Download or read book Mumbet's Declaration of Independence written by Gretchen Woelfle and published by Carolrhoda Books ®. This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "All men are born free and equal." Everybody knows about the Founding Fathers and the Declaration of Independence in 1776. But the founders weren't the only ones who believed that everyone had a right to freedom. Mumbet, a Massachusetts enslaved person, believed it too. She longed to be free, but how? Would anyone help her in her fight for freedom? Could she win against the richest man in town? Mumbet was determined to try. Mumbet's Declaration of Independence tells her story for the first time in a picture book biography, and her brave actions set a milestone on the road toward ending slavery in the United States. "The case is fascinating, emphasizing the destructive irony at the heart of the birth of America and making Mumbet an active and savvy architect of her own release, and this is likely to spur much discussion." —The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

Download or read book Answering the Cry for Freedom written by Gretchen Woelfle and published by Boyds Mills Press. This book was released on 2016-11-04 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncover the lives of thirteen African-Americans who fought during the Revolutionary War. Even as American Patriots fought for independence from British rule during the Revolutionary War, oppressive conditions remained in place for the thousands of enslaved and free African Americans living in this country. But African Americans took up their own fight for freedom by joining the British and American armies; preaching, speaking out, and writing about the evils of slavery; and establishing settlements in Nova Scotia and Africa. The thirteen stories featured in this collection spotlight charismatic individuals who answered the cry for freedom, focusing on the choices they made and how they changed America both then and now. These individuals include: Boston King, Agrippa Hull, James Armistead Lafayette, Phillis Wheatley, Elizabeth "Mumbet" Freeman, Prince Hall, Mary Perth, Ona Judge, Sally Hemings, Paul Cuffe, John Kizell, Richard Allen, and Jarena Lee. Includes individual bibliographies and timelines, author note, and source notes.

Download or read book Matter and Mind written by Mario Bunge and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-14 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses two of the oldest and hardest problems in both science and philosophy: What is matter?, and What is mind? A reason for tackling both problems in a single book is that two of the most influential views in modern philosophy are that the universe is mental (idealism), and that the everything real is material (materialism). Most of the thinkers who espouse a materialist view of mind have obsolete ideas about matter, whereas those who claim that science supports idealism have not explained how the universe could have existed before humans emerged. Besides, both groups tend to ignore the other levels of existence—chemical, biological, social, and technological. If such levels and the concomitant emergence processes are ignored, the physicalism/spiritualism dilemma remains unsolved, whereas if they are included, the alleged mysteries are shown to be problems that science is treating successfully.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern Berkshire County in Western Massachusetts is a magical place. Some call it paradise. The special synergy that exists here between people and place has inspired remarkable residents for centuries. From Mohican John Konkapot to African American W.E.B. Du Bois, from novelist Catharine Sedgwick to mental health pioneer Agnes Gould, the Housatonic Valley and surrounding hills have proved to be a haven for inventors and industrialists, artists and activists, entrepreneurs, and educators. Stockbridge summer resident and legendary sculptor Daniel Chester French once said to a New York reporter, "I spend six months of the year up there, it is heaven." William Cullen Bryant, Norman Rockwell, Cyrus Field, William Stanley, Elizabeth Freeman (Mumbet), Laura Ingersoll Secord, and numerous other luminaries have all passed on to a different heavenly plane. Still, the Southern Berkshires continue to produce local legends and unsung heroes--folks like community activist Rachel Fletcher, Pastor Charles Van Ausdall, educator Mae Brown, and police chief Rick Wilcox. Book Synopsis The Eloquent Screen by : Gilberto Perez
Download or read book The Eloquent Screen written by Gilberto Perez and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lifetime of cinematic writing culminates in this breathtaking statement on film’s unique ability to move us Cinema is commonly hailed as “the universal language,” but how does it communicate so effortlessly across cultural and linguistic borders? In The Eloquent Screen, influential film critic Gilberto Perez makes a capstone statement on the powerful ways in which film acts on our minds and senses. Drawing on a lifetime’s worth of viewing and re-viewing, Perez invokes a dizzying array of masters past and present—including Chaplin, Ford, Kiarostami, Eisenstein, Malick, Mizoguchi, Haneke, Hitchcock, and Godard—to explore the transaction between filmmaker and audience. He begins by explaining how film fits into the rhetorical tradition of persuasion and argumentation. Next, Perez explores how film embodies the central tropes of rhetoric––metaphor, metonymy, allegory, and synecdoche––and concludes with a thrilling account of cinema’s spectacular capacity to create relationships of identification with its audiences. Although there have been several attempts to develop a poetics of film, there has been no sustained attempt to set forth a rhetoric of film—one that bridges aesthetics and audience. Grasping that challenge, The Eloquent Screen shows how cinema, as the consummate contemporary art form, establishes a thoroughly modern rhetoric in which different points of view are brought into clear focus.

Book Synopsis Mendelssohn in Performance by : Siegwart Reichwald
Download or read book Mendelssohn in Performance written by Siegwart Reichwald and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2008-09-25 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring many aspects of Felix Mendelssohn's multi-faceted career as musician and how it intersects with his work as composer, contributors discuss practical issues of music making such as performance space, instruments, tempo markings, dynamics, phrasings, articulations, fingerings, and instrument techniques. They present the conceptual and ideological underpinnings of Mendelssohn's approach to performance, interpretation, and composing through the contextualization of specific performance events and through the theoretic actualization of performances of specific works. Contributors rely on manuscripts, marked or edited scores, and performance parts to convey a deeper understanding of musical expression in 19th-century Germany. This study of Mendelssohn's work as conductor, pianist, organist, violist, accompanist, music director, and editor of old and new music offers valuable perspectives on 19th-century performance practice issues.
Book Synopsis Replicating Atonement by : Mischa Gabowitsch
Download or read book Replicating Atonement written by Mischa Gabowitsch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection examines what happens when one country’s experience of dealing with its traumatic past is held up as a model for others to follow. In regional and country studies covering Argentina, Canada, Japan, Lebanon, Rwanda, Russia, Turkey, the United States and former Yugoslavia, the authors look at the pitfalls, misunderstandings and perverse effects–but also the promise–of trying to replicate atonement. Going beyond the idea of a global or transnational memory, this book examines the significance of foreign models in atonement practices, and analyses the role of national governments, international organisations, museums, foundations, NGOs and public intellectuals in shaping the idea that good practices of atonement can be learned. The volume also demonstrates how one can productively learn from others by appreciating the complex and contested nature of atonement practices such as Germany’s, and also by finding the necessary resources in the history of one’s own country.
