Book excerpt: An outstanding and spectacular example of the devastation which feral animals – pigs, goats and rabbits – can cause, and the ecological restoration which can be achieved with hard work and frequent risks. Access to this remote island was difficult and often dangerous and all materials had be unloaded from the boat onto slippery rocks, handled up the surrounding cliffs and back-packed across the island. Diverse eradication techniques, using swimming, rock-climbing and archery for inaccessible sites, removed the last of the feral grazers. Revegetation and faunal recovery have been remarkable. This small island is the only natural habitat of some of the world’s rarest plant species. One was unknown to science previously, another was believed extinct, while a third has only one genetic individual in the wild. The number of bird species on the island has doubled. This book describes the geological, natural and human history of the island, the pest eradication program, and the extraordinary environmental response. It was very favourably reviewed in the international journal Restoration Ecology in 2014. Prices are for PDF file version. Paperback version also available.

Book excerpt: This is a major conservation success story about possibly Australia¿s most spectacular rehabilitaion program. It is a landmark ecological case study.Phillip Island is near Norfolk Island, halfway between Sydney and Fiji. Before feral animals were released on Phillip Island, the island retained its natural sub-tropical vegetation and native fauna. The first disastrous action was release of pigs on the island in 1793. The settlers also introduced goats and rabbits to Phillip Island by 1830. By around 1860 the island had almost no vegetation apart from a few remnant trees. By about 1900 only rabbits remained, preventing the growth of vegetation and allowing unrestricted erosion to continue. Rabbit eradication efforts between 1979 and 1986 succeeded, allowing the environment to rebound spectacularly. Although only about 200 hectares the island is extremely rugged with cliffs 200 metres high, necessitating unusual methods to reach inaccessible areas ¿ swimming, rock climbing, even archery. This book describes the island¿s history and natural history, explaining how geological and geomorphological events helped shape the ecosystem. With a diversity of breeding seabirds and some of the world¿s rarest plants, Phillip Island is a real natural treasure. Numerous photographs and maps show the wildlife and the spectacular revegetation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geared up with two tents, six panniers, two tandem bicycles and one stuffed pink pig, Paula and Lorenz Eber set off from Seattle, Washington to cycle the world with their two daughters, eleven-year old Yvonne, and her thirteen year old sister, Anya. Their dream: to pedal in a complete circle around the world using a carbon free, environmentally friendly way to travel. Their goal: to raise awareness of asthma – a disease that Paula has suffered from her entire life – and the world’s desperate need for clean air. Breathtaking is the exciting and inspiring true story of their adventures. Readers follow the Ebers across Europe, Asia, the South Pacific and North America as they raise their daughters around the globe. School is conducted outdoors on mountaintops. The responsibilities of parenting have been expanded to include hunting for an English copy of the latest Harry Potter book. And family togetherness takes on a new meaning as the Ebers must work together to survive a 100-degree heat wave in Italy, drug smugglers in Russia, a broken foot in New Zealand and a tornado in the U.S. Yet, as the family pedals farther and farther away from home, they realize that the greatest challenge they face is the journey that they must undergo within themselves. The Ebers returned home twenty-four countries and 14,931 km (9,332 miles) later – raising $65,000 for the non-profit organization, World Bike for Breath. They spoke about clean air and asthma to more than 150 newspapers, magazines, and TV stations, including Time for Kids, NPR, and PBS’s Roadtrip Nation. They are the only family on record to complete a full circumnavigation of the world by bicycle.

Book excerpt: 'The unmistakable voice of Moto GP' - Valentino Rossi As 'The Voice' of motorcycle racing for forty years, commentator Nick Harris became the biggest star not on two wheels in the paddock, and this is his mostly eye-witness, white-knuckle account of MotoGP's scorching seventy-year history. The story starts on the Isle of Man in 1949, when Geoff Duke, with his slicked-back hair and one-piece black leathers, became the nation's hero, defying the odds and winning the most dangerous race in the world on a British-built Norton. Just over a decade later at Mallory Park, another British champion and one of the greatest riders of all time Mike Hailwood screamed past a young Nick Harris on his 250cc Honda, and a life-long passion was born. Harris has been at the centre of the sport for decades, getting to know the riders as individuals, seeings feuds unfold, champions made, careers and sometimes lives ended. We'll see the biggest podium stars up close, from Barry Sheene and Kenny Roberts to Valentino Rossi, and we'll meet the mechanics behind them, the manufacturers who poured millions into the teams, and the organisers who, in the early days, ruthlessly compromised rider safety for profits. The drama has often been as tense off the track as on it. This is the book the motorcycling world has been waiting for.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia is the custodian of a diverse range of continental and oceanic islands. From Heard and Macquarie in the sub-Antarctic, to temperate Lord Howe and Norfolk, to the tropical Cocos (Keeling) Islands and the islands of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia’s islands contain some of the nation’s most iconic fauna, flora and ecosystems. They are a refuge for over 35% of Australia’s threatened species and for many others declining on mainland Australia. They also have significant cultural value, especially for Indigenous communities, and economic value as centres for tourism. Australian Island Arks presents a compelling case for restoring and managing islands to conserve our natural heritage. With contributions from island practitioners, researchers and policy-makers, it reviews current island management practices and discusses the need and options for future conservation work. Chapters focus on the management of invasive species, threatened species recovery, conservation planning, Indigenous cultural values and partnerships, tourism enterprises, visitor management, and policy and legislature. Case studies show how island restoration and conservation approaches are working in Australia and what the emerging themes are for the future. Australian Island Arks will help island communities, managers, visitors and decision-makers to understand the current status of Australia’s islands, their management challenges, and the opportunities that exist to make best use of these iconic landscapes.

Book excerpt: Phillip Island is Australia's home of motorsport. These are the untold stories of a century of racing. There is no other motor-racing circuit in the world with the history of Phillip Island. Since 1928 it has hosted the Australian Grand Prix, the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, the World Superbike Championship, the Armstrong 500 and many other races. Today, the Australian MotoGP attracts tens of thousands to the island every year. It is revered as the world's best MotoGP track and is the second-fastest in the world by just 0.1 km/h. Australia's champions of motorcycle racing are born there. As a motor-racing journalist for more than 45 years, John Smailes has had extraordinary access to Phillip Island and to the leading names who have competed there. When Wayne Gardner, Mick Doohan and Casey Stoner won their championships, John was there. He has delved into the island's rich history, from the winner of the first Australian Grand Prix, Gallipoli hero Captain Arthur Waite, to Australia's F1 world champions Sir Jack Brabham and Alan Jones, and the astonishing political and business dealings over the years. In Phillip Island, John Smailes delivers the definitive account of the circuit, featuring interviews with champions including Valentino Rossi and many others who made it the legend it is today. It's the gripping and untold story of an island unlike any other. 'Phillip Island is my legacy to Australian motorsport. I'm proud to have been part of its development. This book is a must-read.' Wayne Michael Gardner AM 'Still in its original shape, a super circuit for Supercars, world class.' Dick Johnson AM

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia’s nature is exceptional, wonderful and important. But much has been lost, and the ongoing existence of many species now hangs by a thread. Against a relentless tide of threats to our biodiversity, many Australians, and government and non-government agencies, have devoted themselves to the challenge of conserving and recovering plant and animal species that now need our help to survive. This dedication has been rewarded with some outstanding and inspiring successes: of extinctions averted, of populations increasing, of communities actively involved in recovery efforts. Recovering Australian Threatened Species showcases successful conservation stories and identifies approaches and implementation methods that have been most effective in recovering threatened species. These diverse accounts – dealing with threatened plants, invertebrates, fish, reptiles, birds and mammals – show that the conservation of threatened species is achievable: that it can be done and should be done. They collectively serve to inform, guide and inspire other conservation efforts. This is a book of hope and inspiration. It shows that with dedication, knowledge and support, we can retain and restore our marvellous natural heritage, and gift to our descendants a world that is as diverse, healthy and beautiful as that which we have inherited.
