Book excerpt: Limited reserves of fossil fuels and their negative environmental effects impose significant problems in our energy security and sustainability. Consequently, researchers are looking for renewable energy sources, for instance solar and geothermal energy, to meet the energy demands of a growing world population. However, terrestrial solar energy is a dilute resource per footprint area and is intermittent showing substantial variability depending on the season, time of the day, and location. Nowadays, the use of geothermal energy for power generation is attracting favourable attention because, unlike other types of renewable energy, it is independent of weather and seasons and can achieve high-load-factor power generation all year round. CO2 emissions are as low as those for nuclear power. Moreover, geothermal energy is both abundant and, in practical terms, unlimited. Japan, with its many volcanoes and hot springs, has great prospective for geothermal power generation. Geothermal power generation is also well established in the U.S., the Philippines, Mexico, and Indonesia. In topical years, Iceland and Kenya have been mainly active in the introduction of geothermal power generation. This book `Solar and Geothermal Energy¿ presents the status of energy needs and renewables, potential, utilization and the importance of geothermal energy. It also gives a comparison between geothermal energy and solar energy sources regarding environmental issues. It continues with novel technologies of producing organic fuels through solar heating, geothermal energy techniques, new types of photovoltaic cells, long term use of thermal solar power plants, the efficiency of thermal storage and applications of the Solar power. Therefore, it is expected that geothermal energy and solar energy development will significantly speed up in the future. The overall approach is interdisciplinary, covering the economic, social, and environmental and policy issues from the point of research on solar and geothermal energy. It also tackles the physical and engineering aspects. The book will, therefore, strongly appeal to non-specialist readers who wish to improve their understanding of this multifaceted, attractive and increasingly important subject.

Book excerpt: "Raven's 8th edition of Environment offers more detailed content than the Visualizing text for a better understanding and integration of the core environmental systems and to view and analyze the role those systems play. Shorter, but still comprehensive coverage focuses on ethical decision making and key local environmental science issues, requiring readers to think critically about the course material outside of the classroom. Other features include brief text in the comprehensive segment; extensive chapter pedagogy to help reinforce the systems approach; more opportunities to think critically about the how systems intersect and fit together; and new data interpretation questions at the end of each chapter"--

Book Synopsis Geothermal, Wind and Solar Energy Applications in Agriculture and Aquaculture by : Jochen Bundschuh

This book was released on 2017-08-02 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The agri-food chain consumes about one third of the world’s energy production with about 12% of it for crop production and nearly 80% for processing, distribution, retail, preparation and cooking. The agri-food chain also accounts for 80-90% of total global freshwater use where 70% alone is for irrigation. Additionally, on a global scale, freshwater production consumes nearly 15% of the entire energy production. It can therefore be argued that making agriculture and the agri-food supply chain independent from fossil fuel use has a huge potential to contribute to global food security and climate protection not only for the next decades but also for the coming century. Provision of secure, accessible and environmentally sustainable supplies of water, energy and food must thus be a priority. One of the major objectives of the world’s scientists, farmers, decisions makers and industrialists is to overcome the present dependence on fossil fuels in the agro-food sector. This dependency increases the volatility of food prices and affects economic access to sustenance. This book provides a critical review of recent developments in solar, wind and geothermal energy applications in agriculture and the agro-food sector such as processing, distribution, retail, preparation and cooking.
