Book Synopsis Praxis and Action by : Richard J. Bernstein
Download or read book Praxis and Action written by Richard J. Bernstein and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-06-03 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction: This inquiry is concerned with the themes of praxis and action in four philosophic movements: Marxism, existentialism, pragmatism, and analytic philosophy. It is rare that these four movements are considered in a single inquiry, for there are profound differences of emphasis, focus, terminology, and approach represented by these styles of thought. Many philosophers believe that similarities among these movements are superficial and that a close examination of them will reveal only hopelessly unbridgeable cleavages. While respecting the genuine fundamental differences of these movements, this inquiry is undertaken in the spirit of showing that there are important common themes and motifs in what first appears to be a chaotic babble of voices. I intend to show that the concern with man as an agent has been a primary focal point of each of these movements and further that each contributes something permanent and important to our understanding of the nature and context of human activity.

Download or read book Notre-Dame de Paris written by Victor Hugo and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2004-03-25 with total page 809 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the vaulted Gothic towers of Notre-Dame lives Quasimodo, the hunchbacked bellringer. Mocked and shunned for his appearance, he is pitied only by Esmerelda, a beautiful gypsy dancer to whom he becomes completely devoted. Esmerelda, however, has also attracted the attention of the sinister archdeacon Claude Frollo, and when she rejects his lecherous approaches, Frollo hatches a plot to destoy her that only Quasimodo can prevent. Victor Hugo's sensational, evocative novel brings life to the medieval Paris he loved, and mourns its passing in one of the greatest historical romances of the nineteenth century.

Download or read book Yakṣagāna written by Śivarāma Kāranta and published by Abhinav Publications. This book was released on 1997 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No country in the world is blessed with a greater variety of forms in music, dance and theatre than ours. One of the theatre forms generally described as folk but possessing a strong classical connection is the Yakshagana. Although the name signifies the music of celestial beings, Yakshagana is an amalgam of the sky with the earth. There is both mystery and robustness about this form in which singing and drumming merge with dancing, and words with gestural interpretation, and players clad m costumes of striking colour and contours. It is the cherished cultural possession of the coastal districts of Karnataka. Dr. K.S. Karanth is the foremost living authority on Yakshagana and has been working on all its aspects, namely—dance, music, and literature, since 1930. He has led the way to a deep and systematic study of this art form. He has spent decades travelling to remote villages within Karnataka to inspect and study every Yakshagana manuscript, the earliest going back to A.D. 1651. With his fine literary judgement and aesthetic sensibility, he has traced the changing trends in the performance of Yakshagana. He has interacted with hundreds of Yakshagana artistes to find out what customs in training and interpretation had prevailed earlier and had fallen into disuse and deserved to be resuscitated. He has put together his findings in the shape of two standard books YakshaganaBayalata (1958) in Kannada, and Yakshagana in Kannada and English (1975). The present volume is a revised edition of the earlier book, with additional material and illustrations. It is hoped that the book will provide valuable insights into one of the most attractive and dynamic art forms of our land, as well as into a penetrative mind.

Book Synopsis Ordinary Wonders by : Olesia Nikolaeva
Download or read book Ordinary Wonders written by Olesia Nikolaeva and published by Holy Trinity Publications. This book was released on 2018-04-01 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Deceitful Onion Bulb. A Blessing to Smuggle. The Conjuror of Rain. In this collection of stories as whimsical as their titles, award-winning author Olesia Nikolaeva poignantly recounts life for Christian believers in Soviet and post-Soviet Russia. In a manner reminiscent of the bestselling Everyday Saints these tales reveal a common theme - the subtle, sometimes imperceptible movement of Divine Providence at work in the lives of saints and sinners alike. Her writings bring us to what the ancient Celts called "thin places" where the boundaries of heaven and earth meet and the sacred and the secular can no longer be distinguished.
