Book Synopsis Battles of the Red River War by : J. Brett Cruse
Download or read book Battles of the Red River War written by J. Brett Cruse and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-03 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Battles of the Red River War unearths a long-buried record of the collision of two cultures. In 1874, U.S. forces led by Col. Ranald S. Mackenzie carried out a surprise attack on several Cheyenne, Comanche, and Kiowa bands that had taken refuge in the Palo Duro Canyon of the Texas panhandle and destroyed their winter stores and horses. After this devastating loss, many of these Indians returned to their reservations and effectively brought to a close what has come to be known as the Red River War, a campaign carried out by the U.S. Army during 1874 as a result of Indian attacks on white settlers in the region. After this operation, the Southern Plains Indians would never again pose a coherent threat to whites’ expansion and settlement across their ancestral homelands. Until now, the few historians who have undertaken to tell the story of the Red River War have had to rely on the official records of the battles and a handful of extant accounts, letters, and journals of the U.S. Army participants. Starting in 1998, J. Brett Cruse, under the auspices of the Texas Historical Commission, conducted archeological investigations at six battle sites. In the artifacts they unearthed, Cruse and his teams found clues that would both correct and complete the written records and aid understanding of the Indian perspectives on this clash of cultures. Including a chapter on historiography and archival research by Martha Doty Freeman and an analysis of cartridges and bullets by Douglas D. Scott, this rigorously researched and lavishly illustrated work will commend itself to archeologists, military historians and scientists, and students and scholars of the Westward Expansion.

Download or read book India's Wars written by Arjun Subramaniam and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India’s armed forces play a key role in protecting the country and occupy a special place in the Indian people’s hearts, yet standard accounts of contemporary Indian history rarely have a military dimension. In India’s Wars, serving Air Vice Marshal Arjun Subramaniam seeks to rectify that oversight by giving India’s military exploits their rightful place in history. Subramaniam begins India’s Wars with a frank call to reinvigorate the study of military history as part of Indian history more generally. Part II surveys the development of the India’s army, navy, and air force from the early years of the modern era to 1971. In Parts III and IV, Subramaniam considers conflicts from 1947 to 1962 as well as conflicts with China in 1962 and Pakistan in 1965 and 1971. Part V concludes by assessing these conflicts through the lens of India’s ancient strategist, Kautilya, who is revered in India as much as Sun Tzu is in China. Not merely a wide-ranging historical narrative of India’s military performance in battle, India’s Wars also offers a strategic, operational, and human perspective on the wars fought by independent India’s armed forces. Subramaniam highlights possible ways to improve the synergy between the three services, and argues in favor of the declassification of historical material pertaining to national security. The author also examines the overall state of civil-military relations in India, leadership within the Indian armed forces, as well as training, capability building, and other vitally important issues of concern to citizens, the government, and the armed forces. This objective and critical analysis provides policy cues for the reinvigoration of the armed forces as a critical tool of statecraft and diplomacy. Readers will come away from India’s Wars with a greater understanding of the international environment of war and conflict in modern India. Laced with veterans’ intense experiences in combat operations, and deeply researched and passionately written, it unfolds with surprising ease and offers a fresh perspective on independent India’s history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the horrors that blackened the uprising of 1857, none could match the atrocities committed at Kanpur. In Kanpur, 1857 - part of a new series of books on India's historic battles - historian Andrew Ward gives an unblinking account of the siege of the entrenchment into which the European community fled when the town's four native regiments rebelled, the massacre at Sati Chaura Ghat, and the hacking to death of the surviving Europeans. Their slaughter would exacerbate the savage and indiscriminate killings the British were already carrying out, burning villages and condemning thousands of locals to flogging, degradation and the gallows. This richly illustrated field guide draws on decades of research to depict the pitched battles, and the acts of heroism and sacrifice on both sides that were subsumed by campaigns of atrocity and terror.

Download or read book Battles of the New Republic written by Prashant Jha and published by Hurst. This book was released on 2014-01-12 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Battles of the New Republic: A Contemporary History of Nepal is a story of Nepal's transformation from war to peace, monarchy to republic, a Hindu kingdom to a secular state, and a unitary to a potentially federal state. Part-reportage, part-history, part-analysis, part-memoir, and part-biography of the key characters, the book breaks new ground in political writing from the region. With access to the most powerful leaders in the country as well as diplomats, it gives an unprecedented glimpse into Kathmandu's high politics. But this is coupled with ground-level reportage on the lives of ordinary citizens of the hills and the plains, striving for a democratic, just and equitable society. It tracks the hard grind of political negotiations at the heart of the instability in Nepal. It traces the rise of a popular rebellion, its integration into the mainstream, and its steady decline. It investigates Nepal's status as a partly-sovereign country, and reveals India's overwhelming role. It examines the angst of having to prove one's loyalties to one's own country, and exposes the Hindu hill upper-caste dominated power structures. Battles of the New Republic is a story of the deepening of democracy, of the death of a dream, and of that fundamental political dilemma - who exercises power, to what end, and for whose benefit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city of Lucknow was the epicentre of the uprising of 1857. In Lucknow, 1857 - part of a new series of books on India's historic battles - historian Rosie Llewellyn-Jones examines the conflict in detail, from the British annexation of Awadh to the Indian response nad the subsequent revolt by sepoys. The defeat of a unit of the East India Company's army at Chinhat led immediately to the siege of the extensive British Residency in the heart of the city. Here, nearly 3,000 people - British, Indian and Anglo-Indian - held out for four and a half months. The winter saw huge defensive barricades being built around Lucknow, but with their superior firepower, the British recapture was the inevitable outcome. This richly illustrated field guide draws on Llewellyn-Jones's intimate knowledge fo the city to paint a vivid picture of the events that unfolded in this historic urban battlefield.

Book Synopsis The American Indian Wars by : John William Tebbel
Download or read book The American Indian Wars written by John William Tebbel and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the white man came, the vast region that is now the United States was inhabited by one million Native Americans, organized into six hundred distinct societies and scattered from the desolate ice wastes of the Far North to the hot swamps of the South; from the great forests of the East to the plains and deserts of the West. The first meetings between the Natives and white men in the southeast and along the Atlantic coast were not important historically in themselves, but they kindled the sparks that were to burn savagely for hundreds of years. The Native nations, living in peace and prosperity for the most part, despite intermittent but limited intertribal warfare, learned that the white invaders could not be trusted, and that their object was not the peaceful intercourse of trade, which the Natives offered them, but flagrant conquest. After four centuries of nearly continuous warfare, from the fifteenth to twentieth centuries, the Native Americans have been reduced numerically to less than 400,000, with their lands gone and their homes a series of reservations in, for the most part, the western United States. This book tells the story of their battle against the invaders of their land, and the price they were to pay for their ultimate defeat. Book jacket.
