to describing that experience. The combat portion of this story was written directly from notes accumulated during the actual fighting. In the over 50 years since, facts about places and unit action have been verified to assure accuracy. It includes action in several places that are famousthe Hürtgen Forest, the Bulge, the Rhine River crossing at Remagen and contact with the Russians on the Elbe River. The military experience prior to combat, the post-war situation in Europe and commentary about war, in the appendices, were added later. Veterans who were in I Company of the 39th Infantry have commented favorably about Nudge Blue acknowledging it to be a faithful description of their personal experience. Lavender's experiences in combat make for fascinating, insightful reading, and an excellent companion to the late Bob Baldridge's Victory Road, showing what it was like to be an infantryman in the 9th Division.
