Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent studies on indentation fracture in brittle materials, use of the cracks which form beneath a pointed indenter and grow stably with load has been suggested as a simple technique for the determination of fracture toughness (Kc). The applicability of this technique has been assessed by performing tests on a number of polycrystalline ceramics, glass-ceramics, and glasses which span a range of fracture toughness from 0.7 to 4.5 MN-3/2. Various sharp indenter geometries were tested and it was concluded that cracks produced with the Vickers indenter were the easiest to measure. The existing theories for calculating Kc from experimental measurements (crack length, load, etc.) have been evaluated and their applicability has been determined. The results demonstrate the usefulness of a Vickers pyramid in obtaining a qualitative ranking of Kc for a wide range of brittle materials. A number of practical problems associated with this technique are discussed.

Book Synopsis Indentation Fracture by : Robert F. Cook
Download or read book Indentation Fracture written by Robert F. Cook and published by Wiley-American Ceramic Society. This book was released on 2025-02-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive reference with demonstrations of advanced indentation fracture techniques in practical applications to enable better design and more efficient manufacturing Indentation Fracture describes and illustrates advanced applications of indentation fracture in evaluating strength, toughness, and related properties of brittle materials. The book enables better design, manufacture, performance, and reliability of brittle materials as elements in structural components. Emphasizing the practical applications of indentation fracture techniques, especially those of indentation-strength, the book builds on a development of indentation fracture mechanics to demonstrate clear quantitative comparisons and rankings of material fracture behavior, including the behavior of toughened materials. The book includes several case studies linking indentation fracture analyses and measurements to other phenomena including fragmentation cracking, edge chipping and dicing damage, scratching and the Mohs scale, and semiconductor grinding damage. Each case study highlights a different aspect of controlled flaw fracture measurements. The book enables readers to increase the utilization of glasses, ceramics, semiconductors, and similar brittle materials in load-bearing applications by demonstrating experimental indentation techniques to better characterize fracture. A primary focus of the book is demonstration of controlled flaw indentation-strength measurements. Written by an independent scientist with significant research contributions to the field, Indentation Fracture explores a range of topics including: Brittle fracture fundamentals, discussing equilibrium fractures on uniform and localized loading leading to the Griffith and Roesler equations Indentation strength variation, covering the effects of contact angle, spherical and flat punch contacts, and contacts in stressed and layered components Toughened materials strength observations in alumina, silicon nitride, glass ceramics, ferroelastics, and zirconia Strengths of silicon devices determined by wafer backgrinding, covering linear flaws in silicon, including single and multiple scratches, as well as linear, general, controlled, and grinding flaws Indentation Fracture is an essential reference on the subject for engineers across disciplines, nanotechnologists, geophysicists, and environmental scientists, along with graduate students in materials science and related programs of study.
Book Synopsis Fracture Toughness of Glass Using the Indentation Fracture Technique by : P. Magnusen
Download or read book Fracture Toughness of Glass Using the Indentation Fracture Technique written by P. Magnusen and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Half-penny shaped cracks called median vents are formed about indentations made with sharp indenters in brittle materials. Two fracture mechanics analyses for the formation of median cracks exist and constitute a basis upon which the fracture toughness (Kc) can be obtained from indentation fracture experiments. However, little attention has been directed toward assessing the applicability of indentation fracture as a method for determining Kc in brittle materials.

Book Synopsis Metal and Ceramic Based Composites by : S.T. Mileiko
Download or read book Metal and Ceramic Based Composites written by S.T. Mileiko and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-12-12 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern scientific and technological fields are frequently of an interdisciplinary nature, and the field of fibrous composites is no exception. Unlike fibre-reinforced plastics, the family of metal- and ceramic-based composites is still quite a new group of materials with a large variety of mechanical and physical properties. Up until now it has been difficult to produce these materials as the necessary technical information has not been well documented. The main purpose of this book is to link together fabrication, structure and properties chains, so as to clarify which structure provides the necessary properties, and how one can attain the correct composite structure. To this end, the book not only contains topics of a purely technical nature, but also a description of the failure mechanics of metal- and ceramic-matrix composites, as this is the key to understanding the structure-properties segment of the chain mentioned. The book is divided into three parts. Part I presents a general view of composites with the accent on metal- and ceramic-matrix composites. It also contains a brief description of modern fibres and composites and can be considered, at least for beginners, as a starting point for further study. Part II looks at the composite microstructures considered to be either optimal or reasonable in resisting a particular loading. Finally Part II describes a variety of mechanical, physical, and chemical potential for organizing these microstructures. Experimental data on technologies, material structures, and material properties are used throughout the book to support theoretical conclusions or to obtain important physical parameters.
