This book was released on 1989 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last few years have seen a number of major developments demonstrating that the long-term behavior of solutions of a very large class of partial differential equations possesses a striking resemblance to the behavior of solutions of finite dimensional dynamical systems, or ordinary differential equations. The first of these advances was the discovery that a dissipative PDE has a compact, global attractor with finite Hausdorff and fractal dimensions. More recently, it was shown that some of these PDEs possess a finite dimensional inertial manifold-that is, an invariant manifold containing the attractor and exponentially attractive trajectories. With the improved understanding of the exact connection between finite dimensional dynamical systems and various classes of dissipative PDEs, it is now realistic to hope that the wealth of studies of such topics as bifurcations of finite vector fields and ``strange'' fractal attractors can be brought to bear on various mathematical models, including continuum flows. Surprisingly, a number of distributed systems from continuum mechanics have been found to exhibit the same nontrivial dynamic behavior as observed in low-dimensional dynamical systems. As a natural consequence of these observations, a new direction of research has arisen: detection and analysis of finite dimensional dynamical characteristics of infinite-dimensional systems. This book represents the proceedings of an AMS-IMS-SIAM Summer Research Conference, held in July, 1987 at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Bringing together mathematicians and physicists, the conference provided a forum for presentations on the latest developments in the field and fostered lively interactions on open questions and future directions. With contributions from some of the top experts, these proceedings will provide readers with an overview of this vital area of research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of articles has its origin in a meeting which took place June 12-15, 1989, on the grounds of Salve Regina College in Newport, Rhode Island. The meeting was blessed by beautiful, balmy weather and an idyllic setting. The sessions themselves took place in Ochre Court, one of the elegant and stately old summer cottages for which Newport is acclaimed. Lectures were presented in the grand ballroom overlooking the famous Cliff Walk and Block Island Sound. Counter to general belief, the pleasant surroundings did not appear to encourage truancy or in any other way diminish the quality of the meeting. On the contrary, for the four days of the meeting there was a high level of excitement and optimism about the new perspectives in turbulence, a tone that carried over to lively dinner and evening discussions. The participants represented a broad range of backgrounds, extending from pure mathemat ics to experimental engineering. A dialogue began with the first speakers which cut across the boundaries and gave to the meeting a mood of unity which persisted.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive study of how attractors behave under perturbations for both autonomous and non-autonomous problems. Furthermore, the forward asymptotics of non-autonomous dynamical systems is presented here for the first time in a unified manner. When modelling real world phenomena imprecisions are unavoidable. On the other hand, it is paramount that mathematical models reflect the modelled phenomenon, in spite of unimportant neglectable influences discounted by simplifications, small errors introduced by empirical laws or measurements, among others. The authors deal with this issue by investigating the permanence of dynamical structures and continuity properties of the attractor. This is done in both the autonomous (time independent) and non-autonomous (time dependent) framework in four distinct levels of approximation: the upper semicontinuity, lower semicontinuity, topological structural stability and geometrical structural stability. This book is aimed at graduate students and researchers interested in dissipative dynamical systems and stability theory, and requires only a basic background in metric spaces, functional analysis and, for the applications, techniques of ordinary and partial differential equations.

Book excerpt: Shape optimization deals with problems where the design or control variable is no longer a vector of parameters or functions but the shape of a geometric domain. They include engineering applications to shape and structural optimization, but also original applications to image segmentation, control theory, stabilization of membranes and plates by boundary variations, etc. Free and moving boundary problems arise in an impressingly wide range of new and challenging applications to change of phase. The class of problems which are amenable to this approach can arise from such diverse disciplines as combustion, biological growth, reactive geological flows in porous media, solidification, fluid dynamics, electrochemical machining, etc. The objective and orginality of this NATO-ASI was to bring together theories and examples from shape optimization, free and moving boundary problems, and materials with microstructure which are fundamental to static and dynamic domain and boundary problems.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main theme of the book is the spectral theory for evolution operators and evolution semigroups, a subject tracing its origins to the classical results of J. Mather on hyperbolic dynamical systems and J. Howland on nonautonomous Cauchy problems. The authors use a wide range of methods and offer a unique presentation. The authors give a unifying approach for a study of infinite-dimensional nonautonomous problems, which is based on the consistent use of evolution semigroups. This unifying idea connects various questions in stability of semigroups, infinite-dimensional hyperbolic linear skew-product flows, translation Banach algebras, transfer operators, stability radii in control theory, Lyapunov exponents, magneto-dynamics and hydro-dynamics. Thus the book is much broader in scope than existing books on asymptotic behavior of semigroups. Included is a solid collection of examples from different areas of analysis, PDEs, and dynamical systems. This is the first monograph where the spectral theory of infinite dimensional linear skew-product flows is described together with its connection to the multiplicative ergodic theorem; the same technique is used to study evolution semigroups, kinematic dynamos, and Ruelle operators; the theory of stability radii, an important concept in control theory, is also presented. Examples are included and non-traditional applications are provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains two review articles on the dynamics of partial differential equations that deal with closely related topics but can be read independently. Wayne reviews recent results on the global dynamics of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. This system exhibits stable vortex solutions: the topic of Wayne's contribution is how solutions that start from arbitrary initial conditions evolve towards stable vortices. Weinstein considers the dynamics of localized states in nonlinear Schrodinger and Gross-Pitaevskii equations that describe many optical and quantum systems. In this contribution, Weinstein reviews recent bifurcations results of solitary waves, their linear and nonlinear stability properties and results about radiation damping where waves lose energy through radiation. The articles, written independently, are combined into one volume to showcase the tools of dynamical systems theory at work in explaining qualitative phenomena associated with two classes of partial differential equations with very different physical origins and mathematical properties.
