Book Synopsis Morphology and Lexical Semantics by : Rochelle Lieber
Download or read book Morphology and Lexical Semantics written by Rochelle Lieber and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-07-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morphology and Lexical Semantics explores the meanings of morphemes and how they combine to form the meanings of complex words, including derived words (writer, unionise), compounds (dog bed, truck driver) and words formed by conversion. Rochelle Lieber discusses the lexical semantics of word formation in a systematic way, allowing the reader to explore the nature of affixal polysemy, the reasons why there are multiple affixes with the same function and the issues of mismatch between form and meaning in word formation. Using a series of case studies from English, this book develops and justifies the theoretical apparatus necessary for raising and answering many questions about the semantics of word formation. Distinguishing between a lexical semantic skeleton that is featural and hierarchically organised and a lexical semantic body that is holistic, it shows how the semantics of word formation has a paradigmatic character.

Book Synopsis Law and Inflation by : Keith S. Rosenn
Download or read book Law and Inflation written by Keith S. Rosenn and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2015-09-10 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inflation is an economic phenomenon that has profound implications for lawyers and jurists, because the great bulk of our laws and legal doctrines have been formulated on the assumption that the value of money remains relatively stable. Inasmuch as such an assumption is no longer tenable in much of the world, it threatens the operation of our most basic legal institutions. In this book, Keith Rosenn shows how inflation affects legal documents like contracts—how it distorts credit transactions, suits for damages, and laws of taxation—and he tells how current economic practices can be adapted to reduce or eliminate the impact. He explores the possibility of using a comprehensive indexation scheme for coping with inflation. Although Rosenn recognizes the deficiencies of price indexes, he considers the practical and theoretical implications of indexation. His analysis is firmly grounded in a detailed examination of the experience of countries like Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, and Italy in adapting their legal institutions to the fact of inflation.

Book Synopsis Economic Adjustment and Exchange Rates in Developing Countries by : Sebastian Edwards
Download or read book Economic Adjustment and Exchange Rates in Developing Countries written by Sebastian Edwards and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of the attention paid exchange rates in recent economic debates on developing countries, relatively few studies have systematically analyzed in detail the various ramifications of exchange rate policy in these countries. In this new volume from the National Bureau of Economic Research, leading economists use rigorous models to tackle various exchange rate issues, while also illuminating policy implications that emerge from their analyses. The volume, divided into four main sections, addresses: the role of exchange rates in stabilization programs and the adjustment process; the importance of exchange rate policy during liberalization reform in developing countries; exchange rate problems relevant and unique to developing countries, illustrated by case studies; and the problems defining, measuring, and identifying determinants of real exchange rates. Authors of individual papers examine the relation between commercial policies and exchange rates, the role of exchange rate policy in stabilization programs, the effectiveness of devaluations as a policy tool, and the interaction between exchange rate terms of trade an capital flow. This research will not only prove crucial to our understanding of the role of exchange rates in developing countries, but will clearly set the standard for future work in the field.

Book Synopsis The Finance Bill 2008 by : Great Britain. Parliament. House of Lords. Select Committee on Economic Affairs
Download or read book The Finance Bill 2008 written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Lords. Select Committee on Economic Affairs and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report on the Finance Bill 2008 concentrates on three areas: capital gains tax (CGT); residence and domicile; and encouraging enterprise. It also considers two issues which cut across these and other topics: consultation and competitiveness. On consultation, there was disagreement between private sector witnesses who felt consultation on both CGT and residence and domicile had been very poorly handled and Treasury and Revenue & Customs witnesses who did not. The Committee feels there could have been earlier and more open consultation., especially as consultation is deemed to be a key part of getting tax policy right. The possible negative impact of the proposed residence and domicile regime on UK competitiveness concerns the Committee. On CGT the Committee makes a number of recommendations designed to restore the certainty and predictability which investors need. On residence and domicile the Committee criticises the fact that the Finance Bill was not complete at the time of publication. The Committee recommends the Government provides a statutory definition of UK residence. The report surveys the clauses which make changes to the tax rules for encouraging enterprise, but would like to see the case for changes being made and published. The overall impression is that the formulation of tax policy this year has been marked by uncertainty of direction, exacerbated by poor consultation leading to a concern that the tax system is no longer sustainable or predictable. The feeling that the system is unstable and subject to severe shocks cannot be good for the competitiveness of the UK economy.

Book Synopsis Reshaping Retirement Security by : Raimond Maurer
Download or read book Reshaping Retirement Security written by Raimond Maurer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-27 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The worldwide financial crisis has wrought deep changes in capital and labor markets, old-age retirement systems, and household retirement and consumption patterns. Confidence has been shaken in both the traditional defined benefit and defined contribution plans. Around the world, plan sponsors, fiduciaries, policymakers, and households have gained a new awareness of retirement risk. When pressed to reform post-crisis, many would recommend enhancing financial advice for plan participants, emphasizing flexibility and the positive effect of working another one or two years to make up for investment losses in the downturn. Adding to this is the continuing need for financial education, essential as the retirement system moves increasingly toward personal account pensions. Perhaps most important of all is the need for greater understanding of risk throughout the retirement security system, along with new approaches to re-engineering retirement pensions. This volume explores the lessons to be learnt for retirement planning and long-term financial security in view of the massive shocks to stock markets, labour markets, and pension plans resulting from the financial crisis. It aims to rethink retirement in the new economic era, including the resilience of defined contribution plans and how defined benefit plans reacted to the financial crisis.
