Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Currency and Banking Problems The attention which the study of Economics ii? all its branches is now receiving dates from quite recent times. It is, therefore, more academic than practical in character. The much talked of man in the street has still but the haziest notions about the nature and scope of the science, which, alone perhaps among the liberal sciences, concerns most intimately the everyday life of all human beings. Whether professed economist or not we are all interested and concerned to know why prices fluctuate; incomes rise or fall; taxes are imposed or repealed. But, until quite recently, the men who would be best qualified to analyse and explain these phenomena studiously avoided any attempt which would make them suspected of any leanings towards academic discussion. If the science as a whole is thus treated with indifference, if not contempt, we can hardly expect its more specialised branches to receive greater attention, however closely they touch our ordinary relations in life. It is true, indeed, that certain branches of the economic- science did receive a great deal of attention long before the science as such was formulated; and among these branches the place of honour belongs by right and by tradition to finance public as well as private. But the professors of these branches in the bygone times were all practical statesmen and financiers, whose greatness is too well established by now not to admit that they acted most frequently by the rule of thumb methods, leaving little room for the broad and well-conceived generalisation science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Currency and Finance When all but the last of the following chapters were already in type, I was offered a seat on the Royal Commission (1913) on Indian Finance and Currency. If my book had been less far advanced, I'should, of course, have delayed publication until the Commission had reported, and my opinions had been more fully formed by the discussions of the Commission and by the evidence placed before it. In the circumstances, however, I have decided to publish immediately what I had already written, without the addition of certain other chapters whichhad been projected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Indian Finance: Currency and Banking This book is designed to furnish a description and criticism of the existing currency system in India. I have also dealt with certain subjects which are more or less directly connected with the currency question, such as Banking, the State Bank, the Railway Policy, the Public Debt, etc. Part of this book has appeared in the form of articles in the Modern Review, the East and West, the Commonweal and the Statist (London), and I cordially thank the editors of these periodicals for their permission to reprint the same. The appendices contain the full text of Sir James Bigbie's Note of dissent, summary of the Report of the Royal Commission on Indian Finance and Currency, the evidence, and extracts from the criticisms of the Report by Professor Nicholson and "Asiaticus." A bibliography is also added. The difficulties of the subject are very real to its writer, who has consequently aimed earnestly at clearness, risking platitude and iteration to achieve it. Its shortcomings will be pardoned, by considerate readers, on the ground of the limited leisure in which it was written. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Future of Exchange and the Indian Currency This book is written for readers in India, and everything is expressed from the Indian point of view. It is not intended to be a scientific treatise, nor in any sense an academic discussion of currency and exchange; neither is it a popular exposition of the subject. It is designed more especially for the information and assistance of business men in India, for those engaged in public affairs, and for all who take a keen and understanding interest in the problems of exchange. At first my intention was to limit the book to an attempt to forecast the probable course of exchange during the next year or two; and the first eight chapters were written with that purpose. Continued study of the subject led to the alteration of my views as to the permanent policy which ought to be adopted in regard to exchange; and I seemed to arrive at conclusions of some novelty and importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from India and the Empire: A Consideration of the Tariff Problem In the following pages reference is made more than once to the progress achieved in recent years by Germany and the United States of America. From all appearances Germany is now approaching a period of financial stress, whilst the United States are already involved in a monetary crisis. It is to be expected, therefore, that superficial critics will point triumphantly to these facts as evidence of the unsoundness of a scientific commercial State policy as compared to the partially free import tariff system of the United Kingdom. This is not the place to enter upon a consideration of monetary or financial problems suffice it to say that all well-informed students of the currencies and money markets of the world will readily recognise that the pre sent financial situations in Germany and the United States (to make no mention of the con ditions prevailing in France and the United Kingdom) are in no way connected with the fiscal policies of the nations concerned. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Money Problem: Or Our First and Last Great Struggle John defines all the evil that is in the world to be the lust of the esh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. Now, was not the tree with its fruit a temptation to these three phases of evil? In the first place, it was seen to be good for food, a temptation to the desire of the esh; and, in the second place, that it was pleasant to the eyes, a temptation to the desire or lust of the eyes; and, thirdly, a tree to be desired to make one wise, a temptation to the pride of life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Money Problem, Vol. 1 Popular government calls for clear think ing and sound reasoning on the part of the people. In a period like the present, when the action of the people will be so fraught with big consequences to the welfare and honor of the country, there is especial need for the exercise of these faculties. It is im portant to recognize the true causes of the depression from which we have been suffer ing, and to realize fully that they are not of local origin and are not capable of local remedy. The inadequate explanations of our present condition generally offered, par ticularly the plea of overproduction, leave the farmer entirely without hope. He knows very well that South America, Australia, South Africa and India, to whose compe tition he is repeatedly told the present low prices of his product are solely due, have no intention of abandoning agriculture, and that, if this is the true explanation of his unhappy condition, nothing but public repudiation will save him from private ruin. The depression from which the world has been suffering has an international cause, which can be clearly defined. What is im portant is that this cause is rapidly disap pearing and better times are close at hand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
