Book excerpt: This book revisits the history of industry and industrial and economic policy in independent Ireland from the birth of the state to the eve of EEC accession. Though there were several manufacturing employers of significance, and smaller firms in operation in almost every major branch of industry, the Irish Free State was predominantly agricultural at its establishment in 1922. Industrial development was high on the nationalist agenda, as would be the case across the entire developing world in the later post-colonial era. Despite decades of protection, and a substantial increase in the size of the manufacturing sector, Ireland remained under-industrialised when it joined the European Economic Community in 1973. Over the previous decade and a half however the foundations of later convergence had been laid. Ireland was an early adopter of what would come to be known as dual-track reform. The policy of attracting outward-oriented foreign direct investment was initiated before substantial trade liberalisation began. By 1972 there had been a significant diversification in export categories and export destinations, and in the nationality of ownership of the leading manufacturing firms. Some of the most successful indigenous companies of the future were also beginning to emerge. In these and other respects the foundations of the economic progress that would be made over the course of EEC membership were already discernible, notwithstanding the post-accession collapse of most protectionist-era businesses. The analysis is supplemented by a unique firm-level database that allows for the identification of the leading manufacturing firms in operation at any stage from the early 1900s through to 1972. The database extends by more than 50 years the period for which estimates of the significance of foreign-owned industry can be provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of wastewater treatment plants with redundancy to assure a quality end product may be in conflict with efforts to assure effectiveness. Redundancy of major system components is to assure compliance with regulations and protection of the environment and the health and safety of the public and treatment plant staff. However, the capital costs and maintenance associated with redundant equipment does not necessarily enhance facility performance. There are a number of forces driving the level of redundancy in plant designs. Federal and state compliance regulations and the design engineer's past experiences will influence the plant design. To some extent the plant staff may also provide input into the plant design and, therefore, contributes to the redundancy. This report determines alternative methods to address treatment plant redundancy, including examples of methods currently in place and, ideally, insight on the premises leading to these applications. A secondary objective is to identify the similarities and differences in redundancy requirements associated with federal and state regulatory agencies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rich industrialised countries entered the 1980s with unemployment higher than before the Second World War. Britain experienced the impact of recession more immediately and sharply; over one million factory jobs were lost. Originally published in 1983 and now reissued with a new Preface by the author, this book points to the industries, corporations and places in which job losses occurred between 1976 and 1981. The Impact of Recession opens with an examination of national trends which includes the post-war rise and fall of manufacturing employment and the fashionable concept of ‘de-industrialisation’. It considers the possible and actual roles of leading industrial corporations in distributing decline to different areas. The effects of the crisis on individual regions is examined in detail and the author emphasizes that it is not only the traditional areas of recession such as the North East that were affected, but also the manufacturing centres of the Midlands and the normally prosperous South East. Alternative explanations of the distribution of employment are examined and the adequacy of previous explanations of unequal growth and decline are questioned. The book also looks at the extent to which New Towns have suffered in the crisis and whether the well-established consensus about the merits of regional planning has been broken down by the recession.

Book excerpt: The Decline of Trade Union Organisation (1987) considers the reasons behind the decline in trade union membership and discusses the prospects for recovery. It shows that many factors were at work besides unemployment growth and overall it argues that the changing structure and nature of British industry was having a fundamental affect on the nature of trade union activity. It points to legislation which protects individual employees without the need for union involvement; to the fact that a major growth area is the private services sector which has been traditionally poorly unionised; and the rise in smaller non-union plants.

As we slide towards a service sector economy based on finance and tourism, it is worth reflecting on whether this is the most appropriate or inevitable scenario. Manufacturing in Transition makes a genuinely interdisciplinary contribution to the debate over the UK's strategy for industrial renewal. Aimed primarily at business, economics and industrial relations students, it looks at the current state of British manufacturing sector within the global economy and asks whether manufacturing matters in the twenty first century. The books explores key issues such as: the chances of renewal * developments in the management and organisation of operations and supply chains * the differences made by Japanese methods This is a timely assessment of the UK's industrial development and makes a major contribution to debates over the industrial strategy and the position of manufacturing within industrialized economies.
