Download or read book A Substitute for Victory written by Rosemary Foot and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After more than two years of bitter negotiations during which combatants and civilians continued to suffer casualties, the Korean armistice was concluded in July 1953. Focusing on the Americans' formulation of negotiating positions and on their attempts to coordinate political goals with military tactics, Rosemary Foot here charts the tortuous path to peace and offers a new explanation for the agonizing length of the talks. She also takes into account the role of the Western allies and the Indian, South Korean, North Korean, and Chinese governments as she examines the complex international setting in which the armistice took place.

Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of the Korean War by : Paul M. Edwards
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Korean War written by Paul M. Edwards and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2010-06-10 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Korean War has often been regarded as a forgotten war, although that is certainly unfair. It was, if anything, a rather crucial war within the ambit of the Cold War, started by North Korea in 1950 and, although the bulk of the fighting was over by 1954, peace has never been concluded and the two sides still face off over the demilitarized zone. On the other side of the zone is South Korea, which has since become a very prosperous and democratic country, while North Korea has achieved relatively little. So, that war is certainly not forgotten by the Koreans. And, given the large number of deaths and casualties, it is still remembered by many in the United States and other allies, as well as China and the Soviet Union. This Historical Dictionary of the Korean War, now in its second edition, does much to jolt our memory and inform us about the war. This is done first in a lengthy chronology, tracking the war but also the path to war and what happened after. The introduction covers the war as a whole, trying to make sense of it. The dictionary section provides all of the necessary details on significant persons, places and events, battles and other engagements, military units and material, as well as the political, economic and social background. There are also maps and a list of acronyms. This is really the ideal source for information, in addition to which, it also has an extensive bibliography.

Book Synopsis The Interrogation Rooms of the Korean War by : Monica Kim
Download or read book The Interrogation Rooms of the Korean War written by Monica Kim and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional histories of the Korean War have long focused on violations of the thirty-eighth parallel, the line drawn by American and Soviet officials in 1945 dividing the Korean peninsula. But The interrogation rooms of the Korean War presents an entirely new narrative, shifting the perspective from the boundaries of the battlefield to inside the interrogation room. Upending conventional notions of what we think of as geographies of military conflict, Monica Kim demonstrates how the Korean War evolved from a fight over territory to one over human interiority and the individual human subject, forging the template for the U.S. wars of intervention that would predominate during the latter half of the twentieth century and beyond. Kim looks at how, during the armistice negotiations, the United States and their allies proposed a new kind of interrogation room: one in which POWs could exercise their "free will" and choose which country they would go to after the ceasefire. The global controversy that erupted exposed how interrogation rooms had become a flashpoint for the struggles between the ambitions of empire and the demands for decolonization, as the aim of interrogation was to produce subjects who attested to a nation's right to govern. The complex web of interrogators and prisoners -- Japanese-American interrogators, Indian military personnel, Korean POWs and interrogators, and American POWs -- that Kim uncovers contradicts the simple story in U.S. popular memory of "brainwashing" during the Korean War.

It traces the roots of independent India’s foreign policy from the Partition and its fallout, its nascent years under Nehru, and non-alignment to the influence of economic liberalization and globalization. The volume delves into the underlying reasons of persistent problems confronting India’s foreign policy-makers, as well as foreign-policy interface with defence and domestic policies. This book will be indispensable to students, scholars and teachers of South Asian studies, international relations, political science, and modern Indian history.
Download or read book The Korean War written by Stanley Sandler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An interpretative history of the Korean War. The text examines the war within the broader context of Korea's history, offering an analysis of the course of the war, and assessing the role of both North and South Korea and the allied forces in the conflict. The study goes beyond the battlefield, to evaluate the contribution of the UN naval forces and the impact of the war on the homefront. Issues such as defectors, opposition to the war, POWs and the media are explored and original research concerning the war's origins and development is incorporated from Soviet archives. This work should prove to be of value to students and scholars of 20th-century history, particularly, those concerned with American and Pacific history.
