Book excerpt: This translation of Horst Krger's book in German brings to the English reading public a pioneer work on the relationship between the Indian National Movement and the World Working-Class Movement down to the outbreak of World War I. It is an important fact that the emergence of the Second International and the Indian National Congress were practically simultaneous and Krger studied in detail how the two streams came together. His detailed work deals frankly with the vision and the limitations on both sides. This is an area to which both historians of India's freedom struggle and of general labour history have not paid adequate attention, though the early Indian proximity to socialist thought and the importance of India for the consciences of early European socialists are important matters in their own right.

Book excerpt: Taking as an example the encounter of Marxism with nationalism in colonial India, explores how the two ideas became inextricably intertwined in much of the colonial world. Critically examines political documents to trace how people devoted to socialism came to see nationalism as the essential feature of the non-west, and how that conception changed Marxism in India and throughout the world. Book excerpt: Proletarian and Gendered Mass Migrations connects the 19th- and 20th-century labor migrations and migration systems in global transcultural perspective. It emphasizes macro-regional internal continuities or discontinuities and interactions between and within macro-regions. The essays look at migrant workers experiences in constraining frames and the options they seize or constraints they circumvent. It traces the development from 19th-century proletarian migrations to industries and plantations across the globe to 20th- and 21st-century domestics and caregiver migrations. It integrates male and female migration and shows how women have always been present in mass migrations. Studies on historical development over time are supplemented by case studies on present migrations in Asia and from Asia. A systems approach is combined with human agency perspectives. Cordell, Michael Douglass, Christiane Harzig, Dirk Hoerder, Muhamad Nadratuzzaman Hosen, Hassène Kassar, Kamel Kateb, Amarjit Kaur, Kiranjit Kaur, Gijs Kessler, Akram Khater, Elizabeth A. Book excerpt: The book presents the history of our great nation from the earliest times to the 7th century ad when the last of the Hindu emperors, Harshavardhana, ruled over a major part of India. The author has presented the chequered history in a brief manner, and with meticulous regard to authenticity of facts. He has deftly touched upon differing views on controversial matters, pinpointing the most likely scenario in an objective manner. The book meets the long-felt need of a nationalist, yet independent, appraisal of our past in a concise manner. It avoids the preconceived notions of foreign historians and their blind followers, at the same time without attempting undue glorification of the past. The book is certainly a laudable attempt to bring our glorious heritage alive!

This book was released on 2022-11-29 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the global circulation of Marxism seen from one of its most highly charged sites: Calcutta in India. Building on but also revising existing approaches to global intellectual history, the book presents the circulation of Marxism through Calcutta as a historically-sited problem of mass mediation. Using tools from media studies, the book explores the way that Marxism was presented to the public, the technologies used, and the meanings of Marxism in twentieth-century Calcutta. Demonstrating how the Popular Front was split between the so-called 'people's group' and those whom were called 'intellectuals', the book argues that the people's group generally identified themselves as Marxists and preferred audio-visual media such as theatre, while the so-called intellectuals privileged academic rigour and print media, usually referring to themselves as Marxians. Thus, the author reveals a polyphony of Marxisms in the Popular Front. Tracing Marxism back to the Bengal Renaissance and the Swadeshi and Naxal movements, this book shows how debate around the meaning of 'Marxism' continued throughout the 1970s in Calcutta, and eventually engendered the historiographical movement that has come to be known as Subaltern Studies.
