Download or read book A Study on Suicide written by Jianjun Li and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book systematically presents and classifies the latest advances in suicide research in contemporary China, examines the status quo of suicides in China and analyzes the reasons for suicides among three high-risk groups, namely: rural females, teenagers, and the elderly. It reveals the deep-seated influence of traditional Chinese values and socio-cultural customs on suicide and puts forward a way to prevent suicide. This book argues that high suicide rates stem from flaws in the social fabric. Effectively reducing suicide rates and mitigating the damage done by suicide as a social disease is not only the responsibility of the state government, but also that of social, educational and medical professionals.
Book Synopsis China Review 1999 by : Chong Chor Lau
Download or read book China Review 1999 written by Chong Chor Lau and published by Chinese University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China has made great success in improving its foreign relations with other countries in 1998. Jiang Zemin's visit to the United States and Japan clearly showed that China would continually uphold its open-door policy and economic reform. It is significant to most economic analysts that China has still recorded 7.8% economic growth under the Asian financial crisis. China Review 1999, the ninth volume of this series, is an expert survey of China's major sectors of interest, which critically summarizes the development of the previous year in core chapters covering politics, the economy, and social change. This volume has several in-depth presentations on political and social-economic issues, such as the Sino-U.S. relations, Mainland-Taiwan relations, the economic performance of 1998 -- all major concerns to those interested in the development of the People's Republic. Additional studies describe rarely featured areas of Chinese society.

Book Synopsis Small Town China by : Beatriz Carrillo Garcia
Download or read book Small Town China written by Beatriz Carrillo Garcia and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2011-04-19 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While much has been written about rural migrant workers’ experiences in the big cities, population movements into China’s vast network of towns and small cities has been largely neglected. This book presents a detailed case study of rural migrant workers experiences in a small town in a north China county. The author explores the processes and institutions that enable or preclude the social inclusion of rural workers into the town’s socio-economic system. Inclusion and exclusion are assessed through an examination of rural workers’ immersion into the urban labour market, their access to welfare benefits and to social services, such as housing, education and health. The book proposes that outside the larger cities there are alternative accounts of urban social change and of the integration of rural migrant workers. It stresses the fact that the particular socio-economic structure of towns, where the state-owned share of the economy has been smaller and where consequently social and private forces have been more active, allowed for a more open inclusion of rural workers. Though shortcomings are still observed, the book suggests that China's transformation may not necessarily result in dysfunctional and socially polarized urban environments. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of China’s rural migrant workers, bottom-up urbanization and small town development, social policy, and more broadly on contemporary social change in China.
