Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HOW TERRIBLY STRANGE INDEED: Seventy Is More Than Just a Number takes a deep dive into a single line in a 1968 song by Simon & Garfunkel. They describe two old men sitting together on a park bench, and sing sympathetically, “How terribly strange to be 70.” How exactly could two guys who were not yet 30 know this? And, more importantly, were they right? Roy Wepner, a baby boomer now in his mid-70s, tries to answer these questions here. Wepner delves into various aspects of life in one’s eighth decade to seek out some answers. Among the strange phenomena he explores are having middle-aged children; senior moments that last for hours; pants that are suddenly too long; the loss of a single step—or more; and being a “high risk” senior during a pandemic. Wepner also examines some strangely wonderful things about being in one’s 70s, such as the realization that nostalgia is even better than it used to be; the epiphany that boredom is preventable and curable; the growth in perspective that compensates for some loss of memory; the confirmation that old dogs really can learn new tricks; and—of course—grandchildren. This first-person narrative of life in one’s 70s will provide insight to not only those who have crossed the 70 year threshold, but also those who plan to do so, as well as millennials and members of Generation X who have not yet given up on figuring out their parents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eighteen years ago, the author had his first shock about the attitude of some of his colleagues towards meritocracy. Turning down the best job candidate was not something he could easily understand. He first thought it was an isolated problem, but he later realized that it was a common problem related to a wide and deep misunderstanding of Islamic values. Dr. Naceur Jabnoun examines how the values held by many Muslims are contributing to their underperformance. The book covers five categories of values, including core values, driving values, enabling values, performance values, and the regulating value of moderation. The book suggests measures to translate these values into actions. Join the author as he investigates the Muslim world, its failures, the message of Islam, and ways to forge a better future in What Went Wrong in the Muslim World?

Book excerpt: For years, the Jesuit labored over a small square of greenish copper hidden in the Dead Sea Scrolls. What had he found? The message he translated would make the tumultuous history of the Middle East look like a street fight in Hell's Kitchen. This copper square was no less than a one-way ticket through the pass of Megiddo, the place of Armageddon. FOREVER INDEED spans the centuries from the time of the Roman conquest of Judea in the First Century CE to the present. It joins lovers separated by millennia sharing common loves, common thoughts, and common emotions. Hearts and souls race across thousands of years to find each other in a love story that is forever, indeed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Something has gone seriously wrong with the American economy. The American economy has experienced considerable growth in the last 30 years. But virtually none of this growth has trickled down to the average American. Incomes have been flat since 1985. Inequality has grown, and social mobility has dropped dramatically. Equally troubling, these policies have been devastating to both American productivity and our long-term competitiveness. Many reasons for these failures have been proposed. Globalization. Union greed. Outsourcing. But none of these explanations can address the harsh truth that many countries around the world are dramatically outperforming the U.S. in delivering broad middle-class prosperity. And this is despite the fact that these countries are more exposed than America to outsourcing and globalization and have much higher levels of union membership. In What Went Wrong, George R. Tyler, a veteran of the World Bank and the Treasury Department, takes the reader through an objective and data-rich examination of the American experience over the last 30 years. He provides a fascinating comparison between the America and the experience of the “family capitalism" countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden. Over the last 30 years, they have outperformed the U.S. economy by the only metric that really matters—delivering better lives for their citizens. The policies adopted by the family capitalist countries aren't socialist or foreign. They are the same policies that made the U.S. economy of the 1950s and 1960s the strongest in the world. What Went Wrong describes exactly what went wrong with the American economy, how countries around the world have avoided these problems, and what we need to do to get back on the right track.

Book excerpt: It is not unusual for a festschrift to include offerings from several areas of study, but it is highly unusual for those areas to cross disciplinary lines. This book, in doing just that, is a testimony to Bob Abelson's impact on the disciplines of social psychology, artificial intelligence and cognitive science, and the applied areas of political psychology and decision-making. The contributors demonstrate that their association with Abelson, whether as students or colleagues, has resulted in an impressive intellectual cross-fertilization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The energy transition has begun. To succeed - to replace fossil fuels with wind and solar power - that process must be fair. Otherwise, mounting popular protest against wind farms will prolong carbon pollution and deepen the climate crisis. David Hughes examines that anti-industrial, anti-corporate resistance, drawing insights from a Spanish village surrounded by turbines. In the lives of these neighbours - freighted with centuries of exploitation - clean power and social justice fit together only awkwardly. Proposals for a green economy, the Green New Deal, or Europe's Green Deal require more effort. We must rethink aesthetics, livelihood, property, and, most essentially, the private nature of wind resources. Ultimately, the energy transition will be public and just, or it may not be at all

This book was released on 1997 with total page 977 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Al-Qur'an, the Guidance for mankind, is a unique translation of the Holy Qur'an in contemporary American English. It includes the Biography of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, his mission as a Prophet, his ranking as in the human history. Text is paragraphed by theme and theme is written in the margins on each page for easy reference. Its features include - (1) Field Testing the Communication of Divine Message: The unique feature of this translation is its field testing for over 3 1/2 years to improve the communication and understanding of the Divine Message. Translation passages were given to the New Muslim and Non-Muslim high school and college students for reading under the supervision of various Ulema (scholars). After reading, the person was asked to explain as to what he/she understood from the passage. If his/her understanding was the same as is in the Arabic Text of the Holy Qur'an then we concluded that we have been successful in conveying the Divine Message properly. If his/her understanding was different than what the Qur'anic verses were stating, we kept on rewording the translation until those verses were understood properly. It was tremendous patience on part of the participants. May Allah reward them all. (2) Simplicity: In this translation Simple Language and Direct Approach is used for appealing to the common sense of scholars and common people. (3) Understandability: There are no foot notes to refer and no commentary or lengthy explanations to read. All necessary explanations have been incorporated right there in the text with italic type setting to differentiate from the translation of the meanings of Qur'anic Arabic Text. (4) Outline of Pertinent Information: Before the start of each Srah, information relating to its Period of Revelation, Major Issues, Divine Laws and Guidance has been presented as an outline. Then a summary of the preceding events has been tabulated for the reader to understand the histo! rical background to grasp the full meaning of the Divine Message. (5) Reviews, Input and Approvals: This project was started in 1991 and initial draft completed in 1994. Then the Translation was sent to different Ulema (Scholars) in Town and throughout United States for their review and input. After their reviews and input it was sent to Jme Al-Azhar Al-Sharif in Egypt, Ummal Qur in Saudi Arabia and International Islamic University in Pakistan for their review, input and approval. This translation was published after their reviews and approvals.
