Book Synopsis Teaching International Humanitarian Law at U.S. Law Schools by : Bjorn C. Sorenson
Download or read book Teaching International Humanitarian Law at U.S. Law Schools written by Bjorn C. Sorenson and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International humanitarian law (IHL) is a set of rules which seek, for humanitarian reasons, to limit the effects of armed conflict. It protects persons who are not or are no longer participating in the hostilities and restricts the means and methods of warfare. IHL is also known as the law of war or the law of armed conflict. In the aftermath of 9/11, IHL has begun to resonate more widely with students and faculty as a subject of relevance and interest at law schools throughout the United States. Many topics related to this important branch of law - such as treatment of persons detained due to armed conflict, as highlighted by the revelations of abuse at Abu Ghraib - have emerged at the forefront of debate and learning in academic circles and national discourse. Yet coverage of IHL in U.S. law schools is still limited and, while interest is growing, many schools have not actively or systematically accommodated that interest. In the fall of 2006, American University Washington College of Law Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (WCL) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Regional Delegation to the U.S. and Canada partnered to conduct research to assess the extent to which IHL is currently taught at accredited law schools in the United States, if at all, to gauge the level of interest in IHL and to identify specific ideas to increase coverage of the subject.

Download or read book Customary International Humanitarian Law written by Jean-Marie Henckaerts and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-03-03 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Customary International Humanitarian Law, Volume I: Rules is a comprehensive analysis of the customary rules of international humanitarian law applicable in international and non-international armed conflicts. In the absence of ratifications of important treaties in this area, this is clearly a publication of major importance, carried out at the express request of the international community. In so doing, this study identifies the common core of international humanitarian law binding on all parties to all armed conflicts. Comment Don:RWI.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International humanitarian law is the law that governs the conduct of participants during armed conflict. This branch of law aims to regulate the means and methods of warfare as well as to provide protections to those who do not, or who no longer, take part in the hostilities. It is one of the oldest branches of international law and one of enduring relevance today. The Oxford Guide to International Humanitarian Law provides a practical yet sophisticated overview of this important area of law. Written by a stellar line up of contributors, drawn from those who not only have extensive practical experience but who are also regarded as leading scholars of the subject, the text offers a comprehensive and authoritative exposition of the field. The Guide provides professionals and advanced students with information and analysis of sufficient depth to enable them to perform their tasks with understanding and confidence. Each chapter illuminates how the law applies in practice, but does not shy away from the important conceptual issues that underpin how the law has developed. It will serve as a first port of call and a regular reference work for those interested in international humanitarian law.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commissioned by UNESCO from the Henry Dunant Institute, this volume of essays lays the foundation for an international programme for the teaching of international humanitarian law within the framework of UNESCO's plan for the development of the teaching of human rights. Parts I and II deal with the development of humanitarian ideas and law within different schools of thought and cultural traditions; Part III with the law of armed conflict and Part IV with the application of international humanitarian law. It is hoped that the publication of this volume, which, in its original French edition, coincided with the 40th Anniversary of UNESCO and the International Year of Peace proclaimed in 1986 by the UN General Assembly, will reinforce the determination of the international community to achieve the aim of the founders of UNESCO, namely to construct the defences of peace in the minds of men.

Book Synopsis Schoolchildren as Propaganda Tools in the War on Terror by : Sonja C. Grover
Download or read book Schoolchildren as Propaganda Tools in the War on Terror written by Sonja C. Grover and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-03-19 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores in what ways both sides involved in the so-called war on terror are using schoolchildren as propaganda tools while putting the children's security at grave risk. The book explores how terrorists use attacks on education to attempt to destabilize the government while the government and the international aid community use increases in school attendance as an ostensible index of largely illusory progress in the overall security situation and in development. The book challenges the notion that unoccupied civilian schools are not entitled under the law of armed conflict to a high standard of protection which prohibits their use for military purposes. Also examined are the potential violations of international law that can occur when government and education aid workers encourage and facilitate school attendance, as they do, in areas within conflict-affected states such as Afghanistan where security for education is inadequate and the risk of terror attacks on education high.
Book Synopsis Development and Principles of International Humanitarian Law by : Jean Simon Pictet
Download or read book Development and Principles of International Humanitarian Law written by Jean Simon Pictet and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1985-09-30 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main aim of this book is to inquire into the system of norms regulating the 'internationalization' of internal conflicts. The traditional distinction between international & internal conflict, which entails different legal consequences, is in practice very difficult to detect due to the presence, in many instances, of elements typical of both situations. Through a careful & extraordinarily useful examination of all relevant cases of 'internationalized' internal conflict since 1956, the validity of the traditional framework of rules concerning foreign intervention in internal conflict is reassessed. At the same time, the applicability to these situations of the rules typical of international conflicts are analyzed with a view to providing the existence of a continuum between the two situations, not only as a matter of fact but also with respect to their legal regulation.
