Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The changing situation in Myanmar creates new opportunities for deepening India-Myanmar relations. Owing to its strategic position, Myanmar is connecting Asia’s three big markets – ASEAN, China and India. Myanmar forms a land-bridge connecting South Asia with Southeast Asia. But, country’s underdeveloped infrastructure, institutional and business environment seriously limit participation of Myanmar into the global economy. However, Myanmar has the potential to become another dynamic growth centre of Asia if it develops a stronger and improved connectivity with the neighbouring countries. Opening-up and strengthening the connectivity with neighbouring countries such as India would also speed-up its development process. We should see connectivity through Myanmar as crucial for India’s Look East Policy and deepening economic integration with ASEAN, China and beyond. This article deals with physical connectivity links between India and Myanmar. Specifically, it presents current status of all major modes of transportation links between India and Myanmar, and discusses the challenges and prospects. Besides, it also presents Myanmar’s selected connectivity projects with neighbouring China and Thailand. Finally, this study draws an action plan for implementation of connectivity projects in Myanmar.

With the process of democratic transition in Myanmar since 2011 and the ongoing Rohingya crisis, issues related to cross-border insurgency are one of the most important factors that determine bilateral ties between the two neighboring countries. The volume discusses a diverse range of themes – historical dimensions of cooperation; contested territories, resistance and violence in India–Myanmar borderlands; ethnic linkages; political economy of India–Myanmar cooperation; and Act East Policy – to examine the prospects and challenges of the strategic partnership between India and Myanmar, and analyzes further possibilities to move forward. The chapters further look at cross-border informal commercial exchanges, public health, population movements, and problems of connectivity and infrastructure projects. Comprehensive, topical and with its rich empirical data, the volume will be useful to scholars and researchers of political studies, international relations, security studies, foreign policy, contemporary history, and South Asian studies as well as government bodies and think tanks.

Book excerpt: Twenty years ago, India launched its "Look East" policy. For most of those 20 years, Myanmar's isolation, mistrust between India and its neighbors, and poor infrastructure connectivity hindered the development of links between South and Southeast Asia. With Myanmar's tentative opening and improved relations between India and Bangladesh, an opportunity exists for India to boost trade and security ties with mainland and maritime Southeast Asia. And the United States, during President Barack Obama's second term, is committed to rebalancing toward Asia, with India playing a pivotal role. With these facts in mind, CSIS presents key recommendations in the areas of diplomacy and security, infrastructure and energy, and enhancing people-to-people collaboration among India, ASEAN, and the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is centred on the role of the triangular interactions among communities, educational sectors, and academic diplomacy in facilitating peaceful societal change by evaluating the common challenges in India, Myanmar, and Thailand. It analyses urban poverty, religious freedom, ethnic diversity, women’s rights, development and regional partnership, civil-military relations, and human security in democratic transition and explores in-depth the societal issues from local and international perspectives paying special attention to the protection of ‘rights’ and promotion of ‘security’ in these societies. The book highlights that the continuous application of knowledge across borders and the promotion of international norms are essential tools in enabling social transformations from the bottom. In addition, the contributors promote further discussion on both the process and the outcome from action research projects that shape the lives of the local people and their communities. The book therefore contributes to the existing literature by offering additional insights into the societies of India, Myanmar and Thailand for policy makers, social innovators, researchers, development analysts and planners and the general public including students.

Book excerpt: If understanding the links between environmental sustainability and equity is the most crucial and critical factor to expand human freedoms for the current and future generations, as envisaged by the 2011 UN Human Development Report, then connectivity is one of its core variables. Stressing the global connectivity through regional linkages is one of the foremost guidances for the future generations. At the fragmented regional level, focusing on South East Asia, India is trying to pragmatically implement this theoretical framework through various connectivity programs with Southeast Asian countries. As one of the most strong civilization states with greater capabilities and broader visions, India is certainly expected to surge ahead with this goal. This paper seeks to examine whether connectivity of India and Southeast Asia through Kaladan Project of India-Myanmar will prove beneficial or detrimental for the overall development and integration of the region from a global perspective, and whether it will be able to minimize the country-wise/region-wise disparity in the region, as envisaged by the UN Human Development Report.

The focus in this book is particularly on the so-called southern East - West Economic Corridor which consists of the connections between the southern part of Myanmar and the western part of the central region of Thailand. Between the Two Oceans of Indo-Pacific covers a diverse range of topics in the fields of geography, history, archaeology, international trade, tourism, migration and infrastructure for transport. This book is an effort to understand these for a better future for ASEAN as well as India. The findings of this book may help strengthen the ASEAN integration process on its way towards 2025.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the nearly 30 years of India–ASEAN relations from a contemporary perspective, identifies the reasons for India’s vibrant and significant relation with ASEAN and examines the cultural, economic, political and strategic linkages between India and ASEAN. The book projects the future of India–ASEAN relations in the face of the changing Indo-Pacific geopolitics and explores potential policies which could enhance the connection between India and Southeast Asian countries. Arguing that ASEAN is of primary importance to India, the book suggests that any successful outing in the Indo-Pacific would need a strong partnership with India. The book demonstrates how external powers influence ASEAN, with many of them supporting the centrality of ASEAN and its regional architecture in the broader Indo-Pacific. Chapters by experts in their fields present thematically specific analyses of political, defence, maritime and cultural aspects as well as the position of Northeast India in the India–ASEAN relations and assess the success and challenges of India’s ties with ASEAN in the context of the Look East and the Act East Policies. A reassessment of ASEAN–India relations past and present, this book will be of interest to academics and policy makers working in the field of International Relations, Asian Politics and South Asian Politics, in particular India’s Foreign Policy and Southeast Asian Politics.
