Book excerpt: As a parent, you want your children to grow up to become self-motivated, financially savvy, contributing members of society who maintain a deeply satisfying adult life. This is why it is essential to “bratproof” your children against turning into spoiled, egotistical materialists who feel entitled to misbehave and take their lives for granted. This book will help you raise emotionally healthy kids who will grow to become mature, well-rounded adults. Protect your children from the potentially negative influences of a life of privilege and blinding effects of America’s abject consumerism by instilling these seven positive character traits: • High self-esteem • Joy and optimism • Serenity • Hard work and thrift • Loving kindness • Forgiveness • Integrity These will help give your children a sense of purpose while providing direction and clarity to their lives. Instead of seeking guidance through wealth or a misplaced notion of superiority, your children will develop a strong “work ethic” centered on selflessness, sacrifice, and ambition. This book offers simple, practical strategies you can integrate into daily parenting to help you effectively raise your child. A vital precept of this work is how to instill an obligation of financial responsibility in your son or daughter, and protecting your wealth from being decimated because they are unprepared for the financial realities of life. The book’s clear-cut analysis of the fundamentals of wealth transfer, discussion of the use of trusts, and detailed instruction regarding how to build a lasting legacy through charitable donations prepares you to discuss these complex topics with your advisors as well as your inheritors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia is a state torn by vicious and prolonged conflicts which, over recent years, have claimed tens of thousands of lives and left nearly a million people displaced. Diverse as they are, these conflicts are sustained and exacerbated by a set of common factors including the role of the state’s army, the extreme development gap between the island of Java and most of the outer regions, the effect of the government’s policy of transmigrasi (forced migration), and its political manipulation of religion. This Report gives the historical background to the current conflicts, starting with an overview of the recent history of Indonesia. It then focuses on two of the main conflicts, in Aceh and Maluku, highlighting the factors that provoke and prolong the bloodshed. The Report ends with a look at the current reforms and a discussion of the many issues facing Indonesia today. The Report also offers a set of recommendations aimed at supporting peaceful solutions and respect for the human rights of all the population.

Book excerpt: Much has been written on the human rights relevance and impacts of the policies and activities of the World Bank and IMF --or International Financial Institutions (IFIs). However while many of the human rights-based critiques of the Bank and Fund purport to link broadly defined reforms with obligations under international human rights law, rarely has this been carried out through a rigorous and in-depth application of international legal rules governing the proper interpretation of the institutions' mandates, and rarely have the policy consequences and practical possibilities for human rights integration been explored in any detail. These are the principal gaps that the present book aims to fill, by reference to a sample of the IFIs' most important and controversial contemporary activities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topics of unemployment, underemployment, wage trends and patterns, and the relationship between poverty and the labour market are of interest to all policy makers, researchers, academics and journalists concerned with economic development. This book traces the evolution of the Indonesian labour market between the early 1970s and late 2000s. This entails a (a) review of macroeconomic policies and their employment impact; (b) review of unemployment and underemployment trends; (c) review of wage trends and living standards; (d) relationship between poverty, inequality and the labour market; and (e) labour market regulations, employment and the business environment. The book comes up with a number of policy-relevant findings. Macroeconomic policies, particularly inflation targeting in the 2000-2007 period, have not been conducive to employment generation. The assumption that unemployment is an appropriate indicator of labour market performance and, more importantly, that it is closely aligned with poverty, is shown to be inaccurate. Sustained real wage growth in the twenty-year period before the 1997 financial crisis is contrasted with the lack of improvement since then, a period otherwise of respectable economic growth by international standards. The predicted adverse consequences of sweeping labour market regulations in 2000-2007 on properly measured employment, unemployment and labour costs did not materialize, mainly because of low compliance. It seems that a restrictive macroeconomic framework has been more constraining for employment growth than the perceived labour market rigidity during the post-crisis period. The book concludes with an evaluation of several ‘reactive’ and ‘proactive’ labour market policies. Though these are complementary, policy makers in Indonesia have probably put too much emphasis on reactive policies such minimum wage and severance pay, and not enough on proactive policies aimed at creating an adaptable and skilled workforce.

Book excerpt: This publication offers a framework for the empowerment of people living in poverty throughout the world that concentrates on increasing people's freedom of choice and action to shape their own lives. Based on analysis of practical experiences, the book identifies four key elements to support empowerment: information, inclusion and participation, improved accountability and local organisational capacity. This framework is then applied to five areas of action to improve development effectiveness: provision of basic services, improved local governance, improved national governance, pro-poor market development, and access to justice and legal aid. It also offers twenty 'tools and practices' which concentrate on a wide-range of topics to support the empowerment of the poor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global economic system is experiencing a profound period of rapid change. The emergence of globalised production and distribution systems, which bring together diverse constellations of economic actors through a complex regime of global corporate governance, state regulation and new international divisions of labour, demands corresponding and innovative explanatory models. Global value chains (GVCs) and global production networks (GPNs) have been particularly useful as conceptual frameworks for understanding the global market engagement of firms, regions and nations. This book examines the rise of GVCs and GPNs as dominant features of the international political economy. It brings together leading thinkers in the field and sets out new directions for future scholarship in understanding the contemporary global economic system. In doing so, this book makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the international political economy and the global economic system in the post-Washington Consensus era of contemporary capitalism. This book was published as a special issue of the Review of International Political Economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available in paperback, this Handbook provides a comprehensive analysis of the major themes that have defined the politics of Southeast Asia. It provides a comprehensive and cutting-edge examination of this important subject. The introductory chapter provides an overview of the theoretical and ideological themes that have dominated the study of the region's politics and presents the different ways the complex politics of the region have been understood. The contributions by leading scholars in the field cover a range of broad questions about the dynamics of politics. The Handbook analyses how the dominant political and social coalitions of the region were forged in the Cold War era, and assesses the complex processes of transition towards various forms of democratic politics. How institutions and systems of governance are being forged in an increasingly global environment is discussed and whether civil society in Southeast Asia has really evolved as an independent sphere of social and political activity. The Handbook examines how national governments are dealing with growing tensions within the region as matters such as labour, human rights and the environment spill beyond national boundaries, and how they are establishing a place in the new global framework. By engaging the Southeast Asian experience more firmly with larger debates about modern political systems, the Handbook is an essential reference tool for students and scholars of Political Science and Southeast Asian studies.

Book excerpt: Indonesia has the second largest expanse of tropical moist forests in the world: about 78 per cent of its land mass is classified as forest land. These forests are important to Indonesia for their economic and social significance and to the global community for their biodiversity and as a carbon sink. The main pressures on the forests come from logging, degradation from forest concessions and plantations, rural consumption, and forest fires. This case study is one of six evaluations of the implementation of the World Bank's 1991 Forest Strategy.
