Book excerpt: Irregular engineering structures are subjected to complicated additional loads which are often beyond conventional design models developed for traditional, simplified plane models. This book covers detailed research and recent progress in seismic engineering dealing with seismic behaviour of irregular and set-back engineering structures. Experimental results as well as special topics of modern design are discussed in detail. In addition, recent progress in seismology, wave propagation and seismic engineering, which provides novel, modern modelling of complex seismic loads, is reported. Particular emphasis is placed on the newly developed rotational, seismic ground-motion effects. This book is a continuation of an earlier monograph which appeared in the same Springer series in 2013 (http://www.springer.com/gp/book/9789400753761).

Book excerpt: Seismic Performance of Asymmetric Building Structures presents detailed investigations on the effective assessment of structural seismic response under excessive torsional vibrations, demonstrating behavioural aspects from local response perspective to global seismic demands. The work provides comprehensive analytical, computational, experimental investigations, and proposes improved design guidelines that structural engineers can utilize to enhance the seismic design of asymmetric building structures. Combining extensive experimental and numerical data stock for seismic performance assessment with a particular focus on asymmetric building structures, the book includes: • An overview of asymmetric building structures from seismic damage perspective • Local and global performance assessment of asymmetric structures under extreme seismic actions • Post-earthquake damage evaluation from varying frequency trends • Extended numerical applications for experimental response validations • Evaluation of critical regions of asymmetric structure with stress concentration • Statistical distribution of seismic response under varying design parameters • Design guidelines for asymmetric building structures This work's comprehensive evaluations are carried out with modern sensing techniques planned with meticulous attention to cover objectives with a particular focus on asymmetry in reinforced concrete and steel structures. It assesses various aspects of asymmetric building structures that are rarely dealt with in the current literature. It gathers fruitful information from various building design codes and explains their limitations in addressing damage-related challenges, which is not only useful for practicing engineers but also for academics. The book will be invaluable for experts, researchers, students and practitioners from relevant areas, as well as for emergency preparedness managers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is evident that European earthquake engineering research and design practice is assuming a role of increasing importance on the international scene. This is primarily due to two considerations; firstly the emergence of a core of European earthquake engineers who are co-operating on a long-term basis for the development of seismic design criteria specific to the European environment and secondly the identification of new problems in existing design practice in the USA and in Japan. It is in this context that European earthquake engineering activities and publications are eagerly observed and awaited by the international community. Includes a compact set of papers from leading research institutions, laboratories and companies in Europe, with a healthy number of contributions from elsewhere. It represents the European state-of-the-art and practice in earthquake testing, analysis & design of civil engineering works as well as strong-motion & hazard studies.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of C-shaped reinforced concrete (RC) core walls as the main lateral force resisting system for building structures is a popular choice for medium- to high-rise buildings. These cores are typically closed on three sides (C-shaped) and are either open or partially open on the fourth side. Despite the frequent use of C-shaped RC core walls as the primary seismic force resisting system (SFRS) for multi-story buildings, there are still challenges in estimating their inelastic seismic response, whether they are separate or coupled C-shaped walls. The eccentricity between the centre of mass and the centre of rigidity tends to induce a significant torsional seismic demand on such walls. To address this issue, several design codes have proposed recommendations for evaluating the effect of this eccentricity. Although National Building Code of Canada (NBCC, 2015) specifies provisions to consider the accidental eccentricity and the torsional sensitivity of the structure in the design, there is a gap in the knowledge of the inelastic structural response of C-shaped RC core walls for new buildings. On the other hand, many existing RC C-shaped walls are in need for retrofitting in order to meet current seismic design codes, or to meet increased demands due to change in the use and occupancy of the building, or to retrofit post-earthquake damages. In recent years, application of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in retrofitting of RC walls has considerably increased due to its advantages such as high strength to weight ratio and its fast and easy installation. The objectives of this thesis are to: (i) investigate, numerically, the effectiveness of FRP retrofitting on the seismic performance of RC shear wall systems, (ii) evaluate the deficiency of seismic design provisions of C-shaped shear wall structures with high torsional sensitivity, (iii) examine, experimentally, the seismic response of FRP-retrofitted C-shaped RC walls to quantify the efficiency of the FRP retrofitting in repairing the RC core walls. To achieve the first objective, a simplified modelling approach was proposed for analyzing the FRP retrofitted RC walls in order to be used as a simple and efficient method in practice. Nonlinear Incremental Dynamic Analysis (IDA) of a typical twelve story RC building structure, following the FEMA P695 methodology, showed that although the increase of torsional sensitivity has no significant effect on the inter-story drift ratios of the building, it could significantly decrease the Collapse Margin Ratio (CMR). To achieve the second objective, building structures with different levels of height and torsional sensitivity were studied. Results showed that although response spectrum analysis (RSA) provides consistent predictions for story shear demand in regular buildings, significant underestimation of design forces might be obtained for buildings with a torsional sensitivity of B ≥ 2.0. Dual Plastic Hinge (DPH) method was found to be an efficient alternative in reducing the story shear demand in structures with high torsional sensitivity, compared to structures designed based on the common Single Plastic Hinge (SPH) method. To achieve the third objective, a previously tested large-scale C-shaped RC wall was retrofitted using carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite sheets and was tested under the same condition and loading protocol of the original wall to quantify the efficacy of FRP retrofitting on the wall's response. Furthermore, multi-directional cyclic tests were conducted in order to evaluate the complete nonlinear response of the FRP retrofitted C-shaped wall up to failure. The assessment was based on experimental measurements and observations in terms of 3D displacements, strains (both from strain gauges and Digital Image Correlation, DIC, system), crack pattern, ductility, curvature profiles and mode of failures. The test showed that the FRP retrofitting scheme used in the current work performed very well by enhancing both the strength and ductility of the retrofitted wall from its damaged state, while holding its stiffness very close, compared to those of the control wall.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 39 (thesis year 1994) a total of 13,953 thesis titles from 21 Canadian and 159 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 39 reports theses submitted in 1994, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
